This guide will show you how to display closed captions and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing on your Apple devices.

How to Turn on & Subtitles on Apple Devices

In order to display closed captions on videos you watch on iOS, you'll need to adjust your device settings to display captions. iPhone or iPad NOTE 1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility 2. The first step is to create closed captions for your video. You can either do this yourself or use a professional captioning service, like 3Play Media.

Caption come in many different formats. SCC (.scc) is the format compatible with iOS devices.

Once you've created your SCC caption file, you need to encode it your video file. You can do this yourself using the QuickTime Pro software or use 3Play Media's encoding service. Keep in mind that there are a few drawbacks to doing it yourself:

 QuickTime Pro is not free. It costs about $30 in the .  QuickTime Pro for Windows does not have a closed caption capability, so this method can only be done on a Mac.  It is a time‐consuming process, especially if you have lots of videos.

How to Encode Closed Captions for iOS with 3Play Media

Captions can be "soft encoded" — with closed captioning enabling the viewer to turn them on or off — or "hard encoded" — which burns the captions into the file permanently. Hard‐encoded caption (aka open captions) cannot be turned off.

Here's how to encode captions into your video:

1. Submit Video File for Transcription & Captioning

First, you need to transcribe your video and create an SCC caption file. To simplify the process, send your video file to 3Play Media for captioning and transcription. Or, if you already have a transcript but need caption timestamps, you can use the automated transcript alignment service. If you already have a caption file, you can simply import it to 3Play Media.

2. Order Caption Encoding for Your Video

Once your file has been captioned, you can order the caption encoding service.

In your 3Play Media account, navigate to My Files and select your video file. Then, click on Order > Caption Encoding.

Follow the prompts to submit your order. Your caption encoding should be completed in a matter of hours.

3. Download Your Video with Captions Encoded

Upon completion, you will receive an email notification and be able to download an M4V video with encoded captions. The captioned video will work with any player or device that supports M4V videos, including QuickTime, iPad, iPhone, iPod, iTunes, JW Player, and Flowplayer.
