  • Origin of Bank Filtered Groundwater Resources Covering the Drinking Water Demand of Budapest, Hungary
ORIGIN OF BANK FILTERED GROUNDWATER RESOURCES COVERING THE DRINKING WATER DEMAND OF BUDAPEST, HUNGARY I. FORIZS Laboratory for Geochemical Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences J. DEAK Water Resources Research Centre Pic. Budapest, Hungary Abstract - The ratio of Danube water/infiltrated precipitation has been determined using stable oxygen isotope data on four parts of the protection area of the bank filtered water works supplying drinking water for Budapest, Hungary. These ratios comparing to those cal- culated by hydraulic modeling rarely match each other. The Danube water transit time calcu- lated for few wells by isotopic data are usually shorter than those determined by hydraulic modeling. The relation between the 8 O values and the nitrate, chloride and sulfate pollut- ants shows that the source of the pollutants is on the island area (sewage water, agricultural activity and salt used for de-icing asphalt roads). 1. INTRODUCTION The drinking water demand of more than two million inhabitants of Budapest is mainly covered by bank filtered water of the River Danube. In 1990 the average drinking wa- ter consumption of Budapest was 976,000 m3/d [1], and it was 780,566 m3/d in 1995 [2]. The bank filtered wells are located on the both sides of the Danube north and south of Budapest, in Budapest, and on the bank shores of the Szentendre Island and Csepel Island (Fig. 1). The ratio of the Danube water and the infiltrated precipitation in the supplied water is a very important question related to the drinking water quality. The infiltrated precipitation is potentially polluted by agricultural activity and communal waste water of unsewered settle- ments.

  • Wedding at Ecser”
Acta Ethnographica Hungarica 65(1), 81–104 (2020) DOI: 10.1556/022.2020.00006 Heritage-Making in the Metropolitan Area. The Case of the “Wedding at Ecser” Received: January 11, 2020 • Accepted: February 14, 2020 Ágnes Eitler Institute of Ethnology, Research Centre for the Humanities, Budapest European Ethnology Doctoral Program, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest Abstract: The paper focuses on the case study of a settlement in the immediate vicinity of the Hungarian capital, which became nationally recognized in the second half of the 20th century through the staging of the community’s wedding customs, known as Wedding at Ecser. Over the decades, the element lifted out of the local lifeworld – and ultimately constructed – has become linked with various community meanings and interpretive structures, through the examination of which the underlying historical, economic, and socio-cultural processes are being presented. Not only has the cultural relic – initially constructed by and through external actors – appreciated for local society, it soon developed into a central element of self-representation. At the same time, the cyclically growing interest in the staged custom and the repeated re-articulation of the wedding in new ways were closely linked with the social changes of the given period and the transformation of the local community and also dependent on the nature of power discourses at the local level. However, the wedding became not only an economic, ideological, political resource for the local community but also a valid meaning structure beyond the local level. This study pays special attention to discussions of the role that this phenomenon – which has nearly 60 years of history and many layers of meaning – may have played in the heritagization practices of the 21st century.

  • The Role of Land Use Change on Water Erosion in the Gödöllő Hillside 1
The role of land use change on water erosion in the Gödöllő Hillside Demény, K.1 – Jakab, G. – Centeri, Cs. 1Budapest Tech Polytechnical Institute Rejtő Sándor, Faculty of Light Industry and Environmental Protection Engineering, Doberdó út 6, H-1034 Budapest, Hungary. Tel: +36-16665941, Fax: +36-16665909, E-mail: [email protected] 1. Abstract The landscape of Hungary has changed radically in the past decades. As a result of an intensive need for land use (spreading of residential areas, greenfield investments etc.) the natural environment has been diminishing. On the other hand, the needs of society for intact areas have been increased more and more. The Gödöllő Hillside has a big environmental stress, because it is situated close to the Budapest agglomeration. In the recent years, the effects of suburbanisation manifest more significantly since the population has already started moving out from the capital city. Some settlements can meet the expanded requirements if they establish new residential areas. As a result of previous the area of cultivated lands has reduced whereas the amount of built up areas has increased. Due to a change in land use, such as the new roads, lots of houses and ever shrinking agriculture and sylviculture, the spatial structure becomes more and more fragmented. The fragmented spatial structure and hillside relief enhance the erosion processes. The observed hillside area is one of the mostly eroded lands in Hungary. The erosion processes can be stopped just in time applying the tendencies written in the survey. We show erosion maps using USLE model. In this way, the mostly endangered slopes can be determined.

  • Land Reform and the Hungarian Peasantry C. 1700-1848
Land Reform and the Hungarian Peasantry c. 1700-1848 Robert William Benjamin Gray UCL Thesis submitted for a PhD in History, 2009 1 I, Robert William Benjamin Gray, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 25th September 2009 2 Abstract This thesis examines the nature of lord-peasant relations in the final stages of Hungarian seigneurialism, dating roughly from 1700 to the emancipation of the peasantry in 1848. It investigates how the terms of the peasants’ relations with their lords, especially their obligations and the rights to the land they farmed, were established, both through written law and by customary practice. It also examines how the reforms of this period sought to redefine lord-peasant relations and rights to landed property. Under Maria Theresa land reform had been a means to protect the rural status quo and the livelihood of the peasantry: by the end of the 1840s it had become an integral part of a liberal reform movement aiming at the complete overhaul of Hungary’s ‘feudal’ social and economic system. In this period the status of the peasantry underpinned all attempts at reform. All reforms were claimed to be in the best interests of the peasantry, yet none stemmed from the peasants themselves. Conversely, the peasantry had means to voice their grievances through petitions and recourse to the courts, and took the opportunity provided by the reforms to reassert their rights and renegotiate the terms of their relations to their landlords.
