Diversos son los monasterios y ermitas en los que se forjan estas leyendas con el fin de atraer peregrinos. Nosotros hemos recogido en este artículo aquellos que aparecen en las Cantigas de santa María de Alfonso X el Sabio y que tienen su origen en la ermita de Salas. PALABRAS CLAVE: Cuentos marianos. Cantigas de santa María. Alfonso X el Sabio. Ermi- ta de Salas. ABSTRACT: The compilations of Marian tales form an important part of mediaeval lite- rature. There are several monasteries and hermitages where these legends are forged in order to attract pilgrims. In this article, we have compiled those that appear in the Cantigas de santa María by Alfonso X el Sabio (Alphonse X, the Wise) and that originate in the hermitage of Salas. KEYWORDS: Marian tales. Nombreux sont les monastères et les ermitages que ces légendes évoquent dans le but d’attirer les pèlerins. ISSN 0214-7602 9 Alazet nº 19 30/3/10 12:41 Página 10 AGUSTÍN FARO FORTEZA Las Cantigas de santa María es un cancionero marial que se inscribe dentro de la tradición religiosa de la lírica galaicoportuguesa, pero que por la actitud narrati- va guarda importantes puntos de conexión con la poesía trovadoresca, ya que el poeta —el rey— asume el papel de entendedor —enamorado—, y la Virgen, a quien canta y alaba el trovador, el papel de la dama.1 No hay que olvidar, en este sentido, que la dama de las «cantigas de amor» siempre aparece sublimada y, en nuestra líri- ca peninsular, se presenta como un amor que emana perfección y de imposible materialización física. Se ha asociado la figura del monarca, Alfonso X, al trovador. Sabido es, y hoy en día prácticamente aceptado por todos los estudiosos del tema, que el rey tenía en las obras a él adjudicadas un papel de coordinador. La General estoria aclara con pre- cisión dicho concepto: el Rey faze un libro, non porque él escriba con sus manos, mas compone las razones, e las enmienda, et yegua, e enderesça e muestra la manera de cómo se deben fazer.2 Sin embargo, las Cantigas pueden considerarse diferentes al resto, puesto que es la única obra puramente literaria y la única que no está escrita en castellano.3 Pero una razón más importante aún cabe esgrimir: es la obra más personal porque en ella, especialmente en las cantigas de centena, se ofrecen datos biográficos del monar- ca, tanto físicos como morales.4 Mettmann, por su parte, sostiene que el monarca solo colabora en un mínima parte del total.5 El libro se compone de 420 cantigas, de las que 356 son narrativas y relatan milagros de la Virgen; las restantes son de cantigas de loor. Todas menos una 1 Montoya defiende el título de Cancioneiro marial frente al de Cantigas de Santa María, y aduce que este último se debe a los bibliotecarios de Felipe II.     Spanish Classical Theater in Britain and North America José María Ruano de la Haza n his History of the Theatre in Europe, John Allen begins the five pages allotted to Spanish classical theater by declaring that “the Spanish peo- ple have not on the whole been distinguished for their contribution to European drama” (140). More recently, Oxford University Press pub- Ilished a four-volume history of the American theater from 1869 to 2000 (Bord- man; Hischak), in which, as one would expect, Shakespeare’s presence is perva- sive. The authors also mention with some frequency seventeenth-century French playwrights, especially Molière (thirty-seven occasions), and the Italian Goldoni (nine occasions). By contrast, there is not a single allusion in the 2,000-plus pages of the series to Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, or Calderón. The same pertains to Eric Bentley’s popular What Is Theater? Whatever theater may be, seventeenth- century Spaniards do not seem to have contributed to it, for they do not appear in his book. Nor do they figure in Richard Southern’s The Seven Ages of the The- atre, which deals not only with English, French, and Italian drama, but also Tibetan, Chinese, and Indian. These are not isolated cases of theatrical history’s neglect of Spanish drama. Alfredo Hermenegildo remarks on “la ignorancia casi total que del corpus teatral [del Siglo de Oro] hacen gala, consciente o incon- sciente, los repertorios, tratados y estudios teóricos sobre el fenómeno dramático de la llamada cultura occidental” (5).     Lesson Plan: Life and Society in Golden Age Spain By Raquel Klammer, BYU student Date: 01/21/2008 Objectives: • Students will be able to recognize some important aspects of life and society in Golden Age Spain (such as rules of behavior, clothing, food, entertainment, etc). • Students will be able to understand the difference between their life and that of a person living during Golden Age Spain. • Students will be able to understand how Golden Age Theater reflected the society of Golden Age Spain. Content: • Social hierarchy of Golden Age Spain (15th -17th centuries): At the top was the nobility, followed by the rest of the Spanish populations with the poor and homeless at the bottom. The minorities: Jews, Arabs and gitanos (gypsies), were often regarded with mistrust and discriminated against. People took great pride in having “sangre pura” (pure blood), that is, a purely Spanish ancestry. • Rules of behavior: there were very strict rules of behavior, especially when dealing with nobility. There were specific expressions to be used, according to a person’s social status such as “excelencia” or “vuestra merced”. One was supposed to say “tú” to somebody of a much higher social standing, and “vos” to servants and vassals; kiss a lady’s hand and “pedir los pies” (offer to kiss the feet) of a lord. Honor was a very important value in Golden Age Spain. If a man or woman felt disrespected (for example, somebody did not treat them according to their social status), this could lead to duels and other things. • Clothing: people dressed according to their social status.
