Murray, Commissioner Resource Management Plans provide guidance for managing properties under the stewardship of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). They are intended to be working documents for setting priorities, enabling the Department to adapt to changing fiscal, social and environmental conditions. The planning process provides a forum for communication and cooperation with park visitors and the surrounding communities to ensure transparency in the DCR’s stewardship efforts. As I travel the Commonwealth, I am reminded of the variety of high-quality experiences offered by DCR parks. Those within the Mount Holyoke Range Planning Unit are among the best that this state has to offer. They provide a variety of recreational opportunities, from challenging hikes along mountain ridgelines, to family picnics on a promontory overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, to taking in a summer concert in downtown Holyoke. Although they may all be visited in a single day, the true character of these parks is best revealed through repeat visits. In addition to providing outstanding recreational opportunities, these parks protect important natural and cultural resources. -

Massachusetts House of Representatives: Upgrading Greater Boston MBTA Rail System St. John’s Preparatory School - Danvers, Massachusetts - December 2020 Letter from the Chairs Dear Delegates, My name is Brett Butler. I am a Senior at St. John’s Prep, and I will serve as your chair for the Massachusetts House of Representatives on Railway Service. I have been involved in Model UN at the Prep for 5 years. Outside of Model UN, I am on the SJP Tennis Team, an Eagles’ Wings Leader, a member of Spire Society, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Chinese National Honor Society. The topic of Railway Service has really fascinated me, since my father is an executive in the FTA (Federal Transit Administration), which is part of the DOT (Department of Transportation), and he has been my inspiration for my research into this topic. Also, I am a frequent passenger on the “T” and Commuter Rail (as well as commuter rail and subway services in many different cities such as Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Montreal). Thus, I recommend that you read through this paper as well as to do your own research on the frequency, extension, and public trust in the Greater Boston Railway Service. Massachusetts Coastal Zone Boundary Description The following is the specification of the major roads, rail lines, other visible rights-of-way, or coordinates marking the inland boundary of the coastal zone. For consistency, the actual boundary is 100 feet inland of the landward side of this line, with the exception of municipal boundaries, where the municipal boundary is the limit of the line. This boundary narrative is organized into the following sections: Salisbury to western Gloucester, Eastern Gloucester and Rockport, Manchester- by-the-Sea to Saugus, Revere to Hingham, Weymouth to Plymouth, Cape Cod and the Islands, Wareham to Westport, and Mount Hope Bay. Tillitson, 1955. Special Notes One very useful feature of the material is further described in the two attached pages. This is the carefully annotated study of a good many of the important large railroads of the United States complete within their own files, these to be found within the official state of incorporation. Here will be included page references to the frequently huge number of small short-line roads that usually wound up by being “taken in” to the larger and expending Class II and I roads. Some of these files, such as the New York Central or the Pennsylvania Railroad are very big themselves. Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Washington are large because the many lumber railroads have been extensively studied out. -

Massachusetts Route 128, to Determine the Relationship Between Roadway Economic Development and Development of the Road
MASSACHUSETIS ROUTE 128: A NONEMULATIVE ENIGMA Don Levitan, Center for Public Management, Suffolk University The objective of this paper is to examine the history of one of the first urban circumferential highways, Massachusetts Route 128, to determine the relationship between roadway economic development and development of the road. This economic development has long been thought to be directly related to the advent of the roadway. Therefore, many people have felt that similar economic attributes would follow construction of a similar roadway in an urban area. The results of this research tend to obviate that concept. The research covered the years 1925 through 1965 because initial construction occurred around 192 5 and "completion" and widening (in several locations) had occurred by 1965. Furthermore, by 1965 substantial economic development had taken place along the highway. The results of this investigation indicated that the initial economic develop ment along the roadway may be ascribed to previous events (antecedent development) and as such was a continuation of earlier processes. Thus the possibility exists that this initial economic development would have occurred without the construction of the road. Economic development as sociated with this roadway was concluded to be part of the developmental forces operating in the Boston urban area rather than as a benefit from the roadway itself. •MASSACHUSETTS Route 128 is a limited-access circumferential highway encircling the Boston metropolitan area. When originally conceived, it was not considered a factor in the economic growth of the metropolitan area; its initial function was to link suburban communities while bypassing Boston proper. The purpose of this paper is to examine the history o! this roadway and in so doing to show that the economic development of the roadway did not follow any grand plan but was a fortuitous product of the general pattern of urban development. -

Collection number: MS 201 ABSTRACT The Holyoke Collection reflects the diverse history of this immigrant, industrial city. While the collection has only a small amount of personal papers, there is much that documents the city’s rich ethnic communities, their social lives as well as their work lives. The records of numerous clubs and businesses as well as hundreds of photographs tell the story of the city and its people, especially from the 1870s through the 1950s. From the Rand family account book of 1794 to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Souvenir books of the 1970s, the history of the city of Holyoke and its people is well documented by this collection. Terms of Access and Use: The collection is open for research. HISTORICAL SKETCH Holyoke was founded on 19th century water power technology, and populated by immigrants from its beginnings in 1847. Before Europeans arrived, Native Americans depended on the river. The river served for centuries as a natural and generally peaceful boundary between Algonquin peoples on the east side and Iroquois tribes, such as Mohawks, to the west. The Iroquois nation had expanded to the north from the southern Appalachians, home of the Iroquois‐ related Cherokee Indians. Colonial explorers travelled up the river into this area from Hartford, Connecticut in 1640, soon after English Puritans founded Boston. Elizur Holyoke and Roland Thomas led surveys of Springfieldʹs boundaries, which then extended to Hadley and Northampton on both sides of the river. The first European settlers were fur traders and planters. -
