Brad Forder Director of Development Jessie Brinkley As the Environmental Film Festival launches its annual celebration of film and the Director of Public Relations environment on screens across Washington, D.C., we consider the vital role played by Helen Strong parks and protected areas in preserving the natural world. “Parks: Protecting Wild,” Director of Online Communications the theme of a selection of 2016 Festival films, salutes the Centennial of the U.S. and Engagement National Park Service while recognizing the value of parks in conserving our planet’s Saaret Yoseph resources—forests, wildlife, fresh air, and clean water—in the U.S. and around the world. Our Opening Night film, Sherpa, takes place in Nepal’s Sagarmatha Molly Berg National Park, and captures the highly dangerous work of the Sherpas in summiting Programming Consultant Everest and a major tragedy on the mountain. Director Ian Cheney will screen his latest BOARD OF DIRECTORS work, Bluespace, an exploration of terraforming Mars, and Holly Morris will show The Chair: Caroline D. Gabel Babushkas of Chernobyl about women who return to live in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Vice Chair: Gary Rahl on some of the most toxic land on earth. Treasurer: John van D. Lewis Secretary: Max Williamson Chilean documentarian Patricio Guzman’s The Pearl Button, an award-winner from Elizabeth Berry, Marion Guggenheim, Anita the Berlin Film Festival, illuminating the intersection between the waterways of his Herrick, Annie Kaempfer, Dan M.     Debunking Gasland, Part II Steve Team Lead Three years after the release of Gasland – a film panned by independent observers as “fundamentally dishonest” and a “polemic” – the main challenge for director Josh Fox in releasing Gasland Part II was manifest: Regain the public’s trust by discarding hyperbole and laying out the challenges and opportunities of shale development as they actually exist in the actual world. In short, do everything a documentary filmmaker should do, but which he chose not to do in Gasland. Unfortunately for those who attended the premiere of Gasland Part II this past weekend (we were there), Josh eschewed that path entirely, doubling down on the same old, tired talking points, and playing to his narrow base at the exclusion of all others. The Parker County case? It’s in there. Dimock? Probably receives more focus than anything else. Pavillion and EPA? You bet. And yes, that damned banjo of his makes an appearance or two as well. This isn’t Gasland Part II, folks. It’s Gasland Too. Sure, the sequel has some new cast members and a few new claims. Somehow, Fox discovers that shale is actually worse than he previously thought: Earthquakes. Methane leaks. Well failures. Hurricanes. Heck, viewers were probably waiting for swarms of locusts to appear – fracking locusts, to be sure. And there was plenty of spectacle, too. Yoko Ono was in the audience. So was former Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), the congressman who lent his name to the infamous “FRAC Act” that Josh so desperately wants to become law.

Fuller was a victim of a workplace accident, and his ongoing medical issues have led him to hire Laura to see if she can reopen his case. He’s stubborn and won’t listen to Laura’s advice – though he seems to heed it when the same counsel comes from a male colleague. Thinking he has no other option, Fuller decides to take a security guard hostage in order to get his demands met. Laura must act as intermediary and exchange herself for the hostage, trying to convince Fuller to give himself up.

    www.influencefilmforum.com Gasland Discussion Guide Director: Josh Fox Year: 2010 Time: 107 min You might know this director from: Gasland Part II (2013) The Sky Is Pink (2012) FILM SUMMARY GASLAND is an unflinching investigation into the relatively new, yet highly controversial drilling practice known as “fracking” which is used to extract natural gas from the ground. This road movie follows filmmaker Josh Fox who was offered $100,000 for the natural gas drilling rights to his property on the border of New York and Pennsylvania but turned it down. Instead, he set off on a cross-country journey to see for himself the startling environmental and health risks faced by those who have agreed to sell the drilling rights on their land to the gas industry. In one highly memorable scene, a man who recently allowed fracking on his land is standing in his kitchen. As he lights a match under the running faucet, the water bursts into flames. This crazy occurrence is presumably the result of fracking. Fox also shines a light on the power of big business over government policy in the U.S. by looking at the agenda of former Vice-President Dick Cheney. In 2005, Cheney’s Energy Task Force pushed through a provision to the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act that exempted corporations like Halliburton (where Cheney was once CEO) from revealing the chemicals used in fracking. This led to the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history. GASLAND has been embraced by those who consider fracking to be a serious health and environmental threat, and it’s sparked a debate in the U.S.

Reichardt's dramas are small-scale symphonies; alchemical transmogrifications of the ordinary into gripping cinematic experiences. Often collaborating with the same creatives across multiple pictures, such as actor Michelle Williams and writer Jonathan Raymond, Reichardt's films turn the WENDY AND LUCY lens on those in some way at the margins of American communities.
