San Diego

Oceanside is the perfect home base. OUR MAYOR...WELCOME Welcome to the City of Oceanside, California. Oceanside is the largest city in San Diego's "North County".

Ideally situated halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, Oceanside is a classic California beach community with its warm sandy beaches, historic wooden pier and Cape Cod-style harbor village complete with unlimited water sports and recreation.

Oceanside's pristine, sandy beaches edged by beautiful palm trees stretch for three and a half miles — the longest and widest beaches in San Diego County. A premier surfing area, Oceanside hosts internationally recognized surfing competitions each year.

Over 4 million people visit the Oceanside beaches and harbor year round.

The Oceanside Pier is the only public pier between San Clemente in South Or- ange County to the north and San Diego to the south and is also the longest wooden pier on the West Coast.

Oceanside has two museums, intriguing historical sites and picturesque shops and restaurants. And Oceanside’s downtown is prac- tically situated on the beach.

We hope that you will use this manual to refer to the many shops, restaurants and activities here in Oceanside!

Sincerely,

JIM WOOD Mayor

Oceanside’s Green Flash You've just been Flashed! Oceanside wonders never cease.... Another day relaxing at the beach taking in a heavenly Oceanside sunset, and you notice a brilliant flash of color appear on the horizon, a radiant emerald green adorns the upper edge of the flaring sun, as quickly as it appeared it's gone. The Green Flash is a little known and seldom seen mysterious optical phenomena. It can be seen at just the right time of a sunrise or sunset. When the sun settles over the horizon, the rays of light are refracted through layers of the atmosphere onto the water. This creates a reflection of each color in the spectrum, the last being the vibrant green that’s radiated for just seconds before the sun descends or fully emerges.

Did you know... Oceanside Beaches are not only beautiful but they are the perfect climate to house a very important natural resource that is included in more than 300 products you find everyday in your home? What is this natural wonder? It’s Kelp!!! Oceanside beaches are densely populated by brown algae, more commonly known as Giant Kelp. These Giant Kelp plants are anchored by root-like structures called holdfasts. Air filled pockets aligning the kelp blades keep the growing plant floating toward the surface, to insure it receives all the nutrients and sunlight that it needs to flourish. The long flowing blades act as homes for some of your favorite sea creatures. Kelp is the natural habitat for hundreds of plankton and fish.

-16- GRUNION RUN

Grunion are a species of marine fi sh found only along the coast of southern California and northern Baja California. They are justifi ably famous for their unique spawning behavior. Grunion spawn completely out of the water and lay their eggs on many sandy beaches in California. Shortly after high tide, on specifi c nights, sections of these beaches sometimes are covered with thousands of grunion dancing about on the sand. The popularity of these grunion runs means that some nights there are more people lining the beaches than grunion in the run.

The grunion run in March, June, July, and August. (April and May are “observation only” months.) You must have a fi shing license to catch grunion (no license is required for those under 16 years of age). You can catch them only with your bare hands. You can’t dig holes in the sand to trap them. You are only supposed to keep what you plan to eat. For fi shing license info and a current grunion run schedule, visit http://www.beachcalifornia.com/grunion-run- annual-schedule.html.

-44- Oceanside has been the choice of world class skating events such as the Van’s Triple SKATEBOARDING Crown and the Xbox championships.

Skateboarding has been present in the City of Oceanside for many years. The Oceanside Skatepark system is unique and was formally established in December of 2001 with the opening of the Temporary Downtown Skatepark. The successful Downtown Skatepark has since closed but has made way for more Oceanside Skateparks. Since 2001 the Parks & Recreation Division has built five more neighborhood Skateparks at Martin Luther King Park, Melba Bishop Park, John Landes Park, Alex Rd. and Libby Lake Park expanding upon the original concept. Today, skaters of all ages can enjoy a variety of challenging Skatepark courses throughout the city with multiple styles such as “street” and “tranny”. The Martin Luther King Skate Park, Melba Bishop Skate Park and the Alex Road Skatepark were designed and built by the Seattle based company Grindline Skateparks, which was founded in 1990 by a multi-talented team of Skateboard Park Designers, Concrete Craftsmen, Construction Managers and Professional Skateboarders which are dedicated to producing the best skateparks on the planet. Grindline has designed and built skateparks all over the country and world. Oceanside is one of the few Southern Californian Cities to have not one, but three Grindline Skateparks. -46- SURFING

Oceanside is well known for waves and surf culture. Every year, thousands of people flock to Oceanside for the beach and the great weather. Oceanside boasts over 3.5 miles of sandy beaches and lots of sandbars, which make the surf here enjoyable from most any spot. The Oceanside Pier is the best place to surf in Oceanside. The Pier produces fun and shapely waves in the summer. Both sides of the pier are very popular, and on a good day can be quite crowded. While the pier is definitely the best place to surf in Oceanside, the north side jetties in the Harbor is definitely a close second. Most locals will agree. The most ideal time to surf is when the tide is medium to high. Oceanside is also home to the California Surf Museum. The museum actively collects, documents and preserves surfing -related artifacts and memorabilia through a series of rotating exhibits. www.surfmuseum.org or call (760) 721-6876.

-49- HIKING

El Camino Real Award Hike for Cub Scouts from San Luis Rey de Francia to Guajome is about 5.4 miles long and located near Oceanside, California. The purpose of the El Camino Real Award is to encourage Scouts and Scouters to learn about the history of the California Mission System and the way of life of our earlier settlers. One of the requirements for Cub Scouts and Cub Scout Leaders to earn this award is to hike 5 miles along the El Camino Real or a designated route known to have been used by the early Padres or a similar trail in the California backcountry. This route is proposed as a designated route that would have been used by the mission to travel between Mission San Luis Rey de Francia and Pala, one of its six historic ranches.

San Luis Rey River Trail is a Class I bicycle trail open to pedestrians as well. The trail is 7.2 miles, one way, from the Neptune access (west end) to the eastern-most point on the College Bridge. The trail follows the path of the San Luis Rey River. This relatively flat trail is safe for all age groups, is completely separate from motorized traffic, and is free of stop signs and traffic lights. Explore Calavera Lake Trail via Oceanside's Oak Riparian Park. Located in the northeast part of Carlsbad and bordering the City of Oceanside, Lake Calavera is an open space preserve that is popular with hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers. Lake Calavera Preserve was set aside to conserve natural lands for the protection of native plants and wildlife. Recreational use is welcomed but must be compatible with habitat and species protection. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail. Please pick up after your pet! Oak Riparian Park, located at 4625 Lake Boulevard connects to over 6.4 miles of trails via Carlsbad’s Calavera Trail System, providing access to the Lake Calavera Trails. Other access points can be located in the City of Carlsbad. -50- BIKING IN OCEANSIDE Biking is one of the most popular past times in Oceanside. Residents and visitors spend a great deal of their free time riding and walking the San Luis Rey and Coastal Rail Trail. Both trails offer a wonderful workout and an opportunity to take in some of the scenic beauty Oceanside has to offer. COASTAL RAIL TRAIL The Coastal Rail Trail is a 44 mile (71 km) long regional bicycle and pedestrian pathway/trail that extends from downtown Oceanside to San Diego. The Oceanside segment is the northernmost portion and begins at the western end of the east-west San Luis Rey Recreational Trail. It is 3 miles long and runs adjacent to the railroad right-of-way and along City streets. The portion near the railroad is a fenced Class I bike path with exclusive rights-of-way and minimum cross flows by motorists. The portion of the trail located on City streets is posted to designate a Class III pedestrian shared trail route. The Coastal Rail Trail will span the cities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach. This project will construct 17.6 miles of Class I, II and III bikeways within the NCTD rail corridor and adjacent City streets. The trail includes segments of 12' wide multi-use Class I paved paths, 5' wide Class II bike lanes and Class III bike routes within existing roadways.

California Fishing Licenses are not required while fishing from the pier. Because of the long length of the pier, there is a large variety of available fish species to catch. Typical surf-line species of fish are available close to shore, including: barred surf perch, corbina, croaker, stingrays, guitarfish, and sargo. From the mid-section to the end of the pier you can catch halibut, sand bass, sand sharks, and more pelagic species like mackerel, barracuda and even white sea bass or yellowtail.

The pier is probably known best for its productive halibut and sand bass fishing. Live bait works well, if anglers are able to either catch it or buy it at a tackle shop off the pier. Sand bass and halibut can be taken regularly though with artificial presentations; however, a busy pier can make it difficult to cast efficiently.
