Ever since 1964, when Arkansas senator (1945 – 1974 in office) and President of International Relations Committee - James William Fulbright (1905 - 1995), initiated Fulbright program of international cooperation in the field of education, program participants and scholarships grantees have a reason to be proud. Today this program is present in over 155 countries, and over 8.000 scholarships are awarded each year. The fact that 53 former Fulbright scholarship grantees are Nobel Prize winners and 79 former Fulbright scholarship grantees are Pulitzer Prize winners, confirms the reputation of this program. In former Yugoslavia, which Serbia was a part of, from 1964 - 2014, over 3.000 scholarships were awarded. In recent years, Fulbright Alumni Association of Serbia includes other scholarship programs supported by the United States Government, such as: Ron Brown established in 1994 (in 1996 this program was named after the U.S.A. Commerce secretary), Hubert H. Humphrey, which was established in 1978 and named after the senator and U.S.A. Vice-president and GDP program (The Junior Faculty Development Program) established in 1994. Despite certain differences between these programs, their common goal is development of the international cooperation in fields of education, ideas and experience exchange, spreading values of human rights, democracy, dialog and tolerance. Or as the respected senator James William Fulbright said: “Educational exchange can turn nations into people, contributing as no other form of communication can to the humanizing of international relations.” Members and participants in these programs enjoy various benefits. During their study visits, academic specializations and research studies in the U.S.A., academic, cultural and economic diplomacy connects U.S.A. with participants and their home countries. This is an investment in education and science as well. The advantage of learning from more developed countries is, among else, the confirmation that education is the most valuable investment. In 2013, Government of the Republic of Serbia decided to support the 5 Fulbright program by giving certain amount of money to it. This is especially important because gained knowledge and experience acquired in the U.S.A. is implemented in scholarship users’ home countries. These programs are not unilateral but bilateral in nature. Large number of Serbian institutions (universities, faculties, institutes, hospitals and companies) have also hosted over 700 scholarship grantees coming from the U.S.A. to Serbia. Some of the users of the Fulbright, as well as the other aforementioned programs, are numerous distinguished people in Serbia, such as members of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Vojin Sulovic, Tibor Varadi, Vojislav Stanovcic); Rectors of the University (Fuada Stankovic, Dejan Popovic, Marija Bogdanovic, Vladimir Bumbasirevic); artists (Svetlana Bojkovic, Vida Ognjenovic, Olja Ivanjicki, Slobodan Sijan, Biljana Srbljanovic); and Deans of faculties, Governors, Ministers and a number of professors and researchers. The purpose of this updated Almanac is to gather, sort and process data on scholarship grantees. This represents a testimony of the beginnings, dynamics and development of the aforementioned programs. Available data on people, their fields of research and study and awarded scholarships serve as a contribution to better insight into education, science and culture development in Serbia. Belgrade, November 20th 2014. Prof. dr Slavisa Orlovic President of the Fulbright Alumni Association of Serbia Since 2012. until 2014.

Report of the Chair www.asme.org/divisions/amd SUMMER NEWS 2007 KENNETH M. LIECHTI, EDITOR Report of the Chair Timoshenko Medalist Awards & Medals Journal of Applied Mechanics News from the Technical Committees In Memoriam Tom Farris Tradition dictates that the outgoing Chair of the Division provide a report in the Newsletter. My five-year term on the committee ended June 30, 2007. I was humbled when Dusan Krajcinovic approached me about serving on the Executive Committee. The Applied Mechanics Division has a long history of being one of the strongest and most respected ASME divisions and taking a leadership role within AMD is a great honor that carries tremendous responsibility. It was a great pleasure to share this responsibility with Stelios Kyriakides, Pol Spanos, Mary Boyce, Wing Kam Liu, K Ravi-Chandar, Dan Inman, Zhigang Suo and Tayfun Tezduyar. I assure you that they all work tirelessly on behalf of AMD. I am pleased that Ares Rosakis of the California Institute of Technology agreed to serve on the Executive Committee beginning his term July 1, 2007. These outstanding individuals will continue distinguished, thorough and vibrant leadership of AMD. AMD continues to be one of the largest contributors to IMECE with 58 sessions in Chicago in 2006. One of the challenges for AMD is the annual request of more sessions at IMECE than are eventually allotted. This issue was particularly acute in Chicago. Thanks to all of the AMD Technical Committee Chairs who worked patiently with Dan Inman, 2006 Program Chair, to get as many sessions as possible by collaborating with other Divisions.

Solid Mechanics and Its Applications Series Editor: G.M.L. Gladwell Gérard A. Maugin Continuum Mechanics Through the Twentieth Century A Concise Historical Perspective Solid Mechanics and Its Applications Volume 196 Series Editor G. M. L. Gladwell Department of Civil Engineering University of Waterloo Waterloo, ON Canada For further volumes: http://www.springer.com/series/6557 Aims and Scope of the Series The fundamental questions arising in mechanics are: Why?, How?, and How much? The aim of this series is to provide lucid accounts written by authoritative researchers giving vision and insight in answering these questions on the subject of mechanics as it relates to solids. The scope of the series covers the entire spectrum of solid mechanics. Thus it includes the foundation of mechanics; variational formulations; computational mechanics; statics, kinematics and dynamics of rigid and elastic bodies: vibrations of solids and structures; dynamical systems and chaos; the theories of elasticity, plasticity and viscoelasticity; composite materials; rods, beams, shells and membranes; structural control and stability; soils, rocks and geomechanics; fracture; tribology; experimental mechanics; biomechanics and machine design. The median level of presentation is the first year graduate student. Some texts are monographs defining the current state of the field; others are accessible to final year undergraduates; but essentially the emphasis is on readability and clarity. Gérard A.
