Just five years out of West Point, he spent those years as a second lieutenant in the Sixth Cavalry in New Mexico, South Dakota and at Fort Niobrara, Nebraska. At the University from 1891 to 1895, he found the experience valuable, but he had a profound influence on the cadets as well.
