There are some good things that can never be taken away from Robert Mugabe. It was the moment I grew up. The album was co-produced by Bobby Colomby. I picked up this book expecting to read about Henry Olonga's cricket journey, and his experiences with the Mugabe regime, but there was far too much evangelical preaching for my liking. In a moment in time I recognised and realised that there are deeper issues to life than entertainment, which is essentially what sport is. So I strapped up Sweat and Treason: My Story ankle and bowled through the pain, taking a few wickets in a rain-affected match but nonetheless impressing the selectors in Sweat and Treason: My Story process. ON CHET BAKER by John Clare _________________________________________________________ [John Clare reviews the album Once Upon a Summertime, recorded in 1977 and released on Artists House label (AH 9411) in 1980. This review appeared in Jazz Magazine in August, 1982.] het Baker is a very different kettle of fish to Thad Jones. If anything, he got too much praise too soon. Yet it cannot be denied that he had something there. A C trumpet sound that was intimate, soft, yet bright at times as fresh yellow paint. A poignant lyrical gift and a pleasing sense of construction, in the tradition of Bix Beiderbecke and Lester Young. He had neither the drive nor the technique to take a rhythm section by the throat and hurl it into greatness — as, for instance Clifford Brown, who was reputed to have been slightly bitter about the attention given Baker. Clifford Brown: he was reputed to have been slightly bitter about the attention given Baker… PHOTO COURTESY PINTEREST 1 Chet Baker needed a completely sympathetic setting, which would sustain his fragile inventions with care. The man himself was fragile: baby faced and pretty as the young Truman Capote, he was pulled down easily by drugs, and has emerged recently from hopeless addiction, a leather-faced, gaunt derelict. At least that is how he looks, but it is obvious from his playing that he has at last got himself under control. Chet Baker: he has emerged recently from hopeless addiction, a leather-faced, gaunt derelict… PHOTO COURTESY PINTEREST I heard a track from this album on the radio before I got my copy, and it took me three guesses before I decided it was Baker playing.

  • Norm to the International Community's Response to the Humanitarian
Application of the ‘Responsibility to Protect’ norm to the International Community’s Response to the Humanitarian Crises in Zimbabwe and Darfur. by Patrick Dzimiri Student Number: 28457600 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree: Doctor Philosophiae (DPhil) International Relations in the Department of Political Sciences at the UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SUPERVISOR: DR YK. SPIES February 2016 DECLARATION I hereby declare that the dissertation submitted for Doctor Philosophiae (DPhil) International Relations at the University of Pretoria, apart from the help of the recognised, is my own work and has not been formerly submitted to another university for a degree. Patrick Dzimiri February 2016. Signature………………………. Date……………………… i ABSTRACT The Responsibility to Protect (RtoP) is an interdisciplinary normative framework that reconceptualises state sovereignty as a responsibility rather than a right. It obliges states to protect their people from humanitarian catastrophe, and in the event of state failure or unwillingness to heed this responsibility, requires of the broader international community to assume the residual duty to protect. When the principles of RtoP were endorsed by world leaders at the United Nations’ 2005 World Summit, it seemed as though the normative regime was gaining currency in international relations. However, the operationalization of RtoP continued to be dogged by controversy and conceptual ambiguity. This prompted UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in January 2009 to appeal to the international community to strengthen the “doctrinal, policy and institutional life” of the norm. This study responds to Ban’s call and seeks to complement efforts of scholars across the world to refine the conceptual parameters of RtoP.

Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. • Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021)
Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here. Please send any additions, corrections or comments to http://gc-pepperadamsblog.blogspot.com/, despite the content of the current blog post.
