  • THE RIVER WANDLE the River Wandle Flows Through the London Boroughs of Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth Where It Joins the River Thames
WANDLE INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION SHEET supporting KS 1/2 History & Geography: H KS2 - a study of..a site that is significant in the locality Gg KS1 – use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to rivers Gg KS2 – understand key aspects of … rivers THE RIVER WANDLE The River Wandle flows through the London Boroughs of Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth where it joins the River Thames. It’s main sources are from chalk springs along the foothills of the North Downs around the Carshalton and Croydon areas, although several of these are now dried up. The existing spring sources can be found in Carshalton Ponds, Beddington Park, Waddon Ponds and more recently Wandle Park. The river flows for 19 kilometres (12 miles) falling 58 metres (136 feet) over its length. As a result it is fast flowing compared to neighbouring tributaries such as the Graveney, Norbury Brook and the Bourne streams. This made it very attractive to be used to drive water wheels. It is no surprise that in 1805 the Wandle was described as “the hardest worked river for its size in the world” due to the numerous water mills along it. It also had the reputation of being the best trout fishing river in the country, frequently used by Lord Nelson when visiting Merton. The origin of the name of the river is unclear. It is likely that Wandle, and that of Wandsworth, is derived from Saxon “Wendlesworth” meaning “Wendle’s settlement”. The charter of AD 693 called it the hlida burnon or highbourne meaning “loud stream”. The earliest reference to the current name is in 1586.

The Yellow House really drew us in and when we got inside we could see that it was exactly what we wanted. The hardwood timber flooring in the living and dining area as well as the lobby was a real plus straight away but it was the amount of natural light in the living area that quickly caught the eye. Big windows, glass doors into the extension and conservatory type glazing into the back garden. The kitchen is a dream space-wise and the cooker was one of the first things we both mentioned after we viewed the house as we both love to cook. The garden is really spacious and has been great for hosting people and barbecues in the summer. The downstairs toilet off the extension is perfectly located for this too. 3 bedrooms upstairs with 2 large doubles is great. The 3rd is perfect for a single room but also ideal for an office, or in our case, a home gym! We redecorated when we moved in to brighten it up further and add our own stamp on the house. With the space available, the options for furnishing are endless. The house is a short walk to Thornton Heath station, which has very quick links in to Central London as well Croydon and Gatwick airport.

Appendix 5: Air quality monitoring networks Appendix 5: Air quality monitoring networks Greater London has well over 100 air quality monitoring sites that are currently in operation, most of which are owned by local authorities and are part of the London Air Quality Network (LAQN). Defra also has a number of monitoring sites in London, which are part of the UK’s automatic network. Figure A5.1 shows the distribution of these monitoring sites in London. This appendix summarises the different monitoring networks and outlines which monitoring sites have been used for the analysis undertaken in this report, results of which are discussed in sections 8 and 10. • Croydon London Borough
Croydon London Borough Personal Details: Name: Richard Chatterjee E-mail: Postcode: Organisation Name: Comment text: To the Local Government Boundary Commission As a resident since 1992 within the Addiscombe and Shirley Park Residents' Association (ASPRA) area, and who has represented the current Shirley Ward as a councillor since 2002, I hope that the following comments will be useful generally but especially in relation to Addiscombe and Shirley. The 16 'places' of Croydon were arrived at to meet the needs of the communities of Croydon and, just like the histories of Addiscombe referred to below, are objective and not generated for electoral ends; they deserve to be given greater weight than the council's proposals because of that objectivity and even- handedness. Identities If you ask people here where they live, they will give their geographical location, such as Addiscombe, Shirley, Purley, Woodside, South Norwood, Upper Norwood, Sanderstead, West Croydon, and Norbury. Some of those areas are large, such as Addiscombe (which naturally runs eastwards from the line out of E Croydon railway station and is centred on the Lower Addiscombe Road); beyond that, including the Longheath estate, people usually describe themselves as being in Shirley, and contact the Shirley councillors even though they are technically in the artificially construct of 'Ashburton Ward'. Geographic Shirley is greater than the current Shirley Ward, as it really comprises the stretch southwards from the Longheath estate, and to the Shirley Hills (which are also known as the Addington Hills, according to which map is being used). The reasons for these identities is the natural boundaries such as railway lines, the roads that glue the communities together (eg the Lower Addiscombe Road shopping centre has shops on one side and houses on the other that have permanent free parking outside; have bus routes that people from both sides of the road come together to use, and the Addiscombe Tram Stop; and socially cohesive pubs such as The Alma and The Claret).

  • Waddon Ponds M+M Plan (Croydon Council)
WADDON PONDS MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE PLAN 2017 BACKGROUND Waddon Ponds is a 3.09 hectare site situated within a mixed residential, retail and industrial area in London Borough of Croydon (LBC), approximately one mile from the town centre. The site is dominated by a large pond, which due its shape and bridge connections, appears to be three ponds. The park is well used as a place to meet, watch wildfowl, walk the dog, play in the children’s area or use as a shortcut through to the nearby Purley Way. Until 2012, and the deculverting of the river in nearby Wandle Park, this small park offered the only opportunity to see the River Wandle in Croydon. The ecological evaluation for the site was evaluated as ‘Local grade’ in 1997 and again in 2013. On the basis of Field Survey by Thomson Ecology it was recommended that the site met the criteria set out for Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation. The site is managed and maintained by LBC and term contractors for grounds maintenance and facility management. The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) undertake a number of volunteer days at the site each year as per an annual work programme provided by LBC. LWLP Waddon Ponds Management and Maintenance 2017 December 2017 WADDON PONDS AND THE LIVING WANDLE LANDSCAPE PARTNERSHIP PROJECT Croydon Council is a partner in a Heritage Lottery funded scheme to deliver a series of improvement projects along the whole length of the River Wandle, from its sources in Sutton and Croydon, through Merton to Wandsworth where it joins the Thames.
