Strong Blonde D’Aquitaine heifers (24m) from Ian Lethbridge, East Allington fetched £805 with neat later born types of the same breed seeing £865 for Martin Curtis again and a nicely shaped British Blue heifer (only 13m) took home £790 for Matt & Vicky smith of Thelbridge. Just a few Organic stores on offer with young (13m) Aberdeen Angus heifers from Sam Walker, to £630.

2177 BREEDING EWES

The first breeding ewe sale of the season kicked off as expected to a cautious yet not calamitous trade. Plenty of interest in pretty much all classes of sheep resulting in all but 9 pens finding new homes. Just under 200 older ewes kicked the sale off to a good trade, especially for pure Dorset’s with a flock dispersal topping the sale at £126, £118, £114 & £111 for SA Vickery & Partners of Bridport. Dorset Mules 4T’s made £112 for Robert Partridge of Teignmouth and more pure Dorset ewes at £114 for Joe Rowe of Somerton and £108 & £103 for Ray Tucker of Bridford. Suffolk cross 6T-FM ewes sold to £104 & £98 for Keith & Christine Morish of Cheriton Bishop. Amongst the shearlings pure Charollais shearlings topped at £160 for Roy Endacott of Spreyton and pure Dorset shearlings took the next top prices at £150, £149 & £148 (x2) for MJ & DM Lake of . More Dorset’s at £134 for Winston Thorne of Umberleigh, £130 (x3) & £122 (x4) for Brian Westcott of Exford and £118 for David & Adrian Cole of . A great show of Dorset Mules, probably met the hardest trade of the day with the second prize pen taking top price at £136 for Richard Brooks of Bridport who then went on to sell the next 10 pens at £130. Brian & Ian Johnson of Bridport had third prize in the show and sold all five of their pens at £132 whilst first prize was awarded to John Simons of Chard who received £128 & £126 for his best. Berrichon x Dorset’s to £130 (x2) for David & Adrian Cole and the majority of Dorset Mules traded from £110 to £126 to average £121 down just £4 on the year. A much larger and generally decent quality entry of Suffolk cross shearlings sold away well with plenty of customers for them this early in the season. A Stand out run of Suffolk cross Cheviot Mules sold to £137, £132 (x2), £131 & £130 (x2) for Rob Holmes of Dunchideock, two nice pens at £136 for Suffolk cross Mules from Roger Rottenbury of Black Dog, more of the same at £133 (x2) for John Simons and £132 (x2) for Robert Chanin of Thorverton. Plenty then selling from £118 to £130 and keenly bid for resulting in an average of £123, back £15 on the year but with twice as many sold. A big number of Mules at this early fixture met with a decent level of interest, especially for the lower end, improving sorts. Ross & Emma Sizmur of sold two smart pens at £124 as well as others at £120 & £117 whilst Peter Parker from Lincolnshire saw the best of his make £115 (x2) & £110. Texel Mule shearlings peaked at £126 for four pens from Brian Webber of Cullompton who had others at £120 and £126 also for smart looking Berrichon x Texel Mules from Roger Rottenbury who had more of the same at £125 and straight Texel Mules at £124.

100 EWES & 171 LAMBS (271 LIVES)

A sizable entry of 100 ewes with 171 lambs sold well and to £188 for 8 Dorset ewes with 15 lambs (£65.39/life) from John & Diane Vooght of Dunsford who also had 7 flock aged Mules with 12 Suffolk sired lambs at £173 (£63.74/life). Straight doubles from Mervyn Brice of sold to £170 & £152 as well as selling a pen of 5 triplets at £178. Other doubles and mixed pens between £128 and £148 and best of the singles reached £142 (£71/life) for Joe Rowe and £128 (£64/life) for Keith & Christine Morish of Cheriton Bishop.

***ALL COUPLE VENDORS MUST SUPPLY STRAW FOR THE PENS CONTAINING LAMBS***

95 STOCK RAMS

Rams seemed a stickier trade with more forward and just over 60% finding new homes. Top money went to the first rams through the ring whilst next top price went to the last consignment through, proving where you are in the catalogue has little effect on price providing you bring something good. The first two rams in were Suffolk shearlings from Mike Waycott of Ashburton and sold well ahead of expectations at 480gns apiece as next best price went to the powerful Charollais from Nigel Dennis of Ipplepen that saw his best achieve 450gns & 410gns. Other Suffolks at 400gns (x2) for Steve Rachel Lang of Plympton with 4T’s who also had a Charollais of the same age at 340gns. Mark Hayman & Abi Dart of Bradninch sold a Charollais shearling at 360gns as well as top priced Dorset shearlings at 350gns (x2) whilst Richard & Robert Hole of Sherborne sold a striking Dorset ram lamb at 350gns. More Charollais shearlings at 340gns for the Barker family of Wellington and the same money was given for a pair of Blue Texel shearlings from Margaret Heard of Taunton. Richard Berry sold his best crossbred 4T ram to 320gns and Ben & Amelia Watts of Ashburton parted with their best three Charollais ram lambs for 300gns apiece.

‘Flat out like a lizard drinking’ a cracking saying picked up from a colleague in Northamptonshire that springs to mind for the month of May. All aspects of work have been busy, with the market operating to full capacity on a number of occasions both on Mondays and a Friday, a terrific sight to see. Whilst the professional team have been busy completing and submitting the ever important Basic Payment Scheme applications and a variety ofother professional matters.

The weather as always remains a continued topic of conversation when out on farm or talking to market clients, with only a few stating the need for rain is not required. Throughout May various areas received localised heavy showers which gave a life line to many spring crops but also greatly helped the prospect of winter growing varieties and the grass ground. Generally first cut silage has reported reasonably well, with winter cropsin particularly the barley looking strong. Let’s hope for a bit of low pressure on the charts providing a good soaking throughout the early part of June which will just help on grass yields consequently giving confidence in the beef ring.

Professionally the Kivells team have been embraced with the Basic Payment Scheme submitting a staggering total across the South West. With regards to the application process, the online system now works relatively well, with the transfer of entitlements and land parcels being actioned on the click of a button, rather than the mundane process of RLE1 forms and the back logged time it takes to activate the required land changes.

Moving forward it is important to state that Basic Payment Scheme matters don’t stop after the 15th May. Having completed and submitted the required applications, attention then turns to queries from previous year claims. Often in the form of loss of entitlements, payment queries or financial penalties that have been applied for no apparent reason. An occurrence that I am often involved in relates to the Michampton case surrounding moorland entitlements and additional payments. If you have any queries on the BPS payments or Michampton case matters surrounding additional moorland payments please get in touch, we can help!

Summer is often the time of year where farms and land are launched onto the market for sale. Although the land market appears quieter across all regions with concerns over ongoing political engagements, we have a few farms and small holdings in the pipeline that should be launched within the year. Putting your property to the open market isn’t the only method in selling. To date there have been a number of occasions whereby I have been involved with sellers looking to deal privately, selling to your neighbour on a price that both parties are content with. If you’re looking to buy or you’re looking to sell, please contact us. Our team across the South West will be delighted to come and meet with you.

With regards to additional payments our attention now swings to the Countryside Stewardship. The deadline for receiving the application packs has now passed with all submissions needing to be completed by the 31st July. Uptake and expressed interest within has increased this year with clients taking the opportunity to receive additional income and improve farm infrastructure through the use of grants. My thoughts remain unmoved on the matter, the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship is an additional payment that will work for some farm steads but not for those who are reasonably intensive and unwilling to alter current farming practices. If you have applied for an application pack and require advice on the best options going forward please contact your nearest office. The Mid-Tier CCS first started in 2015 and our team have now completed a large proportion of application consequently finding out which options best suit individual farms.

Throughout the Spring I was involved with a number of electricity pole and wire renewals within the Kingsbridge area. The company entering the land to renew the various apparatus unfortunately entered at a point of harsh weather damaging crops and creating land rutting and compaction. It is imperative that you as the farmer are compensated fairly for the damages caused. It is often the case the company entering your land require entry for very little in return, however next time you require connecting to the electrical apparatus be sure to expect a hefty bill. As agents, our fees are covered by the companies entering the land and we ensure a fair payment is made in relation to crop loss, business disruption and the essential reinstatement.

Standing straw will be the next topic of conversation with our annual sale set for the end of June. This time last year drought conditions started to set in and stocks of straw from the previous winter had been used meaning for a strong trade. Going forward for this year although we are perhaps not expecting such a strong trade, stocks throughout the country have been used and from speaking to colleagues in the Midlands and East Anglia cereal crops are starting to stain under the current weather conditions ultimately having an effect on yield. On June 28th it appears we will be putting to auction 1500 acres plus of Winter Wheat, Barley and Oats in and around Exeter and the surrounding districts. Catalogues for the sale will be available shortly, if you require one on the kitchen table please get in touch.
