The Weymouth Mission
The Weymouth Mission This story of Christian witness in Dorset is based on an account drawn up in 1991, using documents and photographs from the Parish archives, at the request of Fr Patrick Mulvaney, and Fr Joseph Phelan who were at that time Parish Priests at St Augustine’s and St Joseph’s Churches respectively. The original archive is now believed lost. The account also includes a contribution from the late Gwen Greenslade OPL who researched the history of the Dominican Order in Weymouth. In the Beginning... Christianity in South Dorset goes back to Roman times. Constantine the Great allowed toleration to Christians in 313 AD and Christianity became the State Religion of the Empire in 324 AD. The mosaic floor at Hinton St Mary depicts Christ and the chi-rho sign. Many of the burials at Poundbury indicate Christians. Perhaps the Roman settlement at Radipole had Christians in its population during the 4th Century. When the Saxons broke through to Dorset in the 7th century they were mainly Christians, as St Augustine and friends had done their work well in the South East. By the 13th century, Weymouth on the west bank of the harbour, and Melcombe on the east side were fully fledged towns. The Church at Radipole is said to be the oldest building in the Weymouth area and dates from about 1250. It was originally dedicated to St Mary, and served Melcombe Regis. All Saints Church at Wyke served Weymouth. The French had a nasty habit of raiding the towns when the inhabitants were away attending Mass at the two churches. -

Question from David Nash Those of us who live in the vicinity of the current building in Wimborne Rd, or have to travel along that route at school start and finish times know only too well the impact caused by some 12-15 minibuses, as well as parents providing their own vehicles, used to transport these vulnerable children to and fro. Could you please ask the committee to take this into account when considering the site earmarked for expansion, the old Wimborne 1st that was, as it is located in a very narrow lane (School Lane) leading directly into traffic flowing from the north, Blandford, Cranborne etc., via Stone Lane through and around Wimborne town centre. Parking in West Borough is limited and congested at the best of times. Indeed, this often presented some difficulty / snarl ups at the peak times when the site was still a School. The number of minibuses School Lane could accommodate would be no more than 5, and turning would present a nightmare to both students, parents and members of the public in the Lane at the time. An accident waiting to happen! Access / Egress will have to be drastically improved before the site can be used for this important and very necessary purpose. Does the proposal make provision for addressing the major Health & Safety issues for students, staff, and members of the public, which using the old 1st School will doubtless present, particularly as most students are potentially vulnerable and have to be driven to site by minibus or parental transport? 2. -

Appendix A Consultation on Proposed Dog- Related Public Spaces Protection Order There are a number of existing dog-related Public Spaces Protection Orders (‘PSPOs’) across the Dorset Council area. These were introduced by the former District and Borough Councils which have now become part of the new unitary Dorset Council. Some of these Orders will soon naturally expire and the council is taking the opportunity to consolidate them into one. The intention is that the new Order will provide clarity and consistency across the area for dog owners and non-owners alike about dog controls on public open spaces. We are required to consult with the public and other stakeholders on the content of new or revised PSPOs. This may see changes to the previous Orders dependent upon the views expressed. Councillors will make the final decision on the controls to be included in the new Order, having regard to the feedback received during the consultation. The views of residents, visitors and businesses are therefore very important and a period of consultation will run for 12 weeks finishing at 4.30pm on Friday ADD DATE. To have your say, please complete this short survey, it should take about 15 minutes or less for the 34 questions related to the proposal and a further 6 ‘about you’. Situated on the north shore of the harbour and extending to Lodmoor Hill, it includes Weymouth seafront, town centre and the residential areas of Greenhill and the Park District. Yet, despite its attributes it is the Borough ward with most evidence of multiple deprivation and is within the 10% most deprived neighbourhoods in the country (Public Health England Local Health Profiles 2015). It scores high levels of deprivation in living environment; education; skills and training; health; employment; income and crime. The area has seen few improvements since the previous index was published in 2010. Melcombe Regis has many great features that are enjoyed by locals and thousands of visitors every year. But it is a ward with many constituent parts. The blend of private and rented housing, homes of multiple occupancy; hotels; guesthouses and retail; commercial and leisure activities make up a very diverse area. Despite performing relatively well, Melcombe Regis has suffered from the structural decline of seaside resort towns, low paid seasonal jobs and cheap, poorer quality housing has created a high transient population many with complex needs. Health and wellbeing is affected by a variety of factors, some of which are amenable to change, either by personal choice such as diet or by external influences, for instance changes to the local environment. -

The sheer size of the beach and the varying size and shape of the beach material are just some of the reasons why this beach is of worldwide interest and importance. Chesil Beach is an 18 mile long shingle bank that stretches north-west from Portland to West Bay. It is mostly made up of chert and flint pebbles that vary in size along the beach with the larger, smoother pebbles towards the Portland end. The range of shapes and sizes is thought to be a result of the natural sorting process of the sea. The southern part of the beach towards Portland shelves steeply into the sea and continues below sea level, only levelling off at 18m depth. It is slightly shallower at the western end where it levels off at a depth of 11m. This is mirrored above sea level where typically the shingle ridge is 13m high at Portland and 4m high at West Bay. For 8 miles Chesil Beach is separated from the land by the Fleet lagoon - a shallow stretch of water up to 5m deep.
