Standard de Liège - AFC Ajax Thursday 8 December 2016 - 21.05CET (21.05 local time) Match press kit Stade Maurice Dufrasne, Liege Match background While Ajax can afford to relax having already won Group G, matchday six opponents Standard Liège face a tense finale as they welcome the Dutch side to Belgium. • Having collected 13 points from their first five games, Ajax have clinched the group and hold a seven-point cushion in the standings. • Standard and Celta Vigo, who finish at bottom team Panathinaikos, both have six points. If Celta and Standard end level on points, they will have an equal head-to-head record and therefore will be split on overall goal difference, then goals scored. Standard currently have a +2 goal difference to Celta's +1, through Celta have scored one more goal. Previous meetings • Kasper Dolberg got the only goal when Ajax beat Standard 1-0 in Amsterdam on matchday two. It was the teams' first competitive meeting. • Standard's record in seven encounters with Dutch opposition is W1 D2 L4 (W1 D1 L1 at home). That lone victory came in the first of those fixtures – 3-1 at home to Feyenoord in the UEFA Cup in November 1973. • Ajax's 15 games against Belgian opponents have ended W9 D2 L4 (W3 D2 L2 in Belgium). Those matches include the 1988 European Cup Winners' Cup final, where they lost 1-0 to Mechelen in Strasbourg. Form guide • Standard are unbeaten in four European home fixtures – two wins followed by two Group G draws. • Standard have progressed in two of their five UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns, but missed the cut in their last two attempts, most recently 2014/15. • After three successful attempts to navigate their UEFA Cup group, Ajax failed to qualify for the first time in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League group stage. They have made amends by advancing this time. Links and trivia • The journey from Amsterdam to Liege is around 200km. • Standard midfielder Eyong Enoh was an Ajax player from 2008–14, the Cameroonian lifting two league championships and a Dutch Cup. The coaches • Aleksandar Janković replaced Yannick Ferrera at the Standard helm in early September. Once assistant to fellow Serb Slavoljub Muslin at several clubs, the 44-year-old has coached Crvena zvezda, Serbia's Under-21s and – in Belgium – Lokeren and Mechelen. • A Dutch title winner as a midfielder with Feyenoord, Peter Bosz returned from Israel to take charge of Ajax in May 2016. Bosz has managed Heracles and Vitesse in the Netherlands, also briefly coaching Maccabi Tel-Aviv in 2016. Chapecoense commemoration Teams taking part in all of the matchday six UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League fixtures will observe a minute's silence to pay respect to the victims of last week's air disaster involving the Chapecoense team and accompanying delegation. The Brazilian club lost most of their players and coaching staff in the accident, which occurred in Colombia, where Chapecoense were due to play the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atlético Nacional. "European football is united in expressing its deepest sympathy to Chapecoense, the Brazilian Football Confederation [CBF], CONMEBOL and the families of all the victims," said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin. "This tragedy has shaken the world of football, and we would like to send our support to all of those affected by it." 4 R.
