My inquiry is centered on the epic poem “A” (1974) by American author Louis Zukofsky, considering the ways in which Zukofsky reconceptualizes the role that the past – its events, people, art – plays in the construction of a modern poetic consciousness. The project is divided into two sequences: historical representation of movements “A”-22 and “A”-23 in the poem and historical engagement in movements “A”-21 and “A”-24. The first sequence is a survey of the ways in which Zukofsky recreates the last 6,000 years of history in a manner that resists linearity and narrative. I read his poetry alongside Walter Benjamin’s “On the Concept of History” (1940) and Gilles Deleuze’s Essays Clinical and Critical (1997) in order to consider the extent to which Zukofsky problematizes historical and literary language, and their limits of communication and expression in the poetic-now. The second sequence focuses on the historical materials with which Zukofsky engages, primarily the iv Roman playwright Plautus, as well as Zukofsky’s own previous writing. I contend that Zukofsky method of participating with history in his work is a kind of creative engagement with the past, one that acknowledges history as a living thing and seeks to absorb it into the formation of a new poetics. This is a performance of escape- work, so that texts, through active historical participation, resist textual totality and begin to reconnect themselves to the world outside of their binding in order to work within our contemporary reality. v Acknowledgments This project would not have been possible without the staggering patience and support of my director, Dr. Chris Meade. Robert Creeley, “The End” Rowe 2 Introduction “let me live here ever”: Louis Zukofsky’s Poetics of History The intersection of philosophy and history engenders a certain problem of reading. We often consider history as a record, a flawless, objective account of things that have come before. This information is meant to educate us on the manner of our arrival into the present moment and, like the cold, mathematical equation, justifies the outcomes of events that create the contemporary state of things without the opportunity or worse the necessity for doubt or reconsideration. But philosophy recognizes that things cannot be reduced to such basic components, that history is as much a product of conflicting ways of thinking. It has taught us that to read history is akin to reading any other text and necessitates a critical eye and skepticism towards the reductionism of grand, sweeping, and politically powerful historical narratives. This is not to say, however, that these narratives do not hold some influence regardless of their validity. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche posed this issue in an essay in which he describes the pressure of the historical on the contemporary individual through the allegory of looking at an animal: [the human] also wondered about himself and how he was unable to learn to forget and always clung to what was past; no matter how far or how fast he runs, that chain runs with him. It is a cause for wonder: the moment, here in a flash, gone in a flash, before it nothing, after it nothing, does, after all, return as a ghost once more and disturb the peace of a later moment. (“On the Utility and Liability of History for Life,” 126) This is a haunting that is fundamentally inescapable because it is not a physical presence, even in a future where there is no written history, the memory carried by society will linger and permeate into new policy, culture, economy. Walter Benjamin, an ardent student of Nietzsche’s work, took the opposite view when constructing his drafts and notes for the Rowe 3 unfinished Arcades Project (Passagenwerk), a historical and philosophical explorations of the Paris Arcades as an emblem for the culture of the 19th century. Benjamin considered his goal for the book to be the building of a “dreaming city,” and while the text was never finished, its current state is a testament to the value of collecting and collaging historical material as a means of understanding the way the present is shaped and the social responsibility contemporary individuals possess today to the future. One place to read this same tendency is in the poetry which seeks to tell or retell history, particularly the epic poem, which has historically served as an artistic monumentalizing of nationalist pride and narrative, as in Spenser’s The Faerie Queene or Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. But if we are to postulate a writing which does not flatten the complexities of historical and social narratives along national lines, then it is necessary to find an adequate example in a different kind of epic poem. Louis Zukofsky is a poet whose work, despite its contributions to the second- generation modernist aesthetics, carries a tendentious and under-appreciated relationship to high modernism. During the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, Zukofsky seemed on the verge of breaking through into the mainstream of American avant-garde poetry, but alas, his publishing output was limited, and the financial constraints forced to him to take up employment in schools and for the WPA project until his retirement in the 1960’s. His writing went largely ignored throughout his career, though his post-retirement period proved to be the time of his most prolific output. Although Zukofsky was not fully embraced by the movements of early modernism, his work is nevertheless a stunning instance of this era of literary and artistic production and therefore provides a productive source of inquiry into an under-discussed practitioner of experimental writing: his writing is historical, of its moment. Rowe 4 Zukofsky’s magnum opus, the epic poem “A”, was written in a period stretching from 1928 to 1974. It is one of the most ambitious and experimental long poems of the twentieth century. It is also one of the most challenging. Zukofsky’s project is concerned with the concepts of historiography, poetic tradition, and the limits and potentials of language. At over 800-pages, “A” is composed of 24 “movements”, like Homer’s epics, but there is no semblance of any overarching narrative or plot. It is a poem concerned

    “O my son Sun”: Poem beginning “The” JeffreyTwitchell-Waas “Poem beginning ‘The’” has been described aptly as Zukofsky’s “calling card” when in 1928 the young, unknown poet submitted it to Ezra Pound for publication in The Exile .1 All things considered, the poem was certainly a personal success, immediately introducing him to a world of relatively established modernist poets and the promise of further publication. Recently the poem has attracted a disproportionate amount of critical attention primarily because it addresses the intersection of and tensions between modernism and Jewishness, as well as having the advantage of appearing more accessible than the rest of Zukofsky’s major poems. However, the common reading of the poem, as centrally concerned with a young Jewish poet who must assert his ethnic identity against prevailing modernist ideologies that would marginalize him, is untenable. 2 It would be more plausible to read the poem as leaving behind such an identity or as explaining why he has already done so: although he certainly does not reject his Jewishness as an inevitable part of his make-up and work, he does reject Jewishness as an identity out of which he consciously writes or that would frame how he is to be read. In “Poem beginning ‘The’” poetic modernism (and to a degree political modernism) offers a way out of this narrower self-definition. A question that has not been asked is why “Poem beginning ‘The’” remains a one- off—there is almost nothing else like it in tone or manner in Zukofsky’s subsequent writing. One consequence is that whatever the intrinsic interest of the poem, it is a poor basis for making generalizations about Zukofsky’s poetry and attitudes.

ABSTRACT Yiddish and the Avant-Garde in American Jewish Poetry Sarah Ponichtera This dissertation traces the evolution of a formalist literary strategy through the twentieth century in both Yiddish and English, through literary and historical analyses of poets and poetic groups from the turn of the century until the 1980s. It begins by exploring the ways in which the Yiddish poet Yehoash built on the contemporary interest in the primitive as he developed his aesthetics in the 1900s, then turns to the modernist poetic group In zikh (the Introspectivists) and their efforts to explore primitive states of consciousness in individual subjectivity. In the third chapter, the project turns to Louis Zukofsky's inclusion of Yehoash's Yiddish translations of Japanese poetry in his own English epic, written in dialogue with Ezra Pound. It concludes with an examination of the Language poets of the 1970s, particularly Charles Bernstein's experimental verse, which explores the way that language shapes consciousness through the use of critical and linguistic discourse. Each of these poets or poetic groups uses experimental poetry as a lens through which to peer at the intersections of language and consciousness, and each explicitly identifies Yiddish (whether as symbol or reality) as an essential component of their poetic technique.

Retracing and reinforcing the frontiers of a profitable critical enterprise, Eliot calls for a more immediate, and intuitive interaction between the poetic lines and their “paratext.”2 115 However, thus still defending the aesthetic value of his referential apparatus, Eliot seems to have lost faith in the continuity of such practice in the contemporary creative and critical climate.

    22 WALTER PATER — IMAGISM — OBJECTIVIST VERSE Richard Parker (The University of Sussex) Abstract In this paper I make a two-fold argument; first that the Objectivist inheritance from modernism is, in a specific sense, Paterian, and secondly, that this Paterian influence (manifested principally in the form of the Paterian aesthetic moment) is not, as might be assumed, in conflict with the political tendencies exhibited by my central examples—Ezra Pound and Louis Zukofsky—but that the arguably apolitical aesthetic moment is in fact key to their political understandings. I will begin analysing how the Paterian moment lingers in Pound's poetry, especially his Imagist and Vorticist work, and is still at the core of his poetics when he begins The Cantos . I will then go on to argue that this same Paterian aesthetic moment continues in the early work of second-generation Modernists the Objectivists, and will look at the works of Louis as a representative example. I will then argue that this group of poets' Communism is not a break with their engagement with Paterian aestheticism, but that the Paterian moment is in fact alloyed with their understanding of Marxist-Leninism. The engagement with the far left that is generally supposed to mark these writers' defining divide with their modernist forebears will therefore be shown to be more closely linked to the older generation's practices than it might be thought and I will, finally, question the apparently aesthetic basis of Pound's alignment with the far-right. A consensus has developed regarding Walter Pater's influence upon the early stages of literary modernism.

I begin by discussing the concept of “sound writing,” referencing Haroldo de Campos’s concept of “transcration,” Pound’s “transduction,” and the concept behind calques. I then consider my homophonic translation of Finnish poet Leevi Lehto follows and Ulises Carrión’s isophonic translation. After noting Basil Bunting idea that meaning is carried by sound more than lexical content, I discuss Khelbnikov’s approach to zaum (transense), and sound- alike works based on bird song and animal sounds. The essay then takes up several specific examples: David Melnick’s homophonic translation of Homer, Pierre Joris’s voice recognition translation of Magenetic Fields, and Jean Donneley’s version of Ponge. The essay concludes with a discussion of Caroline Bergvall’s Drift, her version of “The Seafarer” as well as her Chaucer transcreations. A central part of the essay references “homophonic” translation in popular culture, in particular the “doubletalking” of Sid Caesar,” the most popular TV comedian of the early 1950s. A discussion of his work in the context of American Jewish comedy is central to the lecture. But other more recent popular example of the homophonic are discussed with special reference to cultural appropriation.
