Jackson HomeChurch Bible Training [email protected] EXL-21 02/23/2021 “IN AWE”- PT2 Rev 4:2-11 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, 6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” 9 And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” IN AWE OF THE FOUR LIVING CREATURES John spends more words trying to describe these creatures than on anything else in the scene. It must have been a spectacular and marvelous thing to experience. REV 4:6B-11 And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” LIVING CREATURES… • Living Creatures… - Zoon – From “Zoe” – Living Ones / Things / NOT Beasts (Therion) – NO OTHER WORDS for them… o John had NO other words FOR them… o Appear to be the “Cherubim” EZEK 1:5-6 KERUB / KERUBIM - A masculine noun of uncertain derivation meaning an angelic being. It is commonly translated as “cherub / cherubim”. EZEKIEL 10] The Bible portrays cherubim as: § Guardians of the GARDEN OF EDEN (GEN. 3:24) and seemingly the GLORY OF THE LORD (CF. EZEK. 10:3, 4, 18-20) § Flanking the THRONE OF GOD (PS. 99:1; CF. ISA. 37:16; references to the MERCY SEAT in the TABERNACLE (NUM. 7:89) § Embroidered images on the tapestry of the TABERNACLE (EX. 26:1, 31) § “HAMMERED” images arching above the MERCY SEAT on the ARK OF THE COVENANT (EX. 25:18-20, 22; 1 KGS 6:23-28; 2 CHR. 3:10-13) § Figuratively, the word is used to describe “God’s winged transport” (2 SAM. 22:11; PS. 18:10) § Interestingly, SATAN is described as being THE ANOINTED CHERUB (EZEK. 28:14) before he was cast out of heaven. Current pictures of cherubim as chubby infants with wings or as feminine creatures find no scriptural basis. EZEK 1:5-6 And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had a human likeness, 6 but each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had a [Human-Cherub**] face. The four had the face of a LION on the right side, the four had the face of an OX on the left side, and the four had the face of an EAGLE. EZEK 10:9-14 And I looked, and behold, there were four wheels beside the cherubim, one beside each cherub, and the appearance of the wheels was like sparkling beryl. 10 And as for their appearance, the four had the same likeness, as if a wheel were within a wheel. 11 When they went, they went in any of their four directions without turning as they went, but in whatever direction the front wheel faced, the others followed without turning as they went. 12 And their whole body, their rims, and their spokes, their wings, and the wheels were full of eyes all around—the wheels that the four of them had. 13 As for the wheels, they were called in my hearing “the whirling wheels.” 14 And each one had four faces: the first face was the face of the Cherub, and the second face was a Human face, and the third the face of a Lion, and the fourth the face of an Eagle. ** He does NOT use the word for “ox / calf” here, but “Kerub” NOTICE there are only “3” – The face of the “OX” is presented as looking from the front where he could see the 2-faces on the R&L, and THROUGH to the face of the Eagle behind – It was a “living creature” – a Kerub EX 25:18-20 And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end. Of one piece with the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. 20 The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be. EX 26:1 “Moreover, you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarns; you shall make them with cherubim skillfully worked into them. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. • On each Side of the Throne… – One at each side – EACH ONE Facing inward / outward / left / right • With Six wings…- Like ISA 6:2, not like EZE 1:6, where only four wings are given apiece – It would seem that in Ezekiel’s vision “2” of the wings may have been obscured by the fact of the movement and activity of the creatures "Each had six wings: with twain he covered his face [in reverence, as not presuming to lift up his face to God], with twain he covered his feet (in humility, as not worthy to stand in God's holy presence), and with twain he did fly [in obedient readiness to do instantly God's command]." • FULL of Eyes… - (mentioned twice) – Eyes on each of the faces?? Eyes that seemed as they covered them??     PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT The Truth About Angels by Donald L. Deffner I grew up during the Great Depression in the early 1930s. My father was a minister. Behind our small home was a dirt alley which led nine blocks to downtown Wichita, Kansas. I can remember when I was a boy the hungry, destitute men who came to the back door begging for food. My mother never turned them down. She shared what little we had, even if only a couple of pieces of bread and a glass of milk. My mother didn’t just say, “Depart in peace! I’ll pray for you! Keep warm and well fed!” (See James 2:16.) No. She acted. She gave. Often I was curious about these mysterious and somewhat scary men. I had a sense that they were “different” than I was, not worse, not better, just different. I always watched these strangers heading back up the alley toward downtown, and sometimes, in a cops-and-robbers fashion, I secretly followed them, jumping behind bushes so I wouldn’t be seen. I think I half expected them to suddenly disappear. After all, my Sunday school teacher, encouraging us to be kind and care for strangers, told us the Bible says that, by doing so, many people have entertained angels without knowing it (see Hebrews 13:2). I never saw any of the men disappear. They were ordinary, hungry human beings. But my Sunday school teacher was right. God does send His angels to us, and they do interact with us—not just to test us and see if we are kind, but to protect us and guide us.

Although the Bible doesn’t describe in detail the hierarchy within the angelic realm, enough evidence exists to show that some organization exists Classification 1. Archangel – the highest ranking angel Michael is the only angel designated archangel and may possibly be the only one of this rank His name means “who is like God?” Apparently, Michael is one of the chief princes (see #2 below) As the chief angel of God, he especially watches over Israel (Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1) and leads the holy angels (Revelation 12:7) Jude 9~ But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil 1 Thessalonians 4:16 ~ For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 2.     Christian Angelology Angelology Introduction Why study Angels? They teach us about God As part of God’s creation, to study them is to study why God created the way he did. In looking at angels we can see God’s designs for his creation, which tells us something about God himself. They teach us about ourselves We share many similar qualities to the angels. We also have several differences due to them being spiritual beings. In looking at these similarities and differences we can learn more about the ways God created humanity. In looking at angels we can avoid “angelic fallacies” which attempt to turn men into angels. They are fascinating! Humans tend to be drawn to the supernatural.     Ezekiel Introduction The name Ezekiel means “God strengthen,” or “God is strong.” His ministry as a prophet began in 590 BCE and ended in 570 BCE. His writing was done while he was in captivity in Babylon, writing to the Jews in Jerusalem, in which he described some of the events reported to him during the time of warfare and the fall of Jerusalem. He was a priest and the son of a priest named Buzi. With the Babylonian Captivity he was carried away as a young man, being taken captive along with King Jehoiachin in 598 BCE, a number of years before the destruction of Jerusalem. He lived in Tel-Abib (hill of the storm god) where a Jewish community tried to eke out a living. Tel-Abib was located along the banks of the Chebar. The Chebar is described as a river but actually it was a canal which diverted water toward the north of the Euphrates River. Ezekiel was married but his wife died suddenly just as the siege of Israel began. In the year 593 BCE he experienced a vision somewhere in Mesopotamia during a thunderstorm in which he experienced a call to be a prophet of God. The first portion of the book of Ezekiel deals with his seeking to establish hope on the part of the exiles that they might deal with their captivity in a foreign land. News of the fall of Jerusalem (which took place August 15, 586 BCE) reached Ezekiel on January 8, 585 BCE. After this his message became one that sought to reassure the people that Jerusalem and the temple would again be restored and worship, and living on their part, would return to be as it had been in the past.

An exploration of image relationships within the composition and in relation to the configurations of the support and the conversations the support introduces in painting materially and thematically in particular in terms of time and space. The ‘reveal’ of the box. Handing paint with authority and fluidly, ‘treating the paint as a new guest at the table’, forthright, painterly, graphic, illustrative. Good colour. Relationship of the three images. Reflecting on ways forward - Continue with cardboard, use the cardboard colour, build up from photos, directness of paint application, reconsider the dreamy, embrace drawing/ illustrative/graphic qualities. Consider compositions, explore single image paintings of the portraits hung close together, limit palette. Build up from photographic references. Draw more. Comments: Marcus Big changes! The card board is working very well, it seems to invite so much more in. This is early days to analyse the paintings in any depth or indeed the composition and painting so just enjoy letting the work emerge. Having said that........ I detect that these are about family and the source material is family photos. I love the male figure in the suit! The Dean Martinish figure. There is tons of good colour in this painting , the modelling in loose greys on the pink ground with cardboard fringes showing. This limited range really works well and has something of the nostalgia of old photos without being too restricted to monochrome.

Breznau | 2015 Holy Angels We believe God created an innumerable host of sinless angels to serve and worship Him (Neh. 9:6; Psa. 103:20; Luke 15:10; Eph. 1:21; Heb. 1:14; Rev. 7:12); that because they are merely created beings and not God, they are not to be worshiped (Col. 2:18; Rev. 22:9); that they are spiritual beings possessing great power (Psa. 103:20; 2 Pet. 2:11; 2 Kgs. 19:35; Job 1:6); that they possess moral judgment and intelligence; and that they are a higher order of creation than mankind (Heb. 2:6-10; cf. Phil. 2:5-8). The wood panelled walls, the banister separating spectators from litigants, jurors, lawyers and judge, the armed bailiff – all these impress upon me the seriousness of the courtroom. I have witnessed, firsthand, the power and authority of a judge, robed and seated above all delivering life changing judgments. Almost six hundred years before Christ, Ezekiel lived in times that were remarkable for their declension on just about every level. 2 Chronicles 36:11-16 states the condition of the nation of Israel at the time: 11 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. 12 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke the word of the LORD. 13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him take an oath in God's name. Ezekiel and Jeremiah were contemporaries. Ezekiel was of the priestly line of Levi, but before he could serve as a priest, he along with King Jehoiachin, the upper classes, and many of the leading priests and craftsmen was taken into exile into Babylon, seven hundred miles north of Israel.

    Ezekiel Chapter 10 Ezekiel 10:1 "Then I looked, and, behold, in the firmament that was above the head of the cherubims there appeared over them as it were a sapphire stone, as the appearance of the likeness of a throne." This is Ezekiel speaking. This chapter is a continuation of the vision that Ezekiel had in the last chapter. It is as if one stage is coming into his view at a time. God shows him one setting, and then another. The sapphire, here, is a blue stone, speaking of the heavenlies. Then, this is a vision of the throne in heaven. The throne is like a sapphire shining forth representing God’s Glory and Holiness. Ezekiel 10:2 "And he spake unto the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels, [even] under the cherub, and fill thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims, and scatter [them] over the city. And he went in in my sight." “Fill with coals”: John MacArthur calls this vision with the cherubim and wheels God’s war machine. God specifies that the marking angel reach into the war machine and fill his hands with fiery coals in the presence of the angels (of chapter 1). These coals picture the fires of judgment which God’s angels are to “scatter” on Jerusalem. (In Isaiah 6), coals were used for the purification of the prophet; here they were for the destruction of the wicked. Fire did destroy Jerusalem (in 586 B.C.). Ezekiel 10:3 "Now the cherubims stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in; and the cloud filled the inner court." "The cloud filled the inner court" is speaking of the Shekinah glory of God which filled the court.

    E Z E K I E L —prophet to the exiles in Babylon, early sixth century. Name means “God will strengthen” 1. Date Ezekiel dates his prophecies very frequently, as much or more than any other OT book. There are 14 chronological notices in Ezekiel: 1:1 30th year (of what?) 1:2 5th year of Jehoiachin’s captivity 8:1 6th “ 20:1 7th 24:1 9th 26:1 11th 29:1 10th 29:17 27th 30:20 11th 31:1 11th 32:1 12th 32:17 12th 33:21 12th year of our captivity 40:1 25th “ Jehoiachin’s captivity started in 597 BC; thus these references would span the following: 5th year = 593 BC 27th year = 571 BC Note that many of these prophecies were given during his 11th and 12th years of captivity. That would be 587-586 BC, just during and after the fall and destruction of Jerusalem (cf. 33:21). Ezekiel 1:1 poses a question: the 30th year of what? It could be the 30th year of the Neo-Babylonian empire (about 596 BC, assuming its beginnings under Nabopolassar in 626 BC), the year after Jehoiachin was taken captive, two years before Ezekiel’s call related in chapter 1. Another possibility is that it is Ezekiel’s age at the time of his call (cf. Num. 4:3, and the lives of John the Baptist and of Jesus, Lk. 3:23). The old critical view of C. C. Torrey, Pseudo-Ezekiel and the Original Prophecy (1930), is now generally discarded. Torrey and others denied that Nebuchadnezzar ever did destroy Jerusalem and Judah.
