Decide on a basis to describe our molecule 2. Assign the point group of the molecule in question 3. Generate a reducible representation of our basis 4. Generate irreducible representations form the reducible representation 5. Examine the irreducible representations in terms of the molecular properties Molecular vibrations A basis to describe vibrations Molecular vibrations: the relative motion of atoms with respect to one another These vibrations are an energy state of the molecule We should be able to use group theory to figure out which vibrations the molecule can actually have. 1 Step 1. We use displacement coordinates. Step 2. The water molecule is C2v point group. Step 3. Introduction Chemists often classify chemical compounds into one of two broad categories. The first category is molecular compounds, and the second category is ionic compounds. Molecular compounds consist of atoms that are held together by covalent bonds. Ionic compounds, in contrast, are composed of positive and negative ions that are joined by ionic bonds. Covalent bonds are formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. An ionic bond is formed when one or more electrons from one atom are transferred to another atom. The transfer of one or more electrons from one atom to another results in the formation of a positive ion and a negative ion. The ions then attract each other because they have opposite electrical charges. The term electronegativity refers to a measure of an atom’s tendency to attract electrons from other atoms. Atom electronegativity affects the nature or the character of the bond that will form between two atoms. The electronegativity of atoms also affects the electrical charge of a molecular compound. In some molecules, the electronegativity of the atoms that make up the molecule results in one side of the molecule having a partial negative electrical charge and the other side having a partial positive charge. When this happens, the molecule is described as being polar. Water is an example of a polar molecule because the oxygen side of the molecule has a partial negative charge and the hydrogen side of the molecule has a partial positive charge.

Kanigher revamped the character in 1958 to fit a more cosy post-Wertham storyline where she lived a fantasy existence on Paradise Island. The images, drawn mainly by Ross Andru and Mike Esposito softened Wonder Woman's image from a warrior woman to a teen romance heroine with a doe-eyes and full lips. Instead of warrior boots she wore Greek sandals tied up with straps around her legs. Kanigher also introduced more stories of life on Paradise Island and they must have been popular with readers because they featured in sixteen out of the twenty-three issues in this era. Also Wonder Woman appeared in the top thirty best selling comics with a readership of over 200,000.1 The demands by readers for more of these stories in letters pages and within the storylines themselves, demonstrate they must have hailed, some aspects of readers' lives in Cold War America. Yet despite her popularity, this era is one of the most overlooked in Wonder Woman scholarship, possibly because the stories were regarded as fairytales told to a teenage female readership. Yet this era throws up some fascinating cultural paradoxes. Wonder Woman posed a problem in 1950s and '60s because she challenged the perceived role of women as reliant on men in family life and the job market.

    Rebooting the Academy: Why Universities Need to Finally Start Taking Comic Books Seriously Gian Pagnucci and Alex Romagnoli Has the age of the comic book dawned at last? Comic book su- perheroes dominate movie theatres across the land. The Walking Dead scares millions on television, while others tune in to Gotham. Clothing stores are filled with t-shirts bearing Superman’s “S” and the Bat symbol. And bookstores now hold large graphic novel sec- tions, while comic book style novels like Captain Underpants (Pilkey, 1997) and The Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Kinney, 2007) are best sellers. Yet for all the excitement that comic books and comic book based ideas have generated in popular culture, there still remains skepti- cism about the scholarly value of studying comic books and graphic novels. If a person searches hard enough, it is possible to find a course about comic books here or there or a graphic novel on a few required course reading lists. A few departments have comics studies scholars laboring away in them, and there are more books and arti- cles about comic books and graphic novels now being published by academic presses. Yet job ads asking for knowledge of the comics studies field are rare, and the most prestigious academic journals contain few articles that discuss comic books and graphic novels. This means comics studies scholars are forever having to defend the genre they find so compelling. Every comics studies scholar knows how frustrating it is to always have to face the eyebrow rais- ing, snickering, questioning, and “Ohhh, you’re studying those things” comments from colleagues, administrators, and students.
