“Rodd is the spitting image of his father — turned out to be a fine young man. What I remember most is that all the sons [of Dallas Cowboys] hung around the locker room and Rodd really enjoyed that time with his Dad. Since Rodd is about the same age as my daughter Tori — the connection was our kids, who went to the same schools and lived in the same area of Lake Highlands. I am really proud of my daughters and what they have grown to become and I know if Robert was here now, I know he’d be proud as well.
The maturity of Rodd always stood out — he was always more mature than hisage in that he was willing to accept responsibility. That truly has a lot to do with Robert - or Robert’s influence. I can recall Robert’s routine after practice. He would take a quick shower, get dressed, and rush to the University of Texas at Dallas to work on his Master’s degree in Mathematics. This set an example for his children, especially his sons. I can tell this example had a great impact on Rodd. I wasn’t around as much during Robert’s last days, which were spent at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for treatments — but Rodd kept us informed. He took the reins and did whatever was necessary to give his Dad the comfort he needed. When the entire family ‘bout moved to Minnesota, Rodd made that happen. He stepped up and took charge of the situation.
The family even developed a slogan in honor of their father’s legacy, #WeAre44Strong. Since Rodd and his Dad were so close, it had to be very hard on him. All in all, I am glad to see that Rodd turned out to be a family man like his father — principled and God-fearing, just as Robert would have wanted.”
