The southern ROK forces were not as well for war and quickly. The North Koreans would have probably secured the peninsula if UN forces had not intervened. The US interest in Korea was mostly to keep Japan secure and limit the USSR’s. Initially, UN forces were driven back until they occupied only a small of the peninsula in South Korea. Eventually, the UN forces were able to the tide and almost took control of the entire peninsula until China decided to 1 The Korean Armistice Agreement was between the United Nations Command, the Korean People’s Army for North Korea and the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. The Armistice Agreement supposed to be drafted soon after the Armistice Agreement was signed. However, a peace treaty still has not been reached and North and South Korea are still technically at war. Also, South Korea’s president Rhee never signed the Armistice Agreement because he not accept Korea as being divided. Rhee wanted to completely unify the peninsula but would be unable to do so without the support of the UN forces. Kim Il-Sung also did not want to sign an armistice, to cease. Another provision in the Q3 Armistice was the swapping of prisoners of war.

  • East Asia History Timeline
    5. King Gwanggaeto the great Gwanggaeto the Great (374–413, r. 391–413) was the nineteenth monarch of Goguryeo. His full posthumous name means "Entombed in Gukgangsang, Broad Expander of Domain, Peacemaker, Supreme King", sometimes abbreviated to Hotaewang. His era name is Yeongnak and he is occasionally recorded as Yeongnak Taewang ("Supreme King" or "Emperor" Yeongnak). Gwanggaeto's imperial reign title meant that Goguryeo was on equal standing as an empire with the imperial dynasties in China. Under Gwanggaeto, Goguryeo began a golden age, becoming a powerful empire and one of the great powers in East Asia. Gwanggaeto made enormous advances and conquests into: Western Manchuria against Khitan tribes; Inner Mongolia and the Maritime Province of Russia against numerous nations and tribes; and the Han River valley in central Korea to control over two-thirds of the Korean peninsula. In regard to the Korean peninsula, Gwanggaeto defeated Baekje, the then most powerful of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, in 396, capturing the capital city of Wiryeseong in present-day Seoul. In 399, Silla, the southeastern kingdom of Korea, sought aid from Goguryeo due to incursions by Baekje troops and their Wa allies from the Japanese archipelago. Gwanggaeto dispatched 50,000 expeditionary troops, crushing his enemies and securing Silla as a de facto protectorate; he thus subdued the other Korean kingdoms and achieved a loose unification of the Korean peninsula under Goguryeo. In his western campaigns, he defeated the Xianbei of the Later Yan empire and conquered the Liaodong peninsula, regaining the ancient domain of Gojoseon. Gwanggaeto's accomplishments are recorded on the Gwanggaeto Stele, erected in 414 at the supposed site of his tomb in Ji'an along the present-day China–North Korea border.

  • The Geographical Significance of the Tomb Inside the Kitora Burial Mound in Asuka, Nara Prefecture
The Geographical Significance of the Tomb Inside the Kitora Burial Mound in Asuka, Nara Prefecture Simon Potter Introduction The stone tomb inside the Kitora Burial Mound (キトラ 古 墳 , Kitora Kofun, ca. 700 A.D.) in the southernmost part of the village of Asuka, central Nara prefecture, has been in and out of the news during the last sixteen years and has earned a reputation for being a monument of high culture toward the end of the Asuka Period (538–710) of Japanese history. During the exhibition of its artifacts at the Tokyo National Museum in April and May 2014 (Bunka-cho¯ et al. 2014) there were long queues outside the exhibition hall, and Japanese dignitaries who had viewing sessions were Crown Prince Naruhito and Prime Minister Abe Shinzo¯, evidence on the one hand of the popularity attained through previous and contemporaneous media coverage and, on the other, of the cultural significance at the national level of what was inside the tomb. Other than the notorious mold which invaded the tomb while the archeologi- cal research was being done, most of the attention paid to Kitora has focused on its colorful murals, especially that of Suzaku or Shujaku (朱雀, “Red Bird” among other possible translations), but the tomb also contained a rather impressive star chart on its ceiling, some objects that were buried with the deceased and had not been taken by robbers at an unknown time in the past, and some remains of human bone and teeth. As suggested by many of the monographs listed in the scholarly book prepared for sale during the exhibition in Tokyo and thereafter (Bunka-cho¯ et al.
