Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES “Evil is always waiting in the shadows and only one man would rise to stand against it.” Those are the words uttered about Ash Williams, who after three decades of avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the evil dead returns on Halloween night in “Ash vs Evil Dead,” the long awaited follow-up to the classic Evil Dead series. The 10- episode half-hour series follows Ash the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter as he is forced to face his demons, both personal and literal when a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from “Evil’s” grip. Bruce Campbell reprises his role as Ash Williams and is joined by Lucy Lawless as Ruby, a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks; Ray Santiago as Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick; Dana DeLorenzo as Kelly Maxwell, a moody wild child trying to outrun her past; and Jill Marie Jones as Amanda Fisher, a disgraced Michigan State Trooper set to find our anti-hero Ash and prove his responsibility in the grisly murder of her partner. Premiering on Halloween night, October 31st 2015, the series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers; and Craig DiGregorio who serves as executive producer and showrunner. Fans have been clamoring for more Evil Dead for years, according to Campbell and Raimi—as much as they loved the 2013 remake, it didn’t contain fan-favorite character Ashley J. -

224 Ash Vs Evil Dead, Season
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 16 (Autumn 2017) Ash vs Evil Dead, Season Two (Starz, 2016) Following the disappointment that was the last Evil Dead film of 2013, a movie that fans of Ashley Williams (the character played by Bruce Campbell in the original films, released in 1981, 1987, and 1992 respectively) had waited for over twenty years to experience, the prospect of a television series based on the Evil Dead films may have raised a few critical eyebrows.1 However, the success of Season One of Ash vs Evil Dead, which premiered on American television network Starz on 31 October 2015, served to remind horror fans that Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Robert Tapert (who were all involved in the original films) can still deliver when it comes to comedy gore, body horror, and demonology, by transposing their cult-film expertise onto the small screen. For audiences who adored the gore-laden, chainsaw-wielding wisecracks of the first season, Season Two of Ash vs Evil Dead, first aired by Starz on 2 October 2016, aims to further satisfy fans at the expense of its long-suffering, entrail-encrusted characters (and actors). From the opening episode, ‘Home’, we are immersed in Ash’s hometown of Elk Grove and meet his father Brock, played by the perfectly cast and suitably large-chinned Lee Majors. As Ash wallows in nostalgia, the audience may be surprised to learn that their hero has been cast out by the local community, labelled a multiple axe murderer, and is known as ‘Ashy Slashy’ for having (unwillingly) killed his possessed girlfriend and closest friends in a cabin in the woods, many years before. -

CAST BIOGRAPHIES BRUCE CAMPBELL (Ash)
CAST BIOGRAPHIES BRUCE CAMPBELL (Ash) In 1979 with his Detroit friends, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, Campbell raised $350,000 for a low-budget film, Evil Dead, in which he starred and co-executive produced. Completed piecemeal over four years, the film first gained notoriety in England where it became the best-selling video of 1983, beating out Poltergeist. After its appearance at Cannes, where Stephen King dubbed it “the most ferociously original horror film of the year,” New Line Cinema stepped forward to release Evil Dead in the U.S. After co-producing Crimewave, a cross-genre comedy, Campbell moved to Los Angeles and quickly gained a foothold producing or starring in genre films such as the Maniac Cop series, Lunatics: A Love Story, Moontrap and Mindwarp, a post-apocalyptic Jeremiah Johnson, during which he met his wife-to-be, filmmaker, Ida Gearon. Campbell then rejoined his Detroit colleagues to star and co-produce the second and third films in the Evil Dead trilogy, completing 12 years of work on the cult favorite. This rough-and-tumble background was a plus as Campbell made his foray into television, first starring in the highly touted Fox series “The Adventures Of Brisco County Jr.,” then as a recurring guest-star on the hit show “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” With these under his belt, Campbell easily made the transition to director, helming numerous episodes and recurring as the King of Thieves in the #1 syndicated “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” and its follow-up phenomenon, “Xena: Warrior Princess.” Bruce has since expanded his range on television, with appearances in Disney's TV movies Gold Rush, and their update of The Love Bug. -
Cult Films and Film Cults: from the Evil Dead to Titanic
CULT FILMS AND FILM CULTS: FROM THE EVIL DEAD TO TITANIC A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Benjamin A. M.A. June 2004. Film Theory and Criticism Cult Films and Film Cults: From The Evil Dead to Titanic (71pp.) Director of Thesis: Ruth Bradley This thesis will explore the relationship between a theoretical definition of the specialized audience practice associated with the cult film from Telotte, Kawin and Staiger and the contemporary user-defined genre of the same name. It is my belief that the study of cult films could be greatly clarified by separating cult audience practice from the cult film text itself. By combining a survey of theoretical literature of audience reception and practice and genre theory with internet based primary source material generated by members of contemporary cult fan communities, I hope to construct a set of more distinct and useful definitions of cult films and film cult practices. Spider-Man 3 (2007) Directed by Sam Raimi
I’m Already in Denial By Fearless Young Orphan Spider-Man 3 (2007) Directed by Sam Raimi Two weeks ago, I would not have considered chunking Spider-Man 3. Know why? Because I had only seen it once. I caught all three Spider- Man films directed by Sam Raimi during their opening weeks in theaters. I enjoyed the first, absolutely loved the second, and was eager for the third. I went and saw it. I was underwhelmed, but forgiving. I believe I was I know how he feels. under the influence of cultural hysteria. Everything in the media and in my own affectionate heart was telling me that I must have liked this movie. Sure, it had its flaws. Many of them. But I could forgive the flaws, because it was Spider-Man! It was Sam Raimi! I’ve adored Sam Raimi’s work since The Evil Dead and he would never do something like . well, no, it’s just . let’s talk about something else. Okay, so for about four years now I’ve been thinking that the only real problem with Spider-Man 3 was that it crammed too much into one film. From the day I saw the movie I was of the opinion that the villain Venom should have had a separate film which featured him alone as the villain. Making Venom a bookend to a film that already had two serviceable villains in the form of Sandman and Harry-as-New-Goblin was wasteful. Venom is awesome and deserves his own movie, particularly since Raimi wisely used Topher Grace in the role of Eddie Brock and, hell, the sometimes under-noticed Grace was all over that part.
