This event is being organized alongsidethe 6th Conference on Human Development in Asia (COHDA 2020). COSTA 2020 will coincide with the cherry blossom viewing period around Osaka. The good weather and blooming cherry blossoms is a time ‘hanami’ celebrations around the city. Hanami, which means cherry blossom viewing, is an important ritual in Japanese culture dating back hundreds of years. It is customary for people to gather in parks and spread tarps beneath the cherry trees, admiring the splendor of the blossoms, while eating, drinking and enjoying time with family and friends. The most popular spots for hanami get crowded with food and drink stalls, and sometimes there are festivals and events of all kinds. Plus, hanami in Osaka can be enjoyed not only during daytime, but also at night, when the cherry trees are lit up and offer a completely different scenery. This is a small, international, peer-reviewed conference with a limited number of oral and poster presentation time slots. We encourage all interested participants to submit presentations as early as possible. Please note that submissions and registration will close when the event has reached its capacity. -

During the season overflowing with the charm of Japan when cherry-blossoms bloom, there will be many limited time offers on sweets made with cherry-blossom in the areas along the Tobu Railway, spanning across 4 Tokyo prefectures. In addition, Tobu Railways have newly set-up an official Instagram account (Account Name: tobu_tokyo_gourmet), sharing pictures of Japanese cuisine and introducing gourmet information from spots along the Tobu Railway lines to foreign tourists visiting Japan. In Japan, the culture known as "Hanami" exists. "Hanami" is a time in which family and friends gather together to celebrate the coming of spring, eating dumplings and box lunches outside while watching the blooming cherry-blossoms. Please take this opportunity to visit Japan in the spring to see the cherry-blossoms, and enjoy a part of Japanese culture unique to the season. -

Atkins Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music ii ©Copyright 2017 Michiko Urita iii University of Washington Abstract In Silent Homage to Amaterasu: Kagura Secret Songs at Ise Jingū and the Imperial Palace Shrine in Modern and Pre-modern Japan Michiko Urita Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Patricia Shehan Campbell Music This dissertation explores the essence and resilience of the most sacred and secret ritual music of the Japanese imperial court—kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku—by examining ways in which these two songs have survived since their formation in the twelfth century. Kagura taikyoku and kagura hikyoku together are the jewel of Shinto ceremonial vocal music of gagaku, the imperial court music and dances. Kagura secret songs are the emperor’s foremost prayer offering to the imperial ancestral deity, Amaterasu, and other Shinto deities for the well-being of the people and Japan. I aim to provide an understanding of reasons for the continued and uninterrupted performance of kagura secret songs, despite two major crises within Japan’s history. While foreign origin style of gagaku was interrupted during the Warring States period (1467-1615), the performance and transmission of kagura secret songs were protected and sustained. In the face of the second crisis during the Meiji period (1868-1912), which was marked by a threat of foreign invasion and the re-organization of governance, most secret repertoire of gagaku lost their secrecy or were threatened by changes to their traditional system of transmissions, but kagura secret songs survived and were sustained without losing their iv secrecy, sacredness, and silent performance. -

LUND UNIVERSITY • CENTRE FOR EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN STUDIES A symbol becomes the culture: Reinventing Japanese cherry blossoms Author: Hanyan Ye Supervisor: Annika Pissin Master’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2015 ABSTRACT A major concern of this thesis was the changing meanings of cherry blossoms in Japanese history, and the images of Japan created through the flower. With a peculiar emphasis on today’s international context, when cherry blossoms have become a unique culture of Japan, this research inquired into the process of symbol-making. The Zenith concept of nyoze and poststructural discussions on language-power relations functioned as critical theoretical tools in revealing the articulation of knowledge within meanings related to the symbol, which empowered certain “truths” at different historical stages. In addition, the thesis illustrated that aestheticization and commodification were the two prominent forces in reinventing meanings, making them appear natural or commonsensical. Meanwhile, supported by interview findings, the thesis investigated into the uniqueness and authenticity of cherry blossoms in Japan, and contended that they !reinforced the asserted cultural homogeneity of the country. The Cherry Blossoms Blooming Friendship Between Japan and the United States The cherry trees along the banks of the Potomac, blooming every year in late March and early April, are emblematic of spring in Washington DC. The roughly 4,000 trees are a treasure enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The National Cherry Blossom Festival, which dates back to 1927, now attracts over 1.5 million people every year. It is a huge social occasion that brings everyone together, and the root of this “cherry blossom diplomacy” was one Japanese man: Jokichi Takamine. Takamine was a biologist, best known for discovering the enzyme takadiastase and the hormone adrenalin. At the age of thirty-six he emigrated to the United States, and until his death at the age of sixty-eight he continued his research in the United States. Because of his many accomplishments, he is sometimes called the “father of modern biotechnology.” Cherry trees were first brought to Washington DC over 100 years ago. In 1909, First Lady Helen Taft had the idea of planting cherry trees along the banks of the Potomac, which Takamine enthusiastically supported. He made an appeal to the mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki, to bring beautiful cherry trees, the symbol of Japan, to the United States. In the following year, with the cooperation of the city of Tokyo and funding from Takamine’s own pocket, approximately 2,000 cherry trees were presented to Washington DC. Unfortunately, however, just before planting, a quarantine inspection revealed that the trees were infested and they were all incinerated. But Takamine did not give up; two years later, in 1912, another 6,000 trees were procured in Japan and arrived safely in the United States; half of those were delivered in Washington DC. -

Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1993 20/2-3 The Myth of the Goddess of the Undersea World and the Tale of Empress Jingu’s Subjugation of Silla Akima Toshio In prewar Japan, the mythical tale of Empress Jingii’s 神功皇后 conquest of the Korean kingdoms comprised an important part of elementary school history education, and was utilized to justify Japan5s coloniza tion of Korea. After the war the same story came to be interpreted by some Japanese historians—most prominently Egami Namio— as proof or the exact opposite, namely, as evidence of a conquest of Japan by a people of nomadic origin who came from Korea. This theory, known as the horse-rider theory, has found more than a few enthusiastic sup porters amone Korean historians and the Japanese reading public, as well as some Western scholars. There are also several Japanese spe cialists in Japanese history and Japan-Korea relations who have been influenced by the theory, although most have not accepted the idea (Egami himself started as a specialist in the history of northeast Asia).1 * The first draft of this essay was written during my fellowship with the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, and was read in a seminar organized by the institu tion on 31 January 199丄. 1 am indebted to all researchers at the center who participated in the seminar for their many valuable suggestions. CONCORDIA DISCORS vs DISCORDIA CONCORS Representations of the World Axis in the Japanese and the Romanian Culture Renata Maria RUSU Japan Foundation Fellow 2009 – 2010 Handa City, Japan Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to briefly present some of the forms the world axis takes in Japanese and Romanian cultures through the ages, namely, to show how a mythological concept – the axis mundi – has outlived its mythological existence and has survived up to modern days. We do not intend to concentrate on similarities or differences, but simply present some of the many culture-specific representations of this universal mythological concept: world axis representations in modern Japanese festivals (of which we have chosen three, to represent “pillar torches”: “the Sakaki sacred tree”, “the sacred mountain”, and “the sacred pillar”) and some world axis representations in Romanian culture, such as the fir tree, symbols related to dendrolatry, wooden crosses placed at crossroads, the ritual of climbing mountains, etc. Keywords: axis mundi, myth, representation, culture 0. Introduction The concept of axis mundi is one of the mythological concepts that can be found in virtually all cultures in the world. It has many representations which depend on culture, such as the tree, the mountain, the pillar, the tower, the obelisk, the cross, the liana, the stars, the nail, the bridge, the stair, etc. What is also striking about this concept is that it managed to outlive its mythological representations and survive up to modern days – a very powerful metaphor that transcends time. In this paper, we shall take a brief look at some of the forms the world axis takes in Japanese and Romanian cultures through the ages.
