iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch (iOS 6) You will need: The Overdrive Media Console App, available through the App store, and an Adobe ID A library card number and pin number An email address Optional: Kindle app Open the App Store on your iOS device and enter 'OverDrive Media Console' in the search box. Tap Search on the keyboard. Tap +Install or +Free next to the Overdrive Media Console icon from either the app details or search results screen, and then “Install app”. When you open the app, you will be prompted to authorize the app with an Adobe ID. If you have an Adobe ID, tap “Sign in” and enter your account information. If you do not, tap “Register at Adobe.com”. If you are creating a new account, tap “Don’t have an Adobe ID?” Fill in the information to create your account. Once your Adobe ID has been created, go back to the Overdrive Media Console App and enter your Adobe ID to authorize the app. Swipe your finger from the left side of the screen towards the middle to add our library: Type in a Nelson County zip code to find our library: Choose any of the three Nelson County Public Library locations: Tap the star next to “Kentucky Libraries Unbound” to save our library on your device. Then tap the words “Kentucky Libraries Unbound” to go to the library’s digital catalog. The Kentucky Libraries Unbound catalog is the place to search for and check out downloadable materials from the library: The buttons listed below are used to navigate the catalog: Menu button: Browse by My account: Overdrive Search category List of current Help checkouts, holds, and wish lists Once you find a book/audiobook to checkout, tap “Borrow” (if a book is checked out, choose “Place a hold” if you want to be notified when it is available). You will then need to tap the arrow to the right of “select library” and choose Nelson County from a list: Sign in to your account with your library card number and pin number: You may then download the book or audiobook. If you are downloading an audiobook, choose the MP3 Audiobook format. If you are downloading an ebook, choose the Adobe EPUB format: You will see a message saying that your book/audiobook is loading: To open a book or audiobook that you have downloaded, swipe your finger from the left side to the right to open the home menu and tap “Bookshelf”: You will then be able to tap the cover of the book to open it: To return, delete, or share information about a book that you have downloaded, press and hold your finger on the book cover: To change the font size, style, or color, tap the middle of the screen: You also have the option to install a free Kindle app on your iOS device. Assessment with iPad Online Assessments in Education High-stakes standardized assessments are commonplace in American K–12 public education. Virtually every state uses some form of these assessments to help gauge student achievement and readiness for college and career. The last decade has seen the assessment stakes raised to new levels, first through federal enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in 2002, and then with a state-led effort to establish a common set of educational standards beginning in 2009, known as the Common Core State Standards. Common Core State Standards The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) articulate the English language arts and mathematics knowledge and skills that students need to graduate. They were created through a joint effort of the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers; 45 states and the District of Columbia have adopted them. CCSS are expected to strongly influence the direction of curriculum, encourage development of instructional materials aligned to them, and lead to the implementation of comprehensive assessment systems to measure student performance against them. Common Core Assessments Comprehensive assessment systems are the focus of much national attention and federal investment. The goal is for the nation’s public schools to transition to a new set of “next generation” online assessments in English language arts and mathematics that align to CCSS, beginning with the 2014–2015 school year. To accomplish this, the federal government has invested $370 million in two major state consortia—the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)—as well as three smaller consortia focused on alternative assessments for student with special needs: Assessment Services Supporting English Learners Through Technology Systems; Dynamic Learning Maps Alternate Assessment System Consortium; and National Center and State Collaborative.
