Dear OHSBCA Members, Welcome to the 63nd annual OHSBCA State Clinic. This 2014 state coaches clinic is entitled “Tools of the Trade” since we all are here to gain the valuable tools needed to make our teams be the best at their trade. The Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association remains the 2nd largest coaches association in the United States. With the number of high school and college coaches in attendance, our great lineup of speakers traveling from 8 different states, and our vendors from all over the country, this clinic is most assuredly one of the best in the entire country. I have had the opportunity to be member of this great association for 23 years, 21 as a head coach at three different schools across the state. With my involvement on this board for the past 6 years, I have seen the giant steps forward the association has made. It is my honor to give back as Director of the 2014 State Clinic. This venue at the Hyatt Regency and Columbus Convention Center is just one example of what a fi rst class operation we all are here to witness. If there is anything that any of our 24 board members or the Hyatt personnel can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please let us know. Your board is committed to making this a most enjoyable and rewarding experience, and represents you throughout the entire year. We have the opportunity to recognize and honor four (4) of our own with their induction into our OHSBCA Hall of Fame this weekend: John Dorner, Chuck Harlow, Ron Janey, Jeff Short. I truly hope that you take the opportunity to attend our banquet on Friday noon in the Ballroom to honor these four great men who have given so much to their schools, community and our association. There are also many other awards given to your peers and scholarships to the children of our members; you should not miss this banquet. I have taken great pride in putting together a great lineup of clinic speakers who have a variety of messages that will help you attain “Tools of the Trade.” During my 21 years as a head coach, I have attended as many clinic sessions as I can and feel the OHSBCA clinic is second to none in the speakers we provide. I would ask you to do the same and I have to believe that you may possibly take more than one “Tool of the Trade” from this list of speakers: Rob Smith-Ohio University Steve Farley- Butler University Bob Morgan- Former Indiana University Scott Stricklin- University of Georgia Greg Beals- The Ohio State University Justin Dehmer- One Pitch Warrior Keith Vorhoff- University of Kentucky Brad Warnimont- University of Rio Grande Brian Harrison- Baldwin Wallace Brian McGee- Lake Erie College Ty Neal- University of Cincinnati Joe Meglio- Meglio Fitness Steve Trimper- University of Maine Josh Newman- Marshall University Mike McGuire- Morehead State University Dean Schuler- Valley High School Rex Stump-Fellowship of Christian Athletes Kris Knapp-Ontario HS Wes Ganobcik- Columbus Clippers Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the entire OHSBCA Board of Directors for their dedication and hard work to this organization. He began teaching and coaching at Lebanon H.S. in 1979 as a varsity assistant in football, sophomore basketball coach and JV baseball coach. He was named the head baseball coach for the 1982 season at the young age of 24 and also served as the head football coach from 1985-87. Welcome from OHSBCA President, Lee Day Welcome everyone to our 63rd annual State Clinic. It has been my great honor to have served on the Executive Board for 10 years as the Southwest District Rep and the past 3 years going through the Presidency chairs, and now only 1 year left. This time next year, I will be ending 14 years on this Board. I would recommend this to any coach who would like to give back to the greatest sport of any, have the opportunity to meet a lot of great individuals, and serve an organization dedicated to the young men who play America’s game. When I began coaching 35 years ago, I did not set out to do this; but, I would not trade a minute of my experience. Thanks to Tim Engleka for asking me to serve on the OHSBCA Board. This organization is in great hands with the leadership you have elected: Dave Hall, Trevor Thomas, Kevin Yoder, Dave Barrow, Scott Manahan, Dave Burkett, Ray Benjamin, Jeff Mielcarek, Frank Gamble, Curt Karpinski, and Don Schone. 35 BRIAN McGEE Head Coach Lake Erie College Email: [email protected] Friday 10:00-10:30 AM “ 1st & 3rd Situational Defense” (Grant/Harding)

“A DEFENSE FOR EVERY OFFENSE” FIRST AND THIRD SITUATIONAL DEFENSE Defending against a team with runners on fi rst base and third base is one of the most challenging situations in all of base- ball to be in. The offensive team has several options at this point in the inning which could create a great deal of pressure and confusion for an unprepared defensive team. In many cases, the offense wins these battles because teams just aren’t prepared or planned out defensively. A coach must have his team primed and alert for what could happen next, you must have “a defense for every offense”. Remember, many times the offense will want to accomplish one of two things: (1) steal a run with the runner from third base, or (2) stay out of the double play by advancing the runner at fi rst base up to second base. Step 1: Evaluate the game situation • First questi on: who is the important out; the “2 Run Rule” • Speed of runners on base, who is the fastest? • Type of hitt er at plate • Score and inning of game • Number of outs and the diff erence between 2 outs and less than two outs • Ability and arm strength of the defensive players Step 2: Determine your defensive strategy • Coach gives player defensive sign, player relays the play to team • 2 out scenario • PLAY 1: THROW THROUGH TO SECOND BASE • PLAY 2: THROW TO SECOND BASE WITH OPTION TO CUT • PLAY 3: THROW TO THIRD BASE or FAKE TO SECOND THROW TO THIRD • PLAY 4: THROW STRAIGHT TO SHORT STOP • PLAY 5: THROW TO PITCHER • PLAY 6: EARLY BREAK DEFENSE • PLAY 7: THIRD TO FIRST MOVE • PLAY 8: PITCH OUT Step 3: Execute the defensive play • Each positi on has a responsibility - eyes up and alert, know where to be/what to do • Catching and Throwing - handle the baseball, errorless • Communicate - runner breaks, being another’s eyes, etc. • Holding runners - pitchers ti me to plate, step off , throw over, verbal alerts, etc. • Control the rundown - one throw, no more than two • Don’t hold the ball - that isn’t a play, don’t show them your weakness KEYS TO REMEMBER: • THINK AHEAD • Get base runner moving at full speed • Keep the base runner moving back in the directi on or the base he came from • No close plays at the base ahead • Be aware of the runners distance off third, and listening for your third baseman’s alert • Don’t force off balanced throws • Never throw through with tying and/or winning run on third base • A great deal of responsibility falls on the “battery” between your pitcher and catcher • Recommended times to run 1st/3rd offense: 2 outs best time, 1 out is okay, 0 out never POSSIBLE OFFENSIVE STRATEGIES FOR FIRST AND THIRD SITUATIONS YOU MAY HAVE TO DEFEND: • (1) DOUBLE STEAL, (2) BIG LEAD, (3) EARLY BREAK, (4) FIRST MOVE ON LEFTY, (5) DELAY STEAL

2013 Season Highlights Winning the 2013 state championship was an incredible journey!! We began the season as the defending state champions and knew we would get everyone’s best shot during the season and the tournament. We returned just three starting position players and only ten from our 2012 state championship team, so this team had to quickly create its own identity. The 23 players battled every day in conditioning, practice and games to get better and to make the Moeller community proud. After starting off the season 11-0, we lost two out of three games. It was a tough pill to swallow, but it helped the team to regain its focus and we went on to win our fi nal 20 games and capture Moeller’s seventh state baseball title in 50 years of varsity baseball. A big thank you goes out to my coaching staff and their commitment to the Moeller baseball program—Andy Nagel, Tony Maccani, Jason Cisper, Marc Marini, Mike Cameron, Mike Hayes, Pat McLaughlin, Ron Roth and Ken Robinson. A bigger thank you goes to my wife, Leslie, and two boys, Drew (9) and Alex (6) for the sacrifi ces they make to allow me to coach every spring.

2013 Highlights Winning the State title was very rewarding for the Defi ance baseball program as this is only the second time in history (1992). This team was picked second in our league to Wapakoneta (2012 State Runners-up) and was able to win the league as well as win the State Title with a school record 31 wins. We had 10 seniors on the team and only four of them were full-time players. Each and everyone of those seniors new their role and were major contributors throughout the season. The players were the main reason this team was able to accomplish what they did, but if it wasn’t for our coaching staff this could not have happened. I would like to thank our assistant coaches, Rick Weaver, Braondon Fisher, Collin Trudel, Shane Coleman, Mark Vittorio, Justin Sonnenberg, Eric Fishpaw, and Bryan Flory. I would also like to thank my wife Deanne and 3 kids, Chayse, Cassidy, and Calvin for allowing me to spend so much time with our great game of baseball. 39 MOELLER - DIVISION I CHAMPIONS

2013 Season Highlights The 2013 baseball season was truly a blessing for our baseball program and community. After winning our school’s second state championship in baseball in 2012, our team demonstrated that they had the mental toughness it would take to travel the road to another championship. From day one, this team decided to accept the challenge and embrace the ingredients that have become characteristic with our program: the selfl ess attitude that our team carries itself with to foster a sense of brotherhood, the integrity to be good citizens both on and off the fi eld, and a ferocious passion to play the game with intensity and discipline on a consistent basis. It was truly a pleasure to watch these young men compete and incorporate these values into every aspect of their lives. We were led by six seniors who decided that past accomplishments would not defi ne their fi nal season wearing the orange and black, and with their commitment level, the other players followed suit and we traveled the path toward achieving our goals. The season culminated with our school’s 3rd State Championship in baseball and lifetime of memories for our players and community that will never be forgotten. I would like to thank my Lord for blessing our program and providing the opportunity for our team to be successful. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to our players for their commitment to excellence, and most of all for their friendship which will remain in the hearts of our coaching staff for eternity. And speaking of my co- head coaches, your effort and dedication to serving our young men is the reason why our program is where it is today. Thank you and your families for the sacrifi ces you make to help develop the young people in our community. Finally, I would like to thank our administration and community for their continued support, and most of all, my wife Jennifer and daughters Bailee, Rilee, and Ava, for their patience and love during the year to help make this a family affair.

It was a well played contest that we were fortunate to edge past the Tigers 2-1. Our team was hungry to win our school’s seventh state baseball title. Several players in our had experienced not only losing in the state baseball tourney a couple times in the past, but also a Final Four in basketball, and the 2012 Div VI title game in football. I also believe the strength of our regular season schedule helped inject the maturity of our players to a very high level. A special thanks to our players, coaches, administrators and parents for a job well done. Our title game crowd, estimated at 4,000 fans, was fantastic. As a team in our eight post-season games, we had a team batting average of .463, outscoring our opposition 110-8. We had 21 offensively. Defensively, four runs were unearned. We committed just four errors, three of those in one game, and has one passed ball. This was a fun bunch to coach. Humm Baby!

BASE RUNNING: SLIDING: • One of the most under taught aspects of the game Why we slide • Practice during batting practice for live looks - avoid tag • Utilize BP screens - slow down - avoid injury Out of the Box Rule Bent leg slide………..”Figure 4” - Fly balls get to 2nd base - Ground balls get to OF grass Pop-up slide….great vision and fastest to move on On deck hitters help at home plate 1. First Base: Back door slides Primary leads: 3 ½ steps……off set feet like a “sprinter” BUNTING: Secondary leads: 2 shuffl es before action Three Reasons why you would bunt: 1. To move a runner into scoring position. (Sacrifi ce) 2. Stealing second base: “7.2 runners can steal 20 2. To get on base. (Drag, Push) bases” 3. To score a run. (Squeeze) Clear hips with elbow, stay low like an airplane Grip…..bottom hand middle of tape, top hand at label taking off Don’t drop the barrel…use knees to get low pitch Look for tendencies in pitcher Timing is only thing different for sac, base hit or squeeze Draw out good moves…One way leads Sac: pitcher movement Run on off speed counts Base hit: separation of hands Look for lazy catcher with signs Squeeze: point of no return First move on LHP and RH right handed fi rst Keep ball away from pitcher basemen (watch for fl ip Left handed batter- left foot on ground stepping at move) pitcher on contact 3. Stealing third base: SLASH: Walking leads Automatic on crash defenses rd Utilize 3 base coach- Verbal cues Early Square around See grip of pitcher for running pitch Pitcher point of no return to load 4. Hit and Run: An aggressive sacrifi ce (PLAYING Weight on front foot FOR A BIG INNING) Grip to middle of the tape Coaches…..hitter’s counts…need a strike….NOT COACHING THE BASES: WITH 2 OUTS!!!! 1st base coach helps on pick offs One way lead….do not get picked off - When trying to see a “LAZY CATCHER” In, out, over - Back door picks from 1st baseman Do not get fooled on INF deek play Pop-up slide 3rd base coach: Simple, but hidden signs Other base running points: Give signs with runners on the bag Delay steal- extra shuffl e step in secondary lead Have runner show number of outs Run and Hit- 3-1 and 3-2 counts… steal the base Help runners steal 3rd base Fake bunt and Run(Squeeze situation) Only help runners with 1st to 3rd and ball to RF 2-2-2 running count Scoring with ball in OF

2013 Season Highlights Winning the State title was very rewarding for the Defi ance baseball program as this is only the second time in history (1992). I would like to thank our assistant coaches, Rick Weaver, Brandon Fisher, Collin Trudel, Shane Coleman, Mark Vittorio, Justin Sonnenberg, EricFishpaw, and Bryan Flory. I would also like to thank my wife Deanne and 3 kids, Chayse, Cassidy, and Calvin for allowing me to spend so much time with our great game of baseball. 2013 Season Highlights The 2013 Ontario team was led by fi ve outstanding seniors. Tyler Beal, Mitch McCristal, Vinny Sansalone, Wyatt Clemons and Justin Henry were great players and leaders. Ontario won 20 plus games a year all four of their high school years. The seniors were part of 2 District Championships, 3 NCC Championships, 3 Sectional Championships and two State Poll Championships. Ontario won the North Central Conference championship for the second straight year. We lost to Bloom -Carroll in the Regionals. Twenty seven wins set a new school record. We played outstanding defense with only 35 errors in 31 games. Our hitting was solid with a team BA .375 and only 74 strikeouts. Mitch McCristal and Tyler Beal had over 20 wins apiece over the last two years. Mitch McCristal and Vinny Sansalone are playing ball at Mt Union and Wyatt Clemons is playing outfi eld for Grace College. I believe a huge reason for our success has been team chemistry and an unbelievable work ethic. Our players treated each other with respect and worked harder than any team I have coached. Although we came up short in the District Title game, we did win two invitational tournaments (Redskin Classic and the WCSM/St. Henry Bank Invitational). Our biggest victory of the season came on the road at Minster, who entered the game ranked #1 in the state and the 2 time defending state champions. We won the game by a score of 8-6. Our pitching and defense combined to hold our opponents to three runs or less in 23 or our 30 games. We ended up outscoring our opponents by a total of 208-83 on the season. The Redskins were lead by three seniors: Derek Rindler (CF), Alex Post (SS), and Devin Froning (3B). Rindler earned First Team All Ohio Honors and a spot in the Mizuno All Star Series. Junior teammate, Jeff Paul, also earned First Team All Ohio Honors at the Utility Position. “Not every player received individual honors in 2013, but every person in the program earned the recognition as a State Poll Champion. I wish to thank the entire team for devoting so much time and effort into a great season.” “I have been incredibly fortunate to coach in a supportive community with an outstanding and loyal coaching staff, all of whom are former players at St. Henry High School. These men have dedicated numerous years and countless hours toward the success of St. Henry Baseball and deserve the biggest share of credit for our success. I would like to acknowledge Dave Borger (23 years as J.V. Coach), Neil Schmitz (10 years as Varsity Assistant), Bill Gast (9 years as Varsity Assistant), Kyle Kunk (5 years as Freshman Coach), Jordan Jacobs (5 years as Varsity Assistant), and Josh Link (3 years as Varsity Assistant). A special thank you should also be extended to the Administration at St. Henry Schools for all of your support. And fi nally, most of all, I can never express enough gratitude to my lovely wife, Brenda, and our children, Nora and Mitchell, for letting me be a small part of such a wonderful baseball tradition at St. Henry Schools.
