July 2012 Upcoming Events From the Commodore 07/07/2012 - 08/07/2012 Weymouth Keel boat Regatta The first of the Castle Cove Olympic events is set for Friday 6th July 12/07/2012 when we will be part of the 1948 Torch Relay from Torbay to Weymouth. Olympic Torch Relay The Torch will be arriving early Friday evening, carried into the club by our cadets and available for all to see. We will then be presenting our 14/07/2012 - 15/07/2012 teams with their Olympic quilts. In traditional Castle Cove style, please Weymouth Dinghy Regatta bring a plate of finger food to share and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and the company of our teams for the evening. 29/07/2012 Friday also marks the start of the Weymouth Regatta (Keelboats 7-8 Start of the Olympic Sailing Events July and Dinghies 14-15 July) and the Spirit of the Sea festival. The weekend of dinghy regatta is going to be extra-ordinarily busy – we are 30/07/2012 hosting well over 100 boats (mostly parked on the beach) and this year Barn Dance we will be hosting the Saturday evening social which is set to be quite an evening! The boat park will be full to over-flowing; in addition to the 05/08/2012 regatta, the Academy starts its lock down on Friday 13th July and will Cream Tea be carrying out the security sweep during the weekend. Clearly, there will be very little opportunity of parking at the club and I would ask you to seek out those old parking locations away from the club or come by bike or on foot. That said do come and join in with what I am sure will be the busiest weekend at the club this year. The 2012 Olympic Torch will be transported from WPNSA on the evening of Thursday 12 July to Weymouth Beach to light the cauldron and start the evening celebrations. It would be nice to have a “flotilla” (dressed overall if possible) from CCSC in the Harbour as it goes across. It leaves the Academy at 6.42 p.m. to arrive at Weymouth Beach at 7.30 p.m. Finally, to the Olympic fortnight – there will be no great take-over of the club by a corporate hospitality provider, so we are free to make our own entertainment. Currently there is a barn dance planned and we are plan- ning a big closing ceremony party. If you fancy organising something let us know. We are investing in a large TV to allow us to watch the activ- ity while displaying internet tracking on the projector – bring your own binoculars! What a better way to watch the racing than in the company of your fellow members and friends – the bar and galley will be open. Castle Cove SC http://www.ccsc.org.uk From the Sailing Secretary Well I know summer hasn’t really shown it’s true colours yet but we have still had some great sailing and social occasions at the club. The month started with the Jubilee weekend, with the parade of sail on the Sunday, quite a few boats from the club took part and all came back hav- ing enjoyed the occasion – we even had a yacht being towed after a few engine troubles! On the Monday we had a pursuit race with Sam Barker and Helena Pugh coming out on top in the Lark – it was a close finish with an Osprey and Enterprise only just missing out. The sun came out for the Jubilee BBQ, the balcony and clubhouse looked great all decked out with bunting and flags. With almost 140 people enjoying the BBQ a big thank you has to go to those who slaved away all evening – Richard Wood and Alex Adams. It was a great evening with eve- ryone bringing along salads and many helping out in the bar. Richard Bowers and all the Sociables did a great job of putting on a lovely evening for us, thank you! The following weekend we had the Allen Welling, another windy affair with a good turnout out considering the condi- tions. We have had a few races cancelled so look out for the rescheduling of the Novice and Crews race. The Regatta is almost upon us, get your en- tries in quick if you still want to take part. We are looking for a few volunteers still to help out at the Dinghy Regatta, if you feel you could help for a few hours or a day please let me know ([email protected]), I will make sure you are given something to do you are comfortable doing! And hot off the press – Round the Island was this weekend and a number of boats took part – well done to all that took part, results are below, with a special mention to Bob Turner and Alex Adams racing on a Sigma 362 – winning their class of 45 boats and 27th overall in IRC and Bill Barker racing an Elan 295 – winning their class and 22nd overall in ISC. Apply the fob and push or pull the door open as before. Opening the doors from the inside is unchanged. Whilst keys can still be used, please use your fobs to reduce wear and breakage on our dwindling stock of key blanks and locks. Fobs are waterproof so are ideal for both applications, making it easier to open the doors and reducing the temptation to wedge the doors open. The bottom locks on both doors must still be used for initial unlocking and locking up when no-one else is around. Thanks are due to all who helped make this system work. Steve Green Olympic Events at the club We are planning a few events to be held at the club during the Olympics. Each day there will be food and drink (of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic variety!) available, opening times will be advertised nearer the time. We hope to have large screen TV showing Olympic events live or highlights of the days sail- ing but we would also love members to organise special events if you would like to during the games. The Social notice board will hold a rota and details of events along with ‘sign up’ lists. So far we have planned: • Barn Dance 30th July • Cream Tea 5th August • Des Quik & Friends TBC If you would like to organise or help to organise an event please contact Richard Bowers (Rick.Bow- [email protected] 07795 025611). Dogs on Lead Policy We try to be a family friendly orientated club and welcome families and their pets, but please could dog owners clean up after their dogs. Dog mess poses a serious health hazard as well as being very unpleasant to clean it off your child, boat, sails, clothes etc. If this problem continues we will have no option than to introduce dogs on lead policy for the club grounds. I am currently seeking data on Weymouth resident’s opinons of the olympic event as part of an aca- demic research paper and wonder if you were able to forward the following link to club members with a request that they press the following link to a completely anonymous, and short, on-line survey. The survey only takes a few minutes. I attach an informed consent form which explains more. The study seeks to find out more about the sentiments of the local community towards a major event in their com- munity and will compare the results against empirical research to find whether the results are typical. My thanks goes out to all who may respond. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DBTXJZ2 Sincerely Graham Dr. Graham Bowcher MIH, FBII Department Head Hospitality Management Program Bethune-Cookman University Daytona Beach, FL 32114, USA E-Mail: [email protected] Notice to Mariners 7/12 WEYMOUTH &PORTLAND BOROUGH COUNCIL WEYMOUTH HARBOUR Notice to Mariners No.07/12(T) Harbour Swim Saturday 7th July 2012 Mariners are advised that a Cross Harbour Swim will take place at 1030 on Saturday 7th July 2012 as part of the seafood festival Approximately 30 swimmers will race from Custom House Quay pontoons to Cove pontoons entering the water at 1030.
