A COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER FROM THE NORTH BELLMORE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The redesign of our Children’s Room and Teen Room are complete! Come visit us at Story Town! The newly renovated Children’s Room is a vibrant space for our young visitors and their caregivers. It features whimsical, colorful designs that create a microcosm of the North Bellmore community . Come delight in the detailed replicas of our local train station and town streets. The designs also highlight our community’s proximity to the local beaches and New York City. We created a space to engage the developing and curious minds of our youngest patrons with hands-on activities like a large puppet theatre, play houses and kitchens and interactive boards throughout. The early school years are filled with new adventures, and we wanted our library to be a destination on this adventure! Join us at Story Town with a Population Growing! And of course we couldn’t forget our teens! Our Teen Room got a fresh design to brighten up this space reserved exclusively for our patrons in grades 6 through 12. Our teens are valued and welcome at NBPL, and we wanted their space to reflect that. We hope our new spaces provide our community with an experience that will stay with them long after their visit! Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.

Natalia a young Jewish woman in Soviet Romania crosses paths with Victor—an important official in the Communist regime that she used to know as an impoverished young student. Now they are fatefully drawn into a passionate affair despite the obstacles swirling around them and Victor’s dark secrets.

Copies of the books are available at the circulation desk and ebooks are available via overdrive.

NOMADLAND Rated R Wednesday, July 14th at 1:30pm A woman embarks on a journey through the American West after losing everything during the recession. Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” a wistful portrait of itinerant lives on open roads across the American West, won best picture Sunday at the 93rd Academy Awards, where the -born Zhao became the first woman of color to win best director and a historically diverse group of winners took home awards.

THE FATHER Rated R Wednesday, July 28th at 1:30pm Anthony (Academy Award Winner, Anthony Hopkins) is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne (Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner, Olivia Colman), encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can't make daily visits anymore and Anthony's grip on reality is unraveling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her?

JUDAS & THE BLACK MESSIAH Rated R Wednesday, August 11th at 1:30pm FBI informant William O'Neal infiltrates the Illinois Black Panther Party and is tasked with keeping tabs on their charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton. A career thief, O'Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell. Hampton's political prowess grows just as he's falling in love with fellow revolutionary Deborah Johnson. Meanwhile, a battle wages for O'Neal's soul. Will he align with the forces of good? Or subdue Hampton and The Panthers by any means, as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover commands? Daniel Kaluuya wins best supporting actor Oscar for Judas and the Black Messiah

MINARI Rated PG Wednesday, August 25th at 1:30pm

A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home. South Korea's Youn wins best supporting actress Oscar for 'Minari' DAVID MARSHALL (Battle of the Bulge) Lecture on Thursday, July 15th at 2:pm Dave Marshall served honorably as a member of the 84th Infantry Division known as the “Railsplitters”. Mr. Marshall served on the front-lines throughout the European front during some of the most intense fighting of the war. He was deployed on Omaha Beach in 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. Come hear first hand the experiences of one of our cherished veterans. Please register in advance on our website www.northbellmorelibrary.org Called “the greatest American battle of the war” by Winston Churchill, the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes region of Belgium was Adolf Hitler’s last major of fensive in World War II against the Western Front. Hitler’s aim was to split the Allies in their drive toward Germany. The German troops’ failure to divide Britain, France and America with the Ardennes offensive paved the way to victory for the allies. Lasting six brutal weeks, from 16, 1944, to 25, 1945, the assault, also called the Battle of the Ardennes, took place during frigid weather conditions, with some 30 German divisions attacking battle-fatigued American troops across 85 miles of the densely wooded Ardennes Forest. As the Germans drove into the Ardennes, the Allied line took on the appearance of a large bulge, giving rise to the battle’s name. The battle proved to be the costliest ever fought by the U.S. Army, which suffered over 100,000 casualties. The formerly serene, wooded region of Ardennes was hacked into chaos by fighting as the Americans dug in against the German advance at St.-Vith, Elsenborn Ridge, Houffalize and, later, Bastogne, which was defended by the 101st Airborne Division.
