The year 2007 was full of many changes in Guam’s visitor industry. Local and off-island interests began a series of investments and acquisitions changing the ownership and the physical attributes of hotel properties along both Tumon Bay and Hagatna Bay. By all accounts, this renewed interest in investing in Guam’s number one industry will continue well into 2008! As the year went by, businesses were constantly tweaking their marketing plans to keep pace with market conditions impacted by rising fuel costs, fluctuations in the exchange rates, and the surge in competition by both Japanese and Korean domestic destinations. It is expected that these condi- tions will not change for the first three quarters of 2008. For the first time in many years, the Guam Visitors Bureau recognized the importance in developing a strategic vision to guide the industry’s growth.

  • 3. the Travels of a Jasmine Flower: a Chinese Folk Song, Its Prehistory, and Tan Dun's Symphony 1997
194 Musical Composition in the Context of Globalization Perspectives Aside from the aspects summarized here, it is not easy to reconstruct Fraenkel’s time in Shang- hai in great detail. In many respects, we still have to rely on assumptions, for example, when trying to reconstruct the exact circumstances of his release from Sachsenhausen and his trip to Shanghai, but, most importantly, also his artistic and cultural impact during the exile years: how did Fraenkel make contacts in Shanghai? How did he find a connection to the city’s music scene so quickly, gaining a comparatively privileged position in the impoverished immigrant community, in contrast to Julius Schloß or Karl Steiner, who had to make ends meet in bars as accordion and piano players?137 Further studies of his estate, a more comprehensive consideration of the oral history, which was only cursorily included here, and, last but not least, more precise analyses of his musical works could certainly help to answer these and other questions that arise. For the time being, it remains remarkable how sensitively Fraenkel reacted to the state of music in China and how this was partly reflected in his writings and works. From the perspective of Chinese music historiography, Fraenkel is a small but crucial build- ing block. Without him, the early reception of musical modernism in China would probably not have taken place at all, and the sensational “second musical modernity” in China during the 1980s and 1990s (→ III.5) would not have found any point of reference in its own past. Fraenkel’s work as a pedagogue, conductor, musician, and composer deserves to be further examined in China as well as in the West.

Foreword 2-3 Performance Pledges 4 Vision, Mission & Values 5 Leisure Services 6-28 Cultural Services 29-82 Administration 83-96 Feedback Channels 97 Appendices 98-121 1 Foreword The year 2015-16 was another fruitful one for the LCSD in its efforts to improve the quality of life of Hong Kong and enhance the physical and cultural well-being of people. Providing well-maintained and up-to-date facilities that meet the needs of our community remains our top priority. The Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre and Public Library was one of the brand-new facilities that came into service during the year. We completed turf reconstruction at the Hong Kong Stadium, and carried out a major renovation of the Hong Kong Space Museum. We also pressed ahead with the upgrading and faceli of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, designed not only to increase the museum's exhibition space but also to enhance its visibility, accessibility, customer orientation and branding. Meanwhile, we were excited to begin construction of the new and much anticipated East Kowloon Cultural Centre. We continued to stage many colourful arts and cultural events during the year. One of the highlights was the first Muse Fest in the summer of 2015, which offered a rich celebration of all 14 museums under the auspices of the LCSD through a wide array of fun-filled activities and enriching experiences for the community. As part of the Appreciate Hong Kong campaign, free admission to museums was offered in the month of January 2016, resulting in an increase of over 40% in the number of visitors when compared with that in January 2015.

2015 Business China Young Achiever Award Recipient Tanya Chua 蔡健雅 Age: 40 Singer Songwriter, Tangy Music International Group Contributions to Singapore-China Relations Her greatest contribution to the Singapore-China relations is through her status and profile in the Chinese pop music scene. Along with JJ Lin and Stephanie Sun, Tanya is one of Singapore’s most well-known Mandopop exports. In 2008, she was selected by Singapore Tourism Board to be its ambassador to China for two years due to her popularity overseas. At the Shanghai World Expo 2010, Tanya along with fellow Singaporean singers JJ Lin, Stefanie Sun and Ah Du performed a song titled “Every Touching Moment”, helping to raise Singapore's profile in the global event held in China. Took on the role of producer for China’s Mandopop queen Na Ying (那英)’s new album entitled “So What” in 2010. This was the first time Tanya had produced an entire album for another singer. This new role also helped to raise her profile in China as a multi-talented Singaporean musician. In 2014, she was appointed as one of the 4 judges-mentors on China’s CCTV reality singing competition Song of China (中国好歌曲), where contestants perform their original compositions. Tanya is the sole Singaporean representative on the panel. The show was a hit in China, thus helping to raise the profile of Singaporeans in the Chinese entertainment scene. She was re- appointed for the 2015 season. In 2014, she spearheaded Project WAO (Women as One). She teamed up with fellow female Mandopop powerhouses A-Mei from Taiwan, Sandy Lam from Hong Kong and Na Ying (那英) from China to record her self-composed song “We are One”.
