While he’s often fighting valiantly to win the love of someone else, here, rather, he’s struggling through a long battle to self-love.” - Paste Magazine American Songwriter dissects Bendigo Fletcher’s “Evergreen” “Evergreens symbolize longevity, immortality and continued renewal, a fitting metaphor for Kentucky rockers Bendigo Fletcher. The past several years saw the band shift members, sign to a larger label and craft a new piece of work reflecting their new chapter. “Evergreen,” the first single from the band’s upcoming collection of work meanders through the madness of the world and the constant reconditioning required to survive it all. Following up the band’s 2019 EP Memory Fever, “Evergreen,” the first single off their upcoming project, produced by Wilco and Uncle Tupelo drummer Ken Coomer, fuses a denser psych-rock with some remaining elements of Bendigo Fletcher’s drifting folk-Americana roots. Originally written in 2015, “Evergreen” nar- rates all the band’s journey throughout this time through the present, including their recent signing to Elektra Records. “The band has gone through a journey to make it sound like it sounds, but I think the feeling around when that song was cre- ated applies now more than ever in a new context,” says singer Ryan Anderson. “Looking back and taking it into context now, I wrote the song in a time of great, personal uncertainty. I was out of college and studying for the MCAT tests for medical school, but at the same time, was coming to terms with the reality that I’ve never been able to sit down and read a book for more than 10 minutes. I have an active mind that just needs to be moving all the time.” In some form of self-preservation, Anderson embraced yoga, long walks, and studying architecture to help put his mind at ease, and stimulated. “It eases anxiety and lets you imagine and dream and appreciate where all those structures come from,” says Anderson. “The song touches on self preservation for the common good. I’ve started to realize that I can start to act more truthfully with myself and pay attention to when I feel a strong sense of truth, versus following a more conventional path that I thought was laid before me—like medical school.” “Evergreen” also marks a new pattern of songwriting for Anderson. “I’ve always been comfortable and open with new pro- cesses and never sticking to any kind of paradigm for how songs should be written for myself,” says Anderson. “Now, the subject matter is a lot more personal. I think those feelings of admitting truth and feeling empathy for myself helped me to draw out some of my struggles and some of the feelings.” Musically, the band worked with a producer for the first time, and enlisted Coomer, a big influence for Anderson. “He can re- ally help to draw out a really epic soundscape,” says Anderson. Now more than a year since the band’s last live show, Bendigo Fletcher are in a new place with Elektra and as a lineup, con- sisting of Anderson, along with lead guitarist and backing vocalist Andrew Shupert, Evan Wagner (backing vocals, keys, guitar, auxiliary percussion), bassist Conner Powell, and drummer Chris Weis. “We’re putting our focus into making music just like we always have,” says Anderson. “This break has given us a chance to re- ally value just making music to keep the train rolling, so it’s been bursts of creativity with different subject matter.” Anderson adds, “I think for me, it was like getting in touch with myself, for the first time in a lot of ways, drawing boundaries between what I think other people’s expectations of me are and stop wasting time and just do it.

NO BALLAD, NO CRY dele began writing new material for her follow- up record in April 2009. But not before she agreed to take a fl yer as an actress with a guest shot on the hit tele vi- sion sitcom Ugly Betty. It seemed like a harm- Aless diversion from all the drama and pressure in her life. She reasoned, how hard could it be to play herself? In the episode, Betty is dancing with her husband at their wedding when the couple is suddenly interrupted by Adele. Th ere is some harmless banter and the next thing we know Adele is up on stage singing the song “Right As Rain.” Adele realized that that kind of promotion in America was well worth the eff ort, but would later acknowledge in Vogue that the Ugly Betty experience cured her of any future acting aspirations. “I can’t watch it. I was so uncomfortable. I am the worst actress of all time.” But Adele was thankful for the momentary respite from Marc Shapiro her day job as singer-songwriter on the rise.

Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Students will examine the causes and effects of the Outlaw movement through analysis of art, music, video, and nonfiction texts. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time.

Gautier detective's passion writing, singing songs | gulflive.com http://blog.gulflive.com/mississippi-press-living//print.html Gautier detective's passion writing, singing songs By Kevin Saucier June 01, 2010, 5:11AM Gautier Police Detective Matt Hoggatt plays his music at The Shed Barbeque and Blues Joint PASCAGOULA - When Detective Matt Hoggatt of the Gautier Police Department is not doing police work or hanging out with his family, he is actively pursuing his passion: songwriting. Hoggatt started playing guitar and writing songs in 2005, but that was not his first foray into music. Hoggatt has been a musician since he started playing trumpet in seventh grade at Gautier Middle School. He continued to play trumpet in the marching band at Pascagoula High School, and then he picked up the baritone at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He later served in the Mississippi National Guard for seven years, playing trumpet and baritone in the National Guard band. "They say if you join the military you get to see the world," Hoggatt said. "If you join the National Guard you get to see the state. So I went everywhere in Mississippi you can possibly go, all the way up to the north, south, east and west, and pretty much once a month we'd play a gig somewhere. We were in all kinds of parades, festivals, fishing rodeos, you name it." Though none of his songs have been purchased, Hoggatt won a contest held by American Songwriter Magazine with a song he wrote called "21 at Normandy," and he was rewarded with a full-page interview.

Toronto-based rock band Zeus have been racking up acclaim for their third album, Busting Visions . Esquire went as far as to say they’re “as fun as 21st century classic rock gets.” We asked Carlin Nicholson and Neil Quin about Busting Visions, their all-powerful band name, their approach to songwriting and more. Carlin Nicholson: What’s the story behind the band name? We had recorded many songs before we even really knew we were a band. A friend of ours – Peter Elkas – asked us if we’d like to play a show with him. We had no name. Mike stammered his way to Zeus and so it was. We would make reference to many silly things through word games in the studio as in: “Sounds like juice, sounds like Zeus’ juices…sounds like ZEUS.” How does the songwriting process work in the band? It’s a bit different for every dude how the song actually comes in, what stage it’s in at that time, etc.

  • If You Want to Know How to Cure a Hangover, Ask a Musician, Especially One Who Has Recently Been in Rehab
If you want to know how to cure a hangover, ask a musician, especially one who has recently been in rehab. “Pedialyte, that’s what you need,” Jason Isbell told me. He was standing outside a recording studio in suburban Nashville, lighting a cigarette. “It’s the stuff you give kids who are dehydrated from diarrhea. It’s like 10 Gatorades in one bottle.” Isbell is big and gregarious — he’s 6-1, 200 pounds — with wary, deep-set blue eyes that flash and size you up at the same time. On this early afternoon in February, those eyes were puffy and red-rimmed. He had only three days to finish “Southeastern,” his new album. He had four days until his wedding. Like Ray Liotta in the third act of “Goodfellas,” he was manic and barely sleeping. “Coffee and adrenaline,” he said. “They’ll see me through.” In the old days, this kind of stress would have sent Isbell, who is 34, into a tailspin. He found fame early and wasn’t ready for it. When he was 22, he joined the Drive-By Truckers, the brilliant and hard-living Alabama band. He quickly wrote several of the group’s signature songs, including the title cut of its 2003 album, “Decoration Day,” and a beautiful bummer of a tune called “Goddamn Lonely Love.” He almost as quickly burned out. His first marriage, to Shonna Tucker, the band’s bassist at the time, came unstitched in public. There were some ugly scenes. Isbell’s fondness for Jack Daniel’s did not become him.
