ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Bloomington, IN., Shelbyville, IN., Indianapolis, Detroit, Las Vegas, Northbrook, IL., Urbandale, IA., Chagrin Falls, OH., Buffalo, St. Louis, MO. Band Members: Ryan Ahlwardt, Walter Chase, Jerome Collins, Seggie Isho, Michael Luginbill, Charlie Mechling, Don Nottingham, David Roberts, Randy Stine, Tyler Trepp

If the phrase "male a cappella group" conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. As original member Randy Stine comments, "We take the music very seriously; we just don't take ourselves too seriously." In the process, they are reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop landscape.

WITH A TWIST marked Straight No Chaser's first full-length departure from holiday music, and marked the group's highest debut on the Billboard 200 to date, at #29. Christmas, however, has been good for SNC. The group's 2008 debut, HOLIDAY SPIRITS, hit No. 4 on Billboard's Top Holiday Albums chart and spent two weeks in the No. 1 slot on Amazon and five days atop the iTunes sales chart. Its version of "The 12 Days of Christmas," which incorporates Toto's "Africa," went Top 5 on the Adult Contemporary chart and was Top 10 on the Christmas radio chart. The subsequent CHRISTMAS CHEERS in 2009 was No. 6 Top Holiday Albums and rolled into the Billboard 200 at No. 38, while "The Christmas Can-Can" kicked its way to No. 18 on the Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.

The group originally came together in the fall of 1996 at IU, basically as "10 guys who happened to be good friends who also liked to sing." Choosing the members carefully for personality as well as vocal talent -- Stine, Mechling, Jerome Collins, David Roberts and Walter Chase remain from the original lineup -- SNC set itself apart from other a cappella groups with its contemporary repertoire and dynamic approach, quickly headlining both in Bloomington and on road dates. SNC recorded three independent albums, and even invited the group to his home for a private performance.

When the founders began graduating in 1999 and went on to jobs mostly outside of music, they chose replacements and established SNC as an ongoing group on campus with future generations of ambitious IU undergrads. More than 50 members have passed through the group's ranks so far. Such was the impact SNC made at IU that the school hosted a 10th anniversary reunion show for the original lineup in 2006, and when Stine posted clips from a 1998 on YouTube, SNC's fan base grew exponentially. In 2007 alone, the group's version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" was viewed more than seven million times. Today that number has surpassed 11 million, and the group's cumulative YouTube views clock in at more than 25 million.

Among those viewers was Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman, who found SNC's music "brilliant, fresh and totally compelling." Kallman e-mailed Stine, who initially thought it was a prank but thought otherwise when he was whisked to Los Angeles to meet with the label chief. A few days later, the entire group was in to sign its recording deal. The current incarnation of SNC includes later members of the group, including Michael Luginbill, Ryan Ahlwardt, Seggie Isho, Don Nottingham, and Tyler Trepp. "A music career was definitely not on my radar; getting the guys back together, not just for someone's wedding or bachelor party, but to spend the majority of the year together touring and recording, is a dream come true." Stine says. "I pinch myself all the time and hope it continues and becomes a longstanding career."

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Folk Producers: Jerry Boys Radio Formats: AAA, Non-comm, College, Americana Focus Markets: New York, NY; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; SF-Oakland-San Jose, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Washington, DC; Minneapolis-St. Paul MN; Seattle-Tacoma, WA; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, OR Description: Nonesuch Records releases Sam Amidon's label debutBright Sunny South on May 14. Produced by Amidon with his childhood friend and longtime collaborator Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. ) and legendary English engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Vashti Bunyan, R.E.M.) and recorded in , the record features a band made up of Bartlett and multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily and Chris Vatalaro. Jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler also makes a cameo. Amidon himself not only sings but also plays , , acoustic , and piano on the album.

Amidon describes Bright Sunny South as a "a lonesome record" and a return to the more spare sound of his 2007 self-recorded debut, But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted: "There was an atmospheric quality to my last two records; those albums are like a garden of sounds," says Amidon, "but this one is more of a journey, a winding path. The band comes rushing in and then they disappear. It comes from more of a darker, internal space."

A longtime admirer of Boys' work, Amidon was particularly enamored of his recordings with Martin Carthy in the 1970's, as well as the Ali Farka Touré/Toumani Diabaté duet albums on World Circuit/Nonesuch: "Those are so beautiful. I listened to all of that. I loved the sense of documentation, the unadorned quality. Everything sounded so clear."

ARTIST & INFO "It's official. Sam Amidon has burnt everything to the ground. It smells good, now that the rain has come. I can see the tips of blades rising." Justin Vernon ()

"Very little of Amidon's material is ‘original': a folk singer in the traditional sense, what he does is craft old songs in new ways...His originality impresses throughout...it is startling, moving stuff." Guardian (UK)

The -born and raised, London-based Sam Amidon is known for his reworking of traditional melodies into a new form. In addition to country ballads and shape-note hymns, Bright Sunny South features interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs, including Tim McGraw's "My Old Friend" and 's "Shake It Off." The record also includes a version of "Weeping Mary," a shape-note hymn that his parents, Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, had recorded with the Vermont-based Word of Mouth Chorus for Nonesuch Records on the 1977 disc Rivers of Delight: American Folk Hymns From the Sacred Harp Tradition.

Bright Sunny South follows 2010's critically acclaimed , which earned Amidon praise from SPIN for his "quirky alchemy...contrasting pretty sounds with violent lyrical undercurrents" and , which said, "[Amidon's] interpretations are so singular that it stops mattering how (or if) they existed before."

Prior to I See the Sign, which was released on the -based label , Amidon released But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted (Plug Research, 2007) and All Is Well (Bedroom Community, 2008). ALBUM FACTS Genre: Rock Description: With the explosive first single "Bruane Brenn" to the slowed down guitar crunching of "Evig Vandrar" to the brutally chaotic "Nekrokosmos," Meir is an album that certainly lives up to the hype of giving the listener "more." Tight WEBSITES: rhythms, inventive guitar hooks and melodies that seep into your consciousness, this is an album that constantly surprises. Facebook Twitter ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Stavanger, Band Members: Kvelertak is Erlend Hjelvik (vocals), Vidar Landa (), Bjarte Lund Rolland (guitars), Maciek Ofstad (guitars), Marvin Nygaard (bass), Kjetil Gjermundrød (drums)

They're called punk and metal, but at their hearts Norwegian berserkers Kvelertak are the living, firebreathing embodiment of . Since their formation in 2006, they've built a die-hard fan-base hungry for their utterly ferocious live shows that have already burned two flaming tire-tracks across the globe.

"Buzzworthy" doesn't even begin to describe Kvelertak, and their roll-call of achievements reads like a legend waiting to happen. Their rapturously-received self-titled 2011 debut - produced by none other than Converge's Kurt Ballou - was termed "the best Norwegian debut of all time" by Norwegian rock authority Asbjørn Slettemark, "Best Debut Album" by Metal Hammer Germany, "Best New Artist" and "Best Rock Album" at the (Norway's Grammy equivalent), and iTunes US's Metal Breakthrough Artist of The Year in 2011. Along with unanimous praise from Metal Hammer UK, Terrorizer, Rock Hard, and Kerrang! who called them "the most exciting new band on the planet," Kvelertak - or "chokehold" in English- are showing no signs of slowing down.

From storming 2011's SXSW festival to being personally invited by Mastodon to support them in Bergen, Norway, to Dave Grohl presenting them with their first gold discs at a sold-out Foo Fighter's show, this Scandinavian sextet have already circled the globe, hitting every fest from the UK to Australia, including a gig in that finished out on the street, stopping traffic and ending up as a viral hit on YouTube.

At the core of it, though, is the music - a brew of rock, punk and metal so infectious it should carry a warning label. Look out, world, because their second album, Meir, is on its way.

"It's like the first one, but way more in every way," says six-stringer Bjarte Lund Rolland. "The big songs are bigger, the harder songs are harder, the poppy songs are poppier, and..."

"This is going to blow your brains out," adds singer Erlend Hjelvik, whose riot-inducing vocals may be in Norwegian, but they speak a language of badass bravado like no other. "The first one was pretty much all party; this time around it's the hangover where you go round two and start drinking again the day after. You get drunk real quick and you're generally in a weird fuck-you-all-mood. It's known as the shampoo-effect."

Call it the shampoo-effect, or one of the most uproarious displays of recorded lunacy of the 21st century, but these Stavanger natives are set to take on the world. Think stunning guitar-leads that recall the heady days of Guns N' Roses tempered with the down-stroked muscularity of , with the party-vibes of a rockabilly hoedown, Kvelertak are nothing short of a fjord fiesta.

"The most important thing is that it's just as fucking shameless as the first one," says Bjarte. If not more. "I'm really excited about it."

We are too, Bjarte. We are, too.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Rock Description:

To celebrate the landmark album’s 25-year anniversary, Rhino is releasing a two-disc deluxe edition that features the remastered original album accompanied by a disc of live performances taken from the penultimate show of R.E.M.’s 130-date Green World Tour. All 21 songs were recorded in Greensboro, on November 10, 1989, just miles from where , , and had their very first recording session at Mitch Easter’s -In Studio in Winston-Salem.

The anniversary set is packaged in a hard clamshell box (similar to previous R.E.M. reissues) and comes with four postcards and a foldout poster, plus insightful liner notes by Uncut editor, Allan Jones.

Rhino is also releasing the remastered album with original art and packaging on 180-gram vinyl.

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Athens, GA Band Members: Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into . When their first single, "Radio Free ," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern. Throughout the '80s, they worked relentlessly, releasing records every year and touring constantly, playing both theaters and backwoods dives. Along the way, they inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom. MARKETING POINTS Awards: GREEN is certified double platinum Press & Publicity: Great initial press pickup from Roling Stone, USA Today, Pitchfork, Spin, & Consequence Of Sound. Info:

In anticipation of the anniversary set, Rhino will release a limited edition, five-track EP as part of Record Store Day featuring a handful of performances from the Greensboro show that, due to space constraints, are not found on the Deluxe Edition. Limited to 2,500 copies, the disc comes with an original (non-reproduction) patch from the Green Tour.

Comprehensive marketing plan coming soon.
