Many would better than when she arrived! argue that universal women issues to a great degree

do not impact the African American women, our issues are different…there may be some truth to that statement. However, we should seize every opportunity to share our stories. Women are standing up for what we believe and fighting for the rights of

our sister friends. Sisters are coming together, supporting each other and having our say. Alpha Kappa Alpha women are leaders. We are front and center in the lives of families, friends and our communities. We are thinkers and act on what can be done to make this world a better place. As a Soror, the focus should be what can we do to make our

sorority and chapter better. This could mean reaching out to a Soror “Just Because” no special reason. A brief call or card will exemplify empathy and compassion. It sounds cliché, but the little things you Sisterly in Service, do creates the lasting memories. It is the power of our words and daily acts of kindness that will make the Soror Luevenia Holloway world a better place. Lambda Epsilon Omega let’s keep showing up! SOROR MORGAN BIRCH Sisterly Relations Chairman

Hello, my name is Soror Morgan Delia Birch and I am currently a Center Director for Premier Academy. Before accepting my new career endeavor at Premier Academy. I was the Center Operations Manager at Partnership for Community Action, Inc. I graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 2007 with my Bachelors of Arts Degree in Educational Studies.

I also obtained my Masters Degree in 2013 in Educational Leadership in Administration and my Ed.S. in 2015 in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University. I strive every day to provide a lasting education in each child that comes through my center. Being a part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has introduced me to a great opportunity that has taught me things about myself both in terms of my desire to be a positive influence in the lives of others and with my personal strengths as a leader and mentor. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., I work hard to uphold the reputation and exceed the standards that those before me have set.

Being a part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has truly impacted my life in the most wonderful way. It has shown me that I can do anything I put my mind to if I am persistent, patient, and passionate about it. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is filled with women who I call “Go Getters”: Women who will go above and beyond to prove a point and make a difference. Women who don’t just sit there and watch things happen, but who get up and make things happen. I am thankful that I bring a strong and positive benefit to our illustrious sorority.

“She walks in a room with her head held high, Acknowledgement of her presence is an awe-filled gaze, or admiring sigh. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman is regal and profound. She is the essence of feminism and these qualities abound.” -Ms. Morgan Birch

Risk Management Sorors, are you prepared to move in case of an emergency at chapter meeting? Do you know what to do in case of a fire? Where to go? The Risk Management Committee has a few tips to help keep you safe in the event of an emergency.

 Stay calm. Do not rush or panic.  Safely stop your activity/meeting.  Gather your personal belongings if it is safe to do so. Take prescription medications, keys, cell phone, I.D., purse, glasses, etc. with you if at all possible as it may be hours before you are allowed back into the building.  Use the nearest safe stairs and proceed to the nearest exit. Know if any sorors or visitors will require assis- tance in exiting the building and be prepared to provide whatever help necessary.  Proceed to the designated emergency evacuation assembly area (see below).  Wait for instructions from emergency responders or safety coordinator.  Do not re-enter the building or meeting area until you have been instructed to do so by emergency respond- ers. If seated on the right side of the room If seated on the left side of the room

The Risk Management Committee directed the 1st emergency evacuation drill at the May chapter meet- ing. It was very successful! All sorors evacuated the building under 3 minutes which was the optimal time. Stay tuned for further safety instructions.

Taking Care of Our Pearls

Dear Sorors, June is a month of important holidays: Juneteenth, Father’s Day, the Longest Day and, of course, Lambda Epsilon Omega’s Chapter Anniversary. For more excitement? June’s flower symbol is the rose; its gemstone is the pearl. Many things to celebrate or enjoy this month! We can celebrate the emancipation of our people. Or, we can celebrate our fathers, husbands, sons, uncles … all the men who enhance our lives. (As a single mother, I celebrated Father’s Day too.) Our Sorority celebrates the Longest Day by recognizing our caregivers. Our Chapter Anniversary is a way to remind us of our sisterhood and the remarkable women with whom we share the journey. With all of this … the most important is to celebrate YOU. We are all beautiful and have many talents. Share your talents, compliment yourself, and bask in your glory. You are amazing! If you have good news to share, please do so! Births, engagements, weddings, retirements, graduations, accomplishments and anniversaries, we want to celebrate with you! And, if you are experiencing an illness or injury; have had a death occur in your family, or are in need of sisterly support, we want to help. Please send a message to our Basileus ([email protected]) or me ([email protected]) to let us know. Happy Birthday to all Sorors celebrating in June and July. We hope that each of you enjoy your special day! Have a restful summer.

Sisterly,

Soror Lisa Mullins Hodegos
