2 () Editorial MAYNOOTH - SCRUFFY, NEGLECTED, A DISGRACE

Scruffy, totally neglected, poorly presented, shabby buildings, uncaring attitude - the words leap out at us from the report of the judges of the tidy towns competition. We can only be ashamed of ourselves as we read the damning comments. Why 'we' you might ask? Because we are all collectively responsible for our environment. What does it say about us as a community when a dumped van is premitted to remain in the same spot for s~veral years, where litter is strewn around the street, where disused buildings are allowed to grow derelict and infect the local landscape, where grass verges are overgrown and weeds are abundant, where the standard of street furniture is just 'unacceptable', where the area around the public toilets is a disgrace? The play "innocence" BONANZA wliich ·was booked out for most of its run, was based on the life of Caravaggio an ItaJian painter. The play was difficult in many respects, and many found the coarseness of the language and the of the theme hard to take. David Nowlan, Drama Critic in the Irish Times hailed the playas "greatly daring, greatly demanding, and greatly rewarding. With it another Irish playwright has fully forged his reputation. Like it or not (and not all will) this is great theatre". If the Maynooth College Drama Society ever gets around to staging the play they will have no difficulty in locating a costume for one of the characters, although whether Cardinal 0 Fiach would be willing to lend his garb to an actor whose role is that of a seventeenth century cardinal who likes boys is open to question!

37 MAYNOOTH POST PRIMARY SCHOOL

Maynooth Post Primary School has been a hive of activity since our return to the groves of Academia. For our Intermediate and Group Certificate students, the long awaited results day finally came, - and in the euphoria of success that followed, the saiting period seel1)ed worthwhile. Our hearty congratulations to all our students - they did themselves - and us, proud. Success also on the sporting field, and in a variety of areas. Congratualtions to Helen Tracy, winner of a Gold Medal for Javelin at the National Community Games recently. Our senior panel were victorious in the Kildare Schools seven-a-side, and again at senior level our footballers were successful in the first round of the Senior (hampionsjip. For the first year students the highlight of the year must be their opening Mass held in the Post-Primary School on Tuesday, October 7th at 8.00 pm. Chief Celebrant was Bishop Dermot Mahony, assisted by Fr. E. Thynne, Fr. B. Supple and Fr. D. Cogan, Rev. J. Hammond also participated. (The Mass was warm and personal - readings, gifts and prayers reflecting the hopes, values and aspirations we hold for our young people. All in all it was a pleasant social evening for parents, students NAME ______and teachers, who enjoyed light refreshments (provided courtesy of a very busy and able Home Economic's Dept.) and easy conversation.}. We have just held the first Parent-Teacher Meeting of the year - for the second ADORESS ______year students. A well-attended and worthwhile exercise for everyone involved. The next such event will take place on November 10th at 7.30 pm - this time for the parents and teachers of our third year students. ACROSS And finally a word to our last year's students - the class of '86. For most of 6. Type Of Garden ( 9) these life really began early in October - their entry into the challenging and com I.
