But, the truth is, both airports are world-class facilities that share a passion for supporting their team, city and traveling fans.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 18, No. 2 (1996) BUBBA SMITH: ALL TOO REAL by Mike Gershman "When hearing tales of Bubba Smith, You wonder, is he man or myth?" -- Ogden Nash Quarterbacks who faced a charging Charles "Bubba" Smith generally found him -- at 6'8", 280 pounds -- all too real. A legend in East Lansing, Smith was a two-time All-America at Michigan State and an All-Pro before a freak accident hampered his effectiveness and shortened his playing career. He was born in Beaumont, Texas, and his father, coach Willie Ray Smith, bred three All-State Smiths -- Willie Ray, Jr., Tody, and Bubba. Willie Ray, Sr., made Charlton Pollard a perennial power in Texas school football; the school was 11-0 Bubba's senior year, and recruiters wore out the rugs in the Smith household until he decided on MSU. As a sophomore, he starred on a team that yielded just 76 points in eleven games. In 1965, MSU beat UCLA, 13-3, shut out Penn State, 23-0, and held Michigan to minus 51 yards rushing. Before the Ohio State game, Buckeye coach Woody Hayes warned that his team would run directly at Bubba; Smith stuffed the running attack, and MSU won, 32-7. The Spartans beat Notre Dame, 12-3, in South Bend to finish unbeaten but lost a Rose Bowl rematch to UCLA, 14-12. Despite the loss, Smith was called "the Deacon Jones of the college ranks" and was a consensus All-America selection. In 1966, Michigan State won its first nine games. The day before MSU was to play undefeated Notre Dame for the national championship, Smith roared by the Irish practice and was jailed on the eve of the Big Game.

    Meramec Hockey Club rents most items required for our Hockey Initiation Program (HIP). This equipment is available to rent while supplies last. We require a $150 deposit check made payable to “MHC” for the equipment that is rented (we do not accept cash). The rental deposit will be refunded at the conclusion of the HIP session upon return of all of the rental equipment and upon receiving the renter’s signature on the equipment authorization form. The renter will be charged for any equipment that is lost or for equipment damaged beyond normal wear and tear. Refunds on rental equipment that is returned after the equipment return date or in poor condition shall be at the discretion of the MHC Equipment Director &/or Treasurer. MHC Rental Equipment: 1. Helmet 2. Shoulder Pads/Chest Protector 3. Elbow Pads 4. Gloves 5. Pants 6. Shin Pads Equipment Required for Purchase: (MHC recommends purchasing used equipment whenever possible.) 1. Stick 2. Realistic use of the players below will generate statistical results remarkably similar to those from real life. IMPORTANT: When a Red "K" appears in the R-column as the result on any kind of running play from scrimmage or on any return, roll the dice again, refer to the K-column, and use the number there for the result. When a player has a "K" in his R-column, he can never be used for kicking or punting.     PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn SEATTLE SEAHAWKS Team History When the Seattle Seahawks took the field for the first time in the 1976 season, it marked the culmination of a quest for a National Football League franchise that had its roots in the Pacific Northwest metropolis as early as 1957. That is when discussion first began about the possibilities of constructing a domed stadium that would assure a major league sports franchise for the city. On June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded its 28th franchise to Seattle to play in the 64,984-seat Kingdome. A civic suggestion campaign netted 20,365 entries and 1,741 different names, but “Seahawks” was selected and announced on June 17, 1975. Just a little more than two months later, after a 27-day sale, the season ticket campaign was shut off with 59,000 tickets sold. On January 3, 1976, Jack Patera, who had been a Minnesota assistant coach, was named the team’s first head coach. The Seahawks finished 2-12 in 1976, when they played in the NFC, and 5-9 in 1977, when they moved into the AFC. The Seahawks had winning 9-7 records in both 1978 and 1979 and Patera was named NFL Coach of the Year the second year. The strike-shortened 1982 season proved to be a transitional year for all of pro football, but no club fit the transitional description better than the Seahawks. Patera was removed after six-plus years as head coach. Mike McCormack finished the season as interim head coach and then was replaced in 1983 by Chuck Knox, who guided the Seahawks to an 83-67-0 record in nine seasons up through the 1991 campaign.

Centreville: Tidewater Publishers, 1995. ports history has been one of the most rapidly growing subdisciplines of J social and cultural history. Almost nonexistent as an academic field two decades ago, its practitioners have since generated a wide-ranging literature, and the usual scholarly apparatus journals and professional organizations. Yet, as is often the case scholars study a topic of popular interest, their work has done little to excite or engage the general reader. Sports histories written for the average fan focus on the great athletes, teams, and games. Academic histories try to imbed those sports in the social and cultural milieu of their community, explaining why they attract the interest they do, and how they shape public space. Recently, two books have appeared which bridge the gap between the popular and the scholarly. Ironically, both also focus on the same team-the former Baltimore Colts of the National Football League. William Gildea's When the Colts Belonged to Baltimore: A Father and a Son, A Team and a Time is a personal memoir of what the team meant to him. Gildea was a young boy when the Colts were created. His father was a busy manager for a chain of drug stores. Watching, discussing, and reading about sports were central to their shared father-son experiences. Gildea describes their autumn ritual of attending mass, and driving across Baltimore to Memorial Stadium, sharing insights into the upcoming game.

    PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn WASHInGTOn REDSKInS Team History With three Super Bowl championships, the Washington Redskins are one of the NFL’s most dominant teams of the past quarter century. But the organization’s glorious past dates back almost 60 years and includes five world championships overall and some of the most innovative people and ideas the game has ever known. From George Preston Marshall to Jack Kent Cooke, from Vince Lombardi to Joe Gibbs, from Sammy Baugh to John Riggins, plus the NFL’s first fight song, marching band and radio network, the Redskins can be proud of an impressive professional football legacy. George Preston Marshall was awarded the inactive Boston franchise in July 1932. He originally named the team “Braves” because it used Braves Field, home of the National League baseball team. When the team moved to Fenway Park in July 1933, the name was changed to Redskins. A bizarre situation occurred in 1936, when the Redskins won the NFL Eastern division championship but Marshall, unhappy with the fan support in Boston,moved the championship game against Green Bay to the Polo Grounds in New York. Their home field advantage taken away by their owner, the Redskins lost. Not surprisingly, the Redskins moved to Washington, D.C., for the 1937 season. Games were played in Griffith Stadium with the opener on September 16, 1937, being played under flood lights. That year,Marshall created an official marching band and fight song, both firsts in the National Football League. That season also saw the debut of “Slinging Sammy” Baugh, a quarterback from Texas Christian who literally changed the offensive posture of pro football with his forward passing in his 16-season career.
