The painter's products stand before us as though they were alive, but if you question them, they maintain a most majestic silence. It is the same with written words; they seem to talk to you as if they were intelligent, but if you ask them anything about what they say, from a desire to be instructed, they go on telling you just the same thing forever [emphasis mine]. ——Plato, Phædrus, 275d When objects speak to us, they engage poetic mentality that uses frames and exchanges across frames to construct a “boundary language.” Modern rhetorical theory generally assigns such actions to the figure of ekphrasis, but a more specific definition is needed. What is inside the frame “signals” to The Object Who Knew Too Much 1 us in a conventionalized way; but passage across and within framed spaces must shift to a new channel of communication. Although the art object must travel along smugglers’ trails by night and use special codes to “signalize” to us, the subjects–who–see, this signalizing constructs new channels in space and time. The covert message cannot be experienced in a detached way. The object in art engages the subject in sheer immediacy. This is the power of ekphrasis. We can imagine a shamanistic origin for this “here and now” function, where natural and specially constructed objects are empowered to speak a voix acousmatique, in codes and channels designated as permanently authentic. We already allow that art has a basic, native ekphrastic power: after all, poetry is sung to the heart, architecture is, naturally, architecture parlant.

By Tret Fure As we celebrate the 20th birthday of Local 1000, I raise a glass to the ones who came before me and first dreamed this union, and then worked hard to make it a reality. It wasn’t easy, but our founders persevered and we now stand 500 members strong. I joined Local 1000 in 1999, 6 years after our Charter and it was one of the most important decisions I have made in my life. I have been a member of the AFM since I was 16 but Local 1000 changed the way I looked at the union and at my future. I have friends, comrades, people to whom I can turn for solidarity, for protection and for advice. As I approach 65, I know that I have a pension waiting for me, one that I can further grow as I continue to work into very old age. I feel proud of the work we have done to get where we are and I am proud of the work we are doing to further us in all our endeavors. Our Fair Trade Music Campaign is a model for other Locals and the AFM at large. We have successfully signed up many venues, ensuring a fair wage for all working musicians. We have also negotiated collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) with several festivals to pay good wages and pension contributions and to provide decent working conditions for the ones who bring their beautiful work into all our lives.
