*Over its long history, Port Arthur has been a place of hardship and punishment, a place of opportunity, and a place of leisure. Now it is one of Australia’s most important heritage destinations, where the story of Australia’s colonial history is written in stone and brick. Port Arthur Historic Site is a large site holding a great many stories. Places like the Penitentiary, which was originally constructed as a flour mill and granary in 1843, before it housed hundreds of convicts in dormitories and solitary cells; or the much-feared Separate Prison, where harsh physical punishment was replaced with punishment of the mind; and the unconsecrated Convict Church, where authorities sought to reform Port Arthur’s convicts through a regime of religious instruction and worship. A visit here includes a guided walking tour of the grounds and a cruise around the Isle of the Dead (cemetery to convicts). *Bruny Island is made up of a North and South Island which are separated by a narrow Salamanca Market isthmus called "The Neck". The island has a population of around 620 and is deceptively large - being about 100 kilometres in length. North Bruny is drier than the south and is mostly comprised of open pastures and light bushland. The narrow isthmus joining the two parts of the island is called The Neck. This is home to the Lookout - a timber stepped boardwalk that takes you to some of the most spectacular 360° panoramic views of the Bruny Island coastline. In contrast to the north, South Bruny is hilly, heavily timbered and includes large rainforest areas. ** MONA (Museum of Old & New Art) Located just up the river from Hobart (Tasmania's southern capital), Mona's subterranean architecture showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of David Walsh’s $110m private collection of art and antiquities, as well as hosting a busy exhibitions program. *The Wall in the Wilderness is Australia's most ambitious art project undertaken in recent years. Greg Duncan has carved the history of the highlands in 100 metres of timber, most of which in rare Huon Pine. The beautifully carved works set out in relief sculpture depict the history, hardship and perseverance of the people in the Central Highlands. Duncan is already known for the uncanny realism he brings to his work and his pieces are sought after by collectors around the world. Each metre of the panels, including horses, thylacines and foresters represents a month's work. There is nothing like this anywhere else in Australia.
