  • John Le Carré's the Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold
John le Carré’s The Secret Pilgrim and the End of the Cold War Jonathan Goodwin Abstract. The Secret Pilgrim was John le Carré’s first novel to consider the end of the cold war. The author describes how the novel’s embedded structure reveals le Carré’s political perspective more clearly than previous works and argues that this narrative frame is an adaptation to the sud- den collapse of le Carré’s traditional subject matter. In a speech given at University of Edinburgh, John le Carré remarked that only the spy novel could reveal the world’s hidden agendas (qtd. in Atwood 21). His own represen- tational agendas of betrayal and duplicity in the cold war (and after) are revealed in an unusual way in his The Secret Pilgrim (1990). The book, which contains a series of discrete episodes linked with a frame narrative, reveals the relationship between le Carré’s politi- cal thought and narrative technique more clearly than any of his other works because of the bareness of its structure. A source for le Carré’s title may be Rupert Brooke’s poem “Dust”: And every mote, on earth or air, Will speed and gleam, down later days, And like a secret pilgrim far By eager and invisible ways, Nor ever rest, nor ever lie, Till, beyond thinking, out of view, One mote of all the dust that’s I Shall meet one atom that was you. (49) The transmutation of the body into its elements in death, and the romantic possibility of preservation of some spirit beyond it, are the immediate references in Brooke’s poem; the particulate imagery of atoms and motes is also significant.

  • A Most Wanted Man by Anton Corbijn: Poetics of Imprisonment
student research A Most Wanted Man By Anton Corbijn: Poetics Of Imprisonment Nathaniel Imel Thurgood Marshall College, Class of 2020 SYNOPSIS: A Most Wanted Man (A. Corbijn, 2014): A Most Wanted Man opens in text explaining how since 9/11, when “intelligence failures and interdepartmental rivalries” allowed the man who conceived preparation for the 9/11 attacks to go on undiscovered, Hamburg has been on high alert for terrorism. Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin) is a Chechen refugee who has been tortured in the Russian state security system. He has recently escaped prison, and illegally slips into the port of Hamburg. Gunther Bachman (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a spy in Hamburg, who along with his team, works to find and ‘turn’ individuals who have ties to Islamist terrorist organizations into his informants. He notices Karpov and begins to monitor him. Gunther is unkempt and displays signs of addiction and/or PTSD, though his team is elite and highly competent. It is made up of Maxi, Carl, Niki, and Rasheed, an informant and the son of a prominent Muslim scholar, Dr. Abdullah. Gunther believes Abdullah is funneling money to Al Qaeda under the cover of philanthropy. Dieter Mohr, a head German intelligence official, and Martha Sullivan (Robin Wright), an American diplomat, take an interest in Gunther’s investigations. It is revealed that Bachman had made a tragic mistake in Beirut in the past, and that this disgrace hovers along with Mohr and Sullivan, over Bachman’s head, although the details of the traumatic incident are not made explicit. Issa contacts a social worker, Annabel Richter (Rachel McAdams), who helps him make contact with wealthy banker Tommy Grue.

  • NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Follow the Money: Transparency
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Follow the Money: Transparency, Risk, and Financial Regulation in the Age of Terror A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of Sociology By Anna Hanson EVANSTON, ILLINOIS June 2017 2 © Copyright by Anna Hanson 2017 All Rights Reserved 3 ABSTRACT After 9/11 there was a shift in the rhetoric surrounding counter-terrorism. Suddenly, the language of risk, security and prevention was being utilized to justify a new set of global financial regulations headed up by international organizations such as the United Nations, The Financial Action Task Force, and the IMF/World Bank. This project sits at the nexus of finance and security, and argues that the fight against terrorism financing has important implications not just within the security realm, but for everyday financial practices and the ways in which global financial flows are understood and governed. In other words, how do regulators and financial actors govern, monitor, and hopefully prevent the financing of terrorism, without hindering the facilitation of global financial flows? From a broader perspective, analyzing the shift to the use of financial data in order to help fight terrorist financing touches upon much broader themes; the relationship between transparency, liberalization and re-regulation of financial markets, the proliferation of privatized power and the relationship between freedom and security. This dissertation adopts the governmentality (Foucault 2007) approach in order to analyze how terrorism financing is governed, or in this case prevented, through the monitoring and eventual determination of whether basic financial activities can be considered ‘normal’ or ‘suspicious’, and what are the unintended consequences of such a system that ultimately comes to view everyone as suspicious? 4 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are several people who provided insight, guidance, support and friendship throughout this dissertation process, and I want to take a moment to thank them.

REVIEWS (Composite).qxd 1/9/04 1:38 AM Page 53 53 Reviews Espiocracy John Le Carré, A Most Wanted Man, Hodder & Stoughton, 350 Pages, cloth ISBN 9780340977064, £18.99 James Rubin, during his brief and ill-starred career as an ‘anchor’ man for Sky News, defined ‘extraordinary rendition’ as an operation when the authorities in the country from which the US was rendering its captives didn’t know what was happening. When the authorities did know what was going on, that was simply ‘rendition’ as usual. Madeleine Albright’s junior at the Department of State during President Clinton’s second term seemed to have some direct experience of rendition and how it is practised by United States agencies. According to Rubin’s definition, the pending rendition of Issa and Abdullah, innocent and ‘five per cent bad’ respectively, at the conclusion of John Le Carré’s new novel would appear to be not at all ‘extraordinary’. Their snatch in Hamburg is facilitated by regional and Federal German agencies, even to the extent of disabling the plans of Günther Bachmann, experienced spook, who thought he had the support of German foreign intelligence. Bachmann contends that Hamburg was 9/11’s second ground zero. Mohamed Atta, who flew one of planes into New York’s Twin Towers on that sunny September morning, came from Cairo to Hamburg in 1992 to continue his architectural studies. In due course, he joined with others to plan the attacks on the United States. How had German intelligence failed to stop this? The answer lies in part in the failure to recruit influential persons in the Muslim community, according to Bachmann.

  • A Most Wanted Man
A MOST WANTED MAN PRODUCTION NOTES A Film by Anton Corbijn Running time: 121 minutes FilmNation Press Contacts: Selena Saldana, [email protected]. +1-917-484-8914 Sarah Jarvis, [email protected], +1-917-484-8916 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Anton Corbijn on Philip Seymour Hoffman: 'He was a giant of a man' The director of A Most Wanted Man, Hoffman's last completed film, recalls working with an outstanding actor who liked to immerse himself in his character and give his all: I'm not sure where to start when looking at Philip's legacy as it is overwhelming in its scope and depth. But that immediately tells you a lot about his choices. He was the best character actor I can think of, and if you look at just the smaller roles he occupied, then those performances alone set him apart from his contemporaries. His strength was a total immersion in the role and a lack of vanity. At the same time, he hated what he loved, that was his curse – he would tear himself to pieces over his performances. It was my girlfriend Nimi who, upon reading the script of A Most Wanted Man, immediately suggested I approach Philip Seymour Hoffman; in retrospect, there was only one choice. It was obvious that he would be the person to bring this John le Carré character to life. I always imagined this man to have a strong physicality as well as intelligence and a certain kind of leadership. When Phil and I watched the film together in its early stages, I could not believe that the guy sitting next to me was the same person as the one on screen.
