Welcome to the Forty-Sixth Annual ALASBO Conference!!

I would like to welcome each and every one of you to our annual conference. I am very happy that you could attend. Our conference is filled with pre-conference sessions, keynotes, roundtables, sectionals, a trade show, technology showcase and discussion groups that you will find helpful in your job immediately. As always, do not miss the opportunities for networking with your colleagues during our breakfasts, lunch- eons, and evening events. These include our popular evening receptions hosted by long-time supporters of our conference, BDO and Altman, Rogers & Co., as well as our banquet, ugly sweater contest and ca- sino/karaoke night on Tuesday evening.

I want to say a special thank you to Carl Horn and Amy Lujan for the many hours that they put in preparing for the conference. I would also like to offer a big thanks to everyone who attended Summer Leadership in Nenana/Fairbanks, where the planning for this event began. Please fill out the evaluation after the confer- ence, which guides the planning of the next conference. Also, please consider attending Summer Leader- ship in July to be part of the planning for the 2019 conference!

This year, we are introducing an exciting new training program, the New Business Manager Institute on Saturday, December 1st! We have also added a Technology Showcase on Tuesday, following our one-day full trade show on Monday. We hope these additions to our conference will enhance the opportunities you enjoy at our event.

Please take the time on Monday and during Tuesday’s showcase to visit with your current vendors or meet new ones. Some vendors will also be with us during meals and social events. The support of our vendors is what makes this conference possible. Thanks to all our vendors for your continued support of ALASBO!

I am excited about our keynote addresses each morning during the conference. As is traditional, we have the riveting John Sedor, Esquire, speaking on legal topics on Monday. On Tuesday we will hear from Josh Peach, founder of BeAuSm and Dude Solutions Evangelist, with a message about effective teamwork and getting your job done while living fully at the same time. Finally, Wednesday’s General Session will feature Nick Hanson, “The Eskimo Ninja” featured on American Ninja Warrior, who will share his unique Alaskan Story.

Finally, a big heartfelt thank you to the ALASBO Board and all the ALASBO members for your dedication and hard work! As you look through this program and see the many choices of professional learning op- portunities, please remember that, We’re All In This Together!

Best Regards, Cassee Olin Cassee Olin President of ALASBO

Page 5 ALASBO 2018 P a g e 8 ALASBO Launches New Business Management Institute

ALASBO is pleased to introduce a NEW opportunity for those new to school business (< 3 years) and those aspiring to become business managers (within 1-3 years) in Alaska. Oregon ASBO has successfully used this program for nine years; the New Business Manager Institute (NBMI) is a two-to-three-year program designed to deliver a comprehensive curriculum through a series of in-person and teleconference sessions, instructed by experienced school business practitioners. Applications were received from fourteen ALASBO members. The ALASBO NBMI Year 1 program launched on Saturday, December 1, 2018!

Thank you to the NBMI Work Group members: Amy Lujan, Colleen Fitzgerald, David Means, Dennis Niedermeyer, Holly Holman, Jenny Martens, Melody Douglas, and Robin Mullins, who are reviewing the seven modules included in the NBMI curriculum. Review of the first two NBMI modules to be delivered in year 1 of the program has been completed: Managing Yourself and Managing School Finance. The Work Group will continue reviewing the remaining five modules in the months ahead.

The following ALASBO members have agreed to serve as mentors to the NBMI pro- gram: Robbie McManus, Mark Vink, Yodean Armour, Laura Hylton, Tammy White, Karen Goodwin, Patti Carlson, Cassee Olin, and Karen Quitslund. Thank you! ALASBO needs more mentors, for NBMI and other members; please volunteer to serve your association. Contact Melody Douglas at [email protected] if you are interested in mentoring your colleagues. Mentoring takes only a few hours per month but can be one of the most rewarding activities you’ll engage in as an ex- perienced professional.

ALASBO is able to bring NBMI to its members because of the generous support of Oregon ASBO. Angie Peterman, Executive Director and Vicki Robinson, NBMI Program Manager are at the conference to assist with the December 1, 2018 activi- ties. This support is evidence of collaboration between ASBO affiliates and is greatly valued! Please thank these women for their efforts on behalf of ALASBO members when you meet them. 
