A big thank you! It’s almost the end of my first month at Copthorne Prep, and I have had a wonderful welcome from all the teachers, parents and most importantly the children. What I have learnt in my first few weeks is that we have a wonderful, positive, can-do approach in our school. The children have told me that Copthorne Prep is ‘inspiring, encouraging, nurturing, caring, busy, family, community, welcoming, fun and joyous’ and I have to say that I agree with all of these. How lucky we are to come to such a positive school!

At Francis Court the children helped to decorate pictures of cakes for the residents’ cake sale and also carefully coloured in pictures to enter into Copthorne Church’s Flower and Produce show this weekend.

Reception This week has been a busy week in Reception. We continued our topic of Jungles and looked at things that 'flap and fly'. The teachers were amazed at the children's knowledge of birds and learned a fact or two themselves! The children made fantastic clay birds in art! The ambition, determination and craftsmanship of the children was astounding. They spent time thinking about and mixing colours to achieve the desired effect and some spent ages getting it 'just right'! We had parrots, eagles, flamingos, owls and many more, so do keep an eye out for them. Our role as educators is to help children to develop their technical, physical, tactical and social skills. Winning must always be secondary to taking part and being a good sport despite what some parents think! Enjoy watching your children play but please observe the “Code of Conduct” for spectators and parents at all times. • Remember that children play for FUN • Applaud effort and good play as well as success • Always respect the match officials’ decisions • Remain outside the field of play • Let the coach do their job and do not confuse the players by telling them what to do • Encourage the players to respect the opposition, referee and match officials • Avoid criticising a player for making a mistake – mistakes are part of learning • Never engage in, or tolerate, offensive, insulting, or abusive language or behaviour Wind Day, The children had a brilliant time at a Wind Day at Lancing College on Thursday. They learnt four pieces from scratch to perform to parents in the afternoon. Emily said:’ I liked it when we performed together at the end of the day!’

Year 4 visit London Zoo Year 4 visited London Zoo on Thursday 27th September as part of their Science topic, teeth and digestion. The sun was shining and every- one had a great time, including lions and tigers who were doing a spot of sunbathing and the penguins who were water flying! Here is what some of the Year 4's thought of the afternoon; We went to London Zoo and it was great! I saw loads of animals like tigers, lions, camels and lots more. My favourite animal was the tiger! After we saw the animals we learnt about animal skeletons and teeth it was fun! I liked London Zoo and I want to go back! Noah I enjoyed the workshop because it was very interesting. We looked at big and small bones and skulls and tried to work out what animal it was. We weighed them and measured them and looked at their teeth. Franklin My favourite animal was the warthog because it had huge horns. We went to the Education Centre where we saw teeth. My favourite tooth was a canine and my favourite skull we looked at was a crocodile. Rohan My favourite part was seeing the baby monkeys eat! We learnt that the Zoo saved lots of animals including tigers because they were almost extinct but they found a girl and boy and soon enough they had cubs. Now they have a chance of not being extinct! Some people said that the colossal gorilla looked like a rugby player and it did. That was funny! Maryam

The DISC Model of Human Behaviour: The D Child Year 7 students are currently getting back their Profile Reports. What is your child’s ‘lead’ style? (we all tend to be a ‘blend’ of DIS & C, but for ease, let’s just focus on their most obvious traits). So, your child might be a D? – Dominant, Demanding, Direct, Determined, Decisive, Doer, Dynamic...... do they want to be in charge? Are they competitive and want to win? Do they love a challenge? Do they (unintentionally) intimidate others? Are they impatient? Are they quick, confident and productive? Do they dislike being told what to do? Tip for managing a D child.... Your parenting style will probably be determined by your personality style, but here are a few general tips...... Establish that you are in control....as early as possible. If you are not an authority figure and you don’t establish the ‘bottom line’ they will not respect you. Allow them to make their own choices. You can decide the boundaries, but give them a choice! For example: “do you want to wear the green shirt or blue?” “You can go to bed any time you like, so long as it is before 8.30pm – you choose....can you do that?” Give them opportunities to expend and focus their energy. Physical activity/clubs, learn an instrument, games, hands-on tasks give them opportunities to stretch and achieve.
