Currently, there are 13 series and five movies-of-the-week in production. In May 2005, six series, one mini-series, one pilot and one movie-of-the-week were in production. “Globally, we are seeing an increased interest in dramatic television series – and today’s numbers give us reason to be optimistic that 2006 will be a strong year for us as well,” said Ilich. “This is testament to our skilled crews, world-class facilities and innovative measures taken by government and industry to ensure B.C. remains competitive.” “Our creative economy is only as strong as the talent pool within it,” said Ilich. “The film and television industry is a very fluid sector and B.C.’s creative pool is experienced and nimble enough to adjust to new conditions and seize new opportunities.” B.C.’s film and television industry experienced a major turnaround in 2005, reaching $1.233 billion, up from $801 million in 2004. Television production in 2005 included 31 television series, 37 movies-of-the-week, 15 television pilots and five mini-series. Television series currently shooting in B.C. include: Stargate SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, The 440, Masters of Horror and Robson Arms. New series this year include: Blade, Eureka, Kyle XY, Psych, Saved and Three Moons Over Milford.

Poole “It’s Greek to whom?” In 2007-2008, a significant accumulation of cinematic and other visual media took up a celebrated episode of Greek antiquity recounting in different genres and styles the rise of the Spartans against the Persians. Amongst them are the documentary The Last Stand of the 300 (2007, David Padrusch), the film 300 (2007, Zack Snyder), the video game 300: March to Glory (2007, Collision Studios), the short film United 300 (2007, Andy Signore), and the comedy Meet the Spartans (2008, Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer). Specifically, it discusses the emergence of paid labor shows like Ax Men, Black Gold and Coal and a resurgent interest in working bodies at a time when the working class in the US seems all but consigned to the dustbin of history. As an implicit response to the crisis of masculinity during the Great Recession these programs present an imagined revival of manliness through the valorization of muscle work, which can be read in dialectical ways that pivot around the white male body in peril. In Ax Men, Black Gold and Coal, we find not only the return of labor but, moreover, the re-embodiment of value as loggers, roughnecks and miners risk both life and limb to reach company quotas. Paid labor shows, in other words, present a complicated popular pedagogy of late capitalism and the body, one that relies on anachronistic narratives of white masculinity in the workplace to provide an acute critique of expendability of the body and the hardships of physical labor.
