VOLUME 64, NUMBER 51 CASSCITY, MICHIGAN-THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 1971 Fifteen Cents SIXTEEN PAGES Elkland endorses new fire hall Roads, salaries key topics at area annual town meetings.

Saturday was annual meet- ing time as area townships re- ported the year's business to interested residents and out- lined proposed expenditures and discussed perennial topics: roads and salaries. An estimated 30 voters at- tending the Elkland township annual meeting gave the green light to plans for a new fire hall-township meeting room and raised salaries 10 per cent for the clerk, treasurer and supervisor, Saturday at the Cul- tural Center. The increases will boost sal- aries from $3,500 to $3,850 for Supervisor Maynard Mc- Conkey; from $2,500 to $2,750 for Clerk Ferris Ware and Treasurer Art Randall. In addition, the employees receive fringe benefits, it was disclosed at the meeting. Each is paid $25 a month for office rent in their homes and Mc- Conkey was paid $500 for mile- age travelled within the county, as well as extra mileage for trips out of the county. Voters stopped the flat $500 payment and authorized all mileage at 10? per mile. The other big item the agenda was the fire hall prop- osition. John Zinnecker asked MAYNARD McCONKEY (standing) outlines some of the problems facing Elkland township at how a $35,000 project could Saturday's annual meeting. be up to a possible $100,000.
