Letters to the Editor

Dear Editors,

In May 2016 when the village held a Public Meeting to discuss the issue of "new housing" for inclusion in the Village Development Plan 2015-2031, the recommended increase in building for a village of our size was between 10 to 15% of housing stock, approximately 25 to 40 new homes in North Kilworth.

Currently there is building development ongoing on South Kilworth Road, preparatory groundwork in progress on the Pincet Lane site and the latest planning application notice in the Parish Council Summary (paragraph 4. page 3 October NNK) for development on Land South of Station Rd., plus a number of houses in various in-fill sites throughout the village, so I applied under the Freedom of Information Act, to Council Planning Department, to request how many new houses had been built in the village since April 2015, together with the number already having received Planning Permission albeit not as yet built.

I quote from their letter dated 10th October 2019:

"Since 01.04.2015 there have been 14 new completions in North Kilworth". "The number of houses with Final Planning Permission under construction or yet to be built as of 31.03.2019 is 89."

This makes for a total of 103 new houses in under five years, three times the amount recommended back in 2016. Whilst fulfilling the national need for more housing is highly commendable, surely these figures give rise to concern regarding the future of North Kilworth’s "small village status ". It usually follows that with more houses, there are more vehicles, more people, and therefore ultimately a greater demand for more facilities and infrastructure to cater for the increased population. As that requirement is fulfilled, so too comes the increased possibility of losing our ‘small village status’.

For all the assurances given that our views and wishes for our village would be preserved with legal protection, it could be argued that "The North Kilworth Development Plan" has given us no protection from developers, but was simply a great waste of our Parish Rate. In the above meeting in 2016, some of us did try to raise our concerns that with too much housing, the precious character of our village could be lost. It is possible that our fears maybe realised more rapidly than we ever imagined.

Your sincerely, Mick Vincent. Important Notice for Children’s Society Box holders

The clocks have been changed and Christmas is coming . . . . .

so it’s time for me to collect and empty the Children’s Society boxes. As there will be no Christingle Service in the village this year, I will try to contact you all to arrange a convenient time for me to collect your box from your home, but please do phone or email me if you can deliver your box to me. I’ll return the box to you in the New Year.

Many families and individuals support the Children’s Society by popping their loose change into a special collecting box. This money goes to support young people who ask for help with all sorts of issues, and the Society does really important work providing care for children who feel so threatened at home, that they believe it’s safer to run away – sadly they usually discover that there are equally, if not more dangerous threats awaiting them on the streets. Please contact me of you too would like to support the work of The Children’s Society.

Speeding along the main road continues to be a major problem. The Parish Council are investigating the implementation of a Community Speedwatch scheme. A number of volunteers would be required to operate the scheme successfully. Further details of what the scheme entails can be found on the Community Speedwatch website: www.communityspeedwatch.org. Safari Supper - Saturday 7th March 2020

We're off on safari again! The Floodlit Sports Association are organising the 2020 Safari Supper. To book your place please contact: Lyanne Treadgold, [email protected]

If you haven't done it before or are new to the village it's a great way to get to know people! Here is how it works.

• Meet at the Village Hall to buy your drinks to take with you for the evening and find out where you are going for your starter. Don't worry if you don't know anyone, we will introduce you to your hosts and maps of the village will be available if you need them • Enjoy your starter and find out where you are going for your main • Enjoy your main and find out where you are going for your dessert • After dessert you head back to the Village Hall for coffee, drinks, liquors and music! We need hosts to cook either a starter, main or dessert catering for 8 people but not everyone needs to cook. If it's your first year of the Safari Supper and you would prefer not to cook let us know.

When booking your place please state if you have any dietary requirements and, if you are happy to cook, let us know which course you would prefer to do.

This is a great evening with usually 90 - 100 people taking part but there is no limit. The funds raised for the Safari Supper go towards the upkeep of the children's playground in the village and the floodlit tennis courts in addition to this 25% of the funds raised are also going towards St Andrews School to raise money for much needed equipment for the children.

We need final figures by the second week in January so we can start organising things.

As always thank you for your support of this fun evening. KEEPING YOU INFORMED Page 5

North Kilworth Church On Tour!!

As we approach the end of the year, are delighted to say our church will not be open for Christmas……ummm….wait a minute – that doesn’t sound great! What we mean to say is, St Andrew’s is having a makeover, so our usual services will have one too…..We thought it might be good to use the opportunity we have because of the great work that’s happening in our building to get out and about to be church in different places – so keep an eye out for what’s happening over the next few months and where you can catch up with us around the village!

Here are the first details….

In November, we will have only one service. We will meet at the War Memorial on Sunday 10th November at 5:45pm and then walk down to church for the Remembrance Service at 6pm. This will be the last service in our church before work begins.

In December, our Carol Singing will be different. On Thursday 19th December 6pm – 8pm we are inviting everybody to meet us as we walk around the village and sing carols at different places…..more details in next month’s magazine, but please save the date and come along dressed as your favourite character from the Christmas story!

For Christmas Eve, Tuesday 24th December, our service will be outside - a Pop-Up Nativity on the Millennium Green beginning at 3pm- family friendly with plenty to do and see….

So we are excited as we move into this season of change!

If you want to know more, chat to us! The Avon Swift Ministry Team and the North Kilworth PCC.

St. Andrew’s Church of England Primary School

Children at St Andrew’s continue to strive to do their best in all parts of the curriculum. We have continued to have a busy month with our children competing in a number of sporting events such as Table Tennis and Football.

School Council At the start of the month our children were busy with preparations for School Council elections. A large number of our children put themselves forward as candidates and spent time creating their campaign posters. After speeches and votes our new council for this year were elected.

Wear it Wild Day Our children dressed up as lions, tigers and other animals in aid of the WWF. During the day the children found out about endangered animals and about how pollution is affecting the world we live in.

Harvest At this time of year, the Children of St Andrew’s always think about those that are in need. This year the children donated a large amount of food to Lutterworth Food bank. We would like to thank everyone who donated food during this time. The children have also been thinking about what Harvest means to the local farmers. During our annual Harvest festival, the children shared songs, poems and prayers.

Drumming Workshop Who would have known we had so many talented drummers in North Kilworth! We were excited to welcome DCP drums into school for a morning. The children enjoyed listen- ing to the drums as well as having a go learning new beats.

We welcome volunteers to help with hearing children read and any other offers of help. Please contact the school office if you would like to help.

St Andrew’s CE Primary School – Books Request

Within the village we are fortunate enough to have an excellent primary school which provides our children and those from the surrounding area with the best education possible, encouraging in them a love of learning and allowing them to flourish and achieve their potential. At the heart of learning is reading and last year at St Andrew’s we updated our library by moving into a designated room, adding displays and a colourful mural wall. Many of our books are now getting rather ‘tired’ and worn and some are sadly beyond repair. Due to constraints in the school budget the buying of new books for the library is unfortunately not top of the list. As a governor at the school I have been helping out in the library for the past year and have become aware of the state of some of the books, both fiction and non-fiction. It would be so good to replace some books and have new authors for the children to enjoy. We are asking if anyone would like to gift books to school or make a donation specifically for books; it may be that you came through the school yourself or have children who attend or have recently left the school. We could add a note inside the cover to say who has donated the book or leave it anonymous. The school has created an initial ‘Wishlist’ on Amazon of books that they would particularly like, this can be accessed via the link: www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/QZG25GOICR7U?ref_=wl_share If you are unable to access Amazon but wish to make a monetary donation, this can be left at the school office in an envelope, clearly marked with what it is for. Finally, if you have any books at home, either fiction or non-fiction that you no longer want and are in good condition, we would be more than happy to accept them. They can be left at the school office or I can arrange to collect them. Carol Hall – 881050 ([email protected]) Page 12 NORTH KILWORTH NEWS

The evening also gives everyone the opportunity to drink their left over alcohol from Christmas and New Year which may help your quizzing.

North Kilworth Hawks FC - under 11s

North Kilworth Hawks had an amazing finish to the season by playing some fantastic football and winning the Bardon Hill tournament. We won our group on goal difference with 2 convincing wins and a draw with Rothley, a very strong team who we eventually met again in the final. Our semi-final was a close affair which we edged 3-2 against the hosts. The final was settled by a fantastic goal from 25 yards in the bottom corner. This was a great way to sign off 7 aside football! The new football season has now commenced and we are now playing 9 aside on a bigger pitch and the dreaded off-side rule has come into play! We have made a really strong start to the season with winning both of our matches and are looking forward to seeing how we do in this year’s Under 11’s Leicestershire and Rutland league. We’ll keep you updated! If your child is in the current school year 6 and would like to try our friendly club please contact Anthony on 07764 253965. Training is on Saturdays at 10am - South Kilworth village hall

North Kilworth Photography Club

On Tuesday 5th November 7:30pm to 9:30pm (and every second Tuesday) the North Kilworth Photography Club will meet in the Village Hall. This month we invite each person to bring three images (on a USB stick) for our club competition on the theme of 'Food & Drink'.

We will also be doing a practical workshop on 'Light Painting'. So bring cameras (or smartphones), coloured torches, battery powered fairy lights etc. and we can get creative! Tripods for cameras/phones and head-torches will be useful too.

This is a brand new club of about a dozen members so far. We are open to everybody, of any age. Our first competition was won by our youngest member, a 17 year old! Come and have some creative fun!"
