On January 28, 2009, Johnson C. Smith University President, Dr. Ronald L. Carter named Steven Aycock as the 20th head football coach in Golden Bull history.

Aycock embarks on his fourth season as the Golden Bulls’ head football coach. He led JCSU to their first postseason victory since 1969 with a victory in the 2011 . Aycock coached the Golden Bulls to a 6-5 record in 2011; the first winning season at Johnson C. Smith University since 2006.

Aycock has over 17 years of coaching experience as an assistant and offensive lineman coach. He has brought enthusiasm, passion, tenacity, and a thorough understanding of football from various aspects. “I am determined to make Johnson C. Smith football a powerhouse in the CIAA and in Division II football,” says Aycock. “I will utilize my opportunity to showcase my knowledge of the game through my coaching experiences and develop our student-athletes into better players and people.”

As a part of the previous football coaching staff in 1996, Aycock helped the Golden Bulls orchestrate an impressive 7-3 record, the first time in 15 years that the program recorded a winning season. Aycock not only brings a new energy to Golden Bull football, but he symbolizes a new era at JCSU. He is determined to guide the program in the direction of conference championship contenders and an elite in Division II college football. versus Virginia State Saturday, September 22, 2012 | 4:00 pm ET

A second recovery led to a touchdown for the Golden Bulls prior to halftime. This time after a seven play offensive drive, junior running back Denzel Hartley (Lithonia, GA) fumbled in the end zone off a four yard run. Junior tight end Jimmy Drye, Jr. (Concord, NC) was alert enough to recover the fumble for the score. The game was knotted up 21-21 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Golden Bulls grabbed their first and only lead of the contest. WVSU quarterback Ricky Phillips lost the handle on a snap in the shotgun formation inside his own 10 yard line. JCSU forced a safety and snatched a 23-21 advantage with 12:17 on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets eventually recaptured the lead with a touchdown at the 2:31 mark of the third quarter. The score remained 28-23 in favor of WVSU going into the fourth. Things really began to look grim for JCSU after another touchdown by West Virginia State with 8:24 left to play.

However, the Golden Bulls quickly responded with a three play touchdown drive of their own. Wallace connected with junior receiver Terrell Hutchison (Chester, SC) for a 16 yard TD pass with 7:09 on the clock. A two-point conversion attempt was successful with a pass from Wallace to Drye over the middle. JCSU drew within one possession (34-31) with the score.

Johnson C. Smith regained one final offensive possession in the last 90 seconds of the contest. On a second and three from the WVSU 45 yard line, Wallace was sacked for a loss of 10 to make it third and long. The Golden Bulls failed to convert and WVSU sealed the season opening win.

Junior defensive back Damion Miles (Beaufort, SC) and senior linebacker Michael Coats (Greenwood, SC) each had a team-high eight tackles. However, Darius Wallace was the defensive standout with six tackles including a sack and a blocked punt. Wallace also performed punting duties. He had seven punts with a long of 55 yards and two punts inside the 20 (one that was downed at the two yard line). versus Virginia State Saturday, September 22, 2012 | 4:00 pm ET 2012 GOLDEN BULLS FOOTBALL AVAILABLE LIVE THROUGH WGNC 1450 AM RADIO

CIAA Football Weekly Preview “Week 4”

Game of the Week (3-0) at Saint Augustine’s Falcons (2-1)

The game of the week showcases an intriguing cross-divisional matchup between both teams- picked to finish second in their respective divisions. Northern Division stalwart Bowie State is off to a 3-0 start after a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Fairmont State on Saturday. The Bulldogs trailed 17-0 in the fourth quarter, before storming back to tie the game and send it to overtime where they pulled out a 24-17 win. Leading the way in the scintillating comeback was senior quarterback Tyrae Reid, Jr. Reid passed for a career-high 329 yards and threw three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime to propel the Bulldogs to the win. Tailback Corwin Acker (6 catches, 59 yards) also had a huge day, hauling in two touchdown passes from Reid, including the game-winner in overtime. Acker also led Bowie State with 105 yards rushing. BSU also got another solid game from receiver Doug McNeill, who leads the CIAA with 16 receptions for 270 yards. Against Fairmont State, McNeill snared seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. Fellow receiver Gary Cropper chipped in, catching six passes for 114 yards as the Bulldogs amassed 453 yards of offense and dominated time of possession 46:23 to 28:37. Southern Division contender Saint Augustine’s is 2-1 following a 30-14 win over Southern Connecticut State. Just like Bowie State, the Falcons fell behind early, before storming back to score 30 unanswered points. Quarterback Teddy Bacote, who passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns against Southern Connecticut, leads the Falcons. Through his first three games, Bacote has thrown for 606 yards, seven touchdowns, and just two interceptions. His favorite target through the first few games has been Brian Richards who leads the CIAA with 26 receptions. The Falcons’ big gun on defense has been linebacker Chaz Robinson who has accumulated 40 tackles and an interception. The Bulldogs and Falcons square off at Durham County Stadium at 7:00 pm. Live Stats: http://www.sidearmstats.com/staug/football%20- and http://www.sidearmstats.com/bowie/ football/scoreboard.aspx, (2-1) at #5 Winston-Salem State Rams (3-0)

The fifth-ranked Rams open their conference schedule with a visit from perennial Northern Division contender Virginia Union. Winston-Salem State is coming off of a 55-21 thumping of Morehouse on Saturday. The Rams lead the conference in total offense at 481.3 yards a game and are equally effective passing or running the ball. Tailback Maurice Lewis has taken the mantle as the Rams’ featured-back and has literally run with it. Lewis is tops in the conference in rushing with 378 yards. Quarterback Kameron Smith is fourth in the league in passing with 726 yards and seven touchdowns. Virginia Union will counter the Rams’ offensive firepower with a defense that is allowing a league-low 233 yards a game. The Panthers have been especially adept against the run, allowing just 92.7 rushing yards a game. Offensively, Virginia Union will likely line up and try to run right at the Rams. The Panthers average 179.3 yards rushing per game. Leading the ground attack is tailback Jerrell Washington who is averaging 105 yards a game and has scored six touchdowns. Much to their disadvantage, VUU has struggled with their passing game, averaging just 97.0 yards a game. This plays into the hands of the Rams who have shown some vulnerability against the pass (allowing 225.0 yards a game), but who are stout against the run (allowing 89.7 yards per game). If the Panthers can’t effectively move the ball through the air enough to keep the Rams from crowding the line and keying on Washington, it could be a long day. The Rams dominated last year’s match-up 67-16. Game time is 6:00pm at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem. Elizabeth City State Vikings (1-2) at Fayetteville State Broncos (1-2)

Both teams picked up their first win of the season last week and look to continue that momentum into the conference portion of their schedules. Elizabeth City State nipped Albany State, 13-12 on Saturday, behind a Daronte McNeil touchdown run and two Brett Symonds field goals. McNeil, the reigning CIAA Offensive Player of the Year, has gotten off to an uncharacteristically slow start this season, averaging 87.0 yards per game with one touchdown. The Vikings have to get McNeil going to kick-start a sputtering offense. Fayetteville State posted a 28-17 win over Virginia Union on Saturday. Tailback Colon Bailey rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos. The Broncos have used two quarterbacks extensively through their first three games. Chauncey Concepcion and Andreas Hudson have combined to throw for 536 yards. Defensively, the Broncos had a 62-yard interception return for touchdown from safety Michael Johnson in the win over VUU. ECSU won last year’s meeting 42-21. Kickoff is 6:00pm in Fayetteville State. Listen Live: www.wfss.com; Live Stats: http://www.fsubroncos.com/gametracker/launch/gt_mfootbl.html?event=1088148&school=fast&sport=mfootbl&camefrom=&startschool=& Lincoln Lions (0-3) at Livingstone Blue Bears (0-3)

The misery ends for one of these teams this week as the last two winless teams in the league square off in Salisbury. Despite the winless record, Livingstone features a potent offense that averages 428.7 yards and 29.3 points a game. Freshman quarterback Drew Powell leads the CIAA, averaging 314 passing yards a game and has thrown eight touchdowns. Wide receivers Avery Collins and Anthony Holland have combined for 35 catches for 437 yards. Tailback Javon William has rushed for 226 yards. While the LC offense has sizzled, the defense has fizzled. The Blue Bears are giving up 473.7 yards and 53.7 points a game.
