Throughout the year the LU-SEG chapter typically brings in guest lecturers to give both technical talks and talks designed to help transition students into the mineral exploration and mining industries. With the 2020- 2021 school year taking place entirely online, the LU-SEG was not able to organize any in-person meetings or guest lectures. In lieu, of in-person meetings or guest lectures, the LU-SEG chapter promoted online Laurentian University SEG Student Chapter Annual Report 2020 2

3) Social Events

All social events were restricted to online platforms, since Laurentian University remained closed throughout the 2020-2021 academic year, and in person social gatherings were prohibited by the federal health guidelines. Several online events took place throughout the year including online trivia matches, shuffling breakout rooms (zoom) and video streaming of past SEG field trips.

Fall Meet and Greet (October 8th, 2020): An online social event followed the October 8th general meeting, which served to introduce the LUSEG student chapter executive and upcoming events for the 2020-2021 academic year. This consisted of shuffling breakout rooms over zoom and streaming of the video from the 2020 LUSEG Colombia field trip.

Holiday Party (December 12th, 2020): The Laurentian University SEG Student Chapter hosted a holiday party for all members of the Harquail School of Earth Sciences. Approximately 60 people attended. There was no cost, however, an optional $5 donation fee was accepted for people who wanted to participate in an online trivia match, which was played over the Kahoot app. This served as a small fundraiser for upcoming field trips.

4) Future Plans 2021-2022:

An online election was called to elect the new executive members for the academic year 2020-2021. The following were elected:

President : Michael Tamosauskas ([email protected]) Vice-President : Gabrielle Fouillard ([email protected]) Treasurer : Julian Melo ([email protected]) Secretary: Mohammed Farhat ([email protected])

Day 4 Rouyn-Noranda: identifying features of VMS deposits Ɣ Outcrop tour around Rouyn-Noranda with Marina Schofield Ɣ Core viewing with Yorbeau Resources geologists/Dr. Howard Poulsen

Day 5 Depart from Rouyn-Noranda to Sudbury

Spring 2022 – Newfoundland:

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions the planned field trip to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador was regrettably postponed and is now planned for spring 2022. Newfoundland and Labrador has a rich mining history and continues to this day to be an important and emerging producer of several commodities including: zinc, copper, nickel, iron, gold, and industrial minerals such as fluorospar, gypsum, and building stone. This trip will give students the opportunity to become more familiar with the geology of eastern Canada, which is extremely different from the geology of the Sudbury area and will expose them to a variety of ore deposit types including: orogenic gold, Mississippi-Valley-type Zn-Pb, iron formations, volcanogenic massive sulphides, magmatic nickel-copper-PGEs, and more. Newfoundland and Labrador is also home to many geologic wonders including the official Precambrian- Cambrian boundary, an exceptionally well-preserved ophiolite sequence, and the Dover fault – the contact between the North American plate and a sliver of the European plate remaining after a 540 Ma collision.

Meetings and Guest Lectures

Since, the 2021-2022 school year will return to an in-person format, the LU-SEG will endeavour to organize in-person guest lectures, following the COVID-19 safety regulations. One talk is tentatively organized for the fall of 2021 by Dr. Benoit Dubé, who will be presenting his talk “Gold deposits of the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt, Canada.”

Workshops and Courses

The following courses and workshops have been discussed or confirmed for the coming academic year:

Fall, 2021: Introduction to Leapfrog course (online) with Marco Nieto of MPX Geophysics.

Spring, 2022: Core logging workshop with Wallbridge Mining (if possible)

5) Fundraising programs for the 2020-2021 year:

The executive committee successfully managed to raise approximately CAD$3,900 for the Abitibi and Newfoundland field trip, including over CAD$2,400 from the SEG Stewart R. Wallace fund and $1500 from the GAC MDD Tom Lane Student Field Trip Award. The money will be used to cover accommodation and transport for students for the planned field trips.

A fundraising committee of several students will be started in 2021-2022 and they will approach academic and industry sponsors, organize donations, raffles, sales and other events in order to raise funds for the Newfoundland trip.
