Matthew 13:10-13 10 Then the disciples came and asked him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secret of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 13 The reason I speak to them in parables is that ‘seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.’ -Warmup: Before we begin, let’s get warmed up with an exercise. This is a very recognizable snapshot of a story I’m sure we all know (I think I even have a puzzle of this one). Take a moment and with the one or two people next to you, first, introduce yourself, then brainstorm an alternate story to this background. Give people time to share if they want. - Review Schedule (begin to unpack bricks throughout whole session) - Alex: We have planned this as the first of 2 keynotes and what you will notice is I will probably ask a lot of questions, a lot of open-ended questions! It will probably seem ridiculous at first, but you are on a retreat, so we have alot of time built in for you to process things, to answer questions or maybe to ask some questions of your own. I encourage you to find out how you best wrestle with these questions. Writing it down? Thinking about it and meditating? Drawing? Singing? Talking with someone? We have workshops tomorrow put on by our different Passionate Spiritually groups that will give you the opportunity to practice or try something new -This exploration into why can be very surface level to answer the purpose of something, “why am I here, speaking to you all? Answer: to teach you all why we tell stories.” You can dig a little deeper and ask, “ Why did you come to this retreat instead of the 20 other things you could be doing right now? Why Parables? why does this matter?” -Inevitably, as Christians, when we keep asking the “why” question, because you can always ask it, again and again, god and faith start to trickle in. -I challenge you this weekend and as you reflect on this weekend, to explore how long it takes for that to happen, for faith to trickle in for you, in what context, is it different when talking about different things, with different people? And to circle back, why? Whenever I tell a story about my grandma, it happens fast. Invested. If you are like me, it can be harder to talk about faith with those you don’t share faith practices with. I have this voice in my head that says, “they don’t want to hear about the sermon I heard Sunday” or “why would my Jewish friend want to hear about how I found and came to Lord of Life” or even worse “why would my atheist or agnostic friend want to hear about the eventful first few hours of the hypothermia shelter.” Why? Maybe I don’t know why, but God knows why they need to hear it. Why? Maybe -Just like storytelling and faith, both are meant to be practiced. It doesn’t get easier, you get better at it. As Christians, what are our unique? Some people tell and process stories differently, it is important to first know what it is...but also to SHARE IT! -Telling a story is kind of like when you ask a question and you start with “I have this friend...” but we all know the friend is actually you. -What is interesting to me is that looking at why we tell stories, in general, there is an aspect of persuasion. An aspect of convincing of something. As we look at faith stories, there is some truth in that, right? But then maybe another question we should be asking is “why” we listen to faith stories. -With most things, even when I am talking to someone else, or telling a story, or even teaching something, I am the hardest person to convince in the room. So as you practice telling your faith stories, you may work through some things yourself. - Julia (Alex finishes unpacking the bricks) We are created to tell stories, because our God works in and through stories. When Jesus walked the earth, his ministry became real, and relatable through his stories. Parables specifically are one form of storytelling that Jesus engaged in. Our God is a God of Storytelling. Rachel Held Evans writes- “Jesus invites us into a story that is bigger than ourselves, bigger than our culture, bigger even than our imaginations and yet we get to tell that story with the scandalous particularity of our particular moment and place in time. We are storytelling creatures because we are fashioned in the image of a storytelling God. May we never neglect the gift of that. May we never lose our love for telling the tale.” So why parables specifically? Our grounding scripture for this weekend is from Matthew and highlights our rocky relationship with parables. Jesus uses them and we don’t understand them. Why do you think that is? Our faith is one without definitive answers. The reason it has been able to survive so long- is because it is vibrant and alive, constantly engaging us in conversation. That’s what this weekend is going to be about. How can we continue the dialogue with God? How can we take time to listen to the stories of those around us and begin to see sparks of God’s divine light in their eyes? How can we acknowledge the narratives that are about to burst from us, the stories that are begging to be told, how can we give life to the imago dei in our own reflection? We begin our exploration in worship Friday Night Worship L = Julia Boudrye Voice 1 = Mary Lou Bolas Voice 2 = David Lewis CENTERING SONG Come As You Are (Verse 1, Chorus) CALL TO WORSHIP L: Who are we? C: We are the church! L: Why are we here? C: To be disciples! L: What do we say? C: He is risen! L: What do we have to offer? C: Hope to the world! CENTERING SONG Come As You Are (Verse 2, Chorus) CONFESSION L: Our play is marked by merriment, but beneath that looms the Other: our worry; our sorrow; our shame, our guilt, our grief. Let us surrender all that to the One who loves us beyond measure, the One who heals us, the One who makes us whole. L: Lord God… C: We have failed. We have gloated. We have hated. We have ignored. We have raged. We have hoarded. We have judged. We have turned away. We are sorry. We are exhausted. We are done. Fix us, heal us, break-and-remake-us, hold us, comfort us, nurture us, revive us, resuscitate us, bring us back from death. We give you the last word, O God. Will it be ‘grace’? Will it be ‘free’? Will it be ‘love’? CENTERING SONG Come As You Are (Verse 3, Chorus) FORGIVENESS L: My friends, God is not done with us, not by a long shot. You are more beloved than you can ever know, and God is working in you and in the world beyond our wildest imagining. The beginning of all that is forgiveness. So, know that you are indeed forgiven, and be at peace. Amen. CENTERING SONG Come As You Are (Chorus to end) OPENING PRAYER L: We have come here this evening, each of us bringing that which is of God within us. Jesus said, "Where two or three come together in my name, I am there among them." Let us prayer together… C: Oh God, our father and our friend, sometimes you seem to play hide and seek with us, hiding from us in the desert times, yet calling us by name when we least expect it. Even though we are so lost in our concerns that we do not always hear your voice, please join us in our prayers again this night, filling our hearts with your love and life-giving hope. Amen. NARRATIVE 1 Voice 1: Out of the silence at the beginning of time, You spoke the word of life. Out of the world's primeval darkness, You flooded the universe with light. In the dark of this place, I choose to quiet myself, I wait and watch. In the stillness of my soul, And from its fathomless depths, The senses of my heart are awake to you.
