Defying Marginalization: Emergence of Women’s Organizations and the Resistance Movement in Pakistan: A Historical Overview By Rahat Imran1 and Imran Munir2 Abstract In the wake of Pakistani dictator General-Zia-ul-Haq’s Islamization process (1977-1988), the country experienced an unprecedented tilt towards religious fundamentalism. This initiated judicial transformations that brought in rigid Islamic Sharia laws that impacted women’s freedoms and participation in the public sphere, and gender-specific curbs and policies on the pretext of implementing a religious identity. This suffocating environment that eroded women’s rights in particular through a recourse to politicization of religion also saw the emergence of equally strong resistance, particularly by women who, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, grouped and mobilized an organized activist women’s movement to challenge Zia’s oppressive laws and authoritarian regime. -

255 Singh & Saini: Revisiting Partition of Punjab Revisiting Partition of Punjab: Retrieving Women’s Experience through KhamoshPani Barjinder Singh Department of English Studies, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, Punjab Alpna Saini Languages and Comparative Litt., Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, India _________________________________________________________________ The present article is a step towards retrieving the experiences of women during Punjab’s Partition as depicted in the film Khamosh Pani, ʺSilent Waters,ʺ (2003) and to provide an alternative to the written Partition history to articulate the woman subaltern’s experience of the Partition. Through a thematic and formalistic analysis of the film, this article tries to understand how Partition and the incidents of violence against women, rape, abduction, and killings of women are depicted in the film, and how all these descriptions in the film undermine the official, patriarchal nationalistic, and colonialistic discourses of Partition history. _________________________________________________________________ The present article contends that Khamosh Pani, ʺSilent Waters,ʺ (2003) as a distinct voice from the mainstream Bollywood cinema, sees Partition history in a radically different way than that of the official, colonialist and nationalist historiographies, giving voice to the subalterns of Indian Partition, like minorities, and women. To expand the reach of Malala’s memoir—I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban—and spread Malala’s message to young people and activists, the Global Women’s Institute (GWI) of the George Washington University (GW), in collaboration with the Malala Fund, developed a resource guide for high school and college students around the world. Building on the content of Malala’s memoir, the resource guide supports global efforts to mobilize women and men to address women’s and girls’ rights to an education. Malala’s memoir opens the door to some of the greatest challenges of our modern world. It is about politics, education, culture, religion and violence against women and girls. It is a moment in the life of a young girl and in the history of a country. To do these broad themes justice, faculty from a wide range of disciplines contributed to the development of the resource guide. The resource guide challenges students to think deeply, share their experiences, and engage with their communities. Each theme is divided into 4 parts: • Part 1 is the narrative with learning objectives to frame the conversation and help plan lessons; • Part 2 lists the resources to help students and teachers deepen their knowledge about the theme; • Part 3 lists individual and group activities, including some to be done outside of class if students are interested; • Part 4 is the high school supplement intended to help high school teachers introduce and discuss some of the concepts and context that appear in the theme narratives. -

PSP Occasional Paper No. 1, January 2012 Synchronising a Self Nation and Identity in Contemporary Pakistani Cinema Salma Siddique Pakistan Studies Programme Academy of International Studies Jamia Millia Islamia This study sets out to examine identities and experiences as imagined by three recent independent films from Pakistan - Khamosh Paani, Khuda Ke Liye and Ramchand Pakistani. Produced during the culturally relaxed phase of General Pervez Musharraf’s presidency, these films embody the ‘opening up,’ in terms of themes as well as contexts of transnational co-productions and circulation. These films constitute an important historical archive for their proximity to real events. Given that history writing has been a much contentious project in the country these films perform a crucial historical function through the fine interplay of the personal with the political. Casting a critical inward glance, the films articulate the discontents of a nation by privileging the figure of a beleaguered artist. In more than six decades of its existence Pakistani cinema has struggled with many difficulties, mirroring the trajectory of the nation. The study argues for going beyond the Partition prism in order to understand the contemporary subjectivities, conditioned as they were by the ubiquitous changes in the fortunes of the nation in the decades following l947. It examines the identities privileged in filmic texts and its relationship to a national self, considering the strategic use that religion has been put to in Pakistan. What emerges in this discussion is the polyphony of contemporary Pakistan, unsettling the all too easy fit between religion and nation. Today, it is the work of the independent filmmakers in Pakistan that 2012 provides hope for the revival of cinema in the country. -
