It was a bold plan, the realisation of German educationalist Kurt Hahn. Hahn believed that much could be done to overcome religious, cultural and racial misunderstanding and avoid conflict if young people from all over the world could be brought together. It was felt that students aged 16 to 19 would be grounded in their own cultures but still impressionable enough to learn from each other. The first UWC – Atlantic College – opened in 1962 and today there are 17 UWC schools and colleges across five continents. In the turbulent world of the 21st century, UWC’s aims and objectives are as relevant as they were in 1962 – perhaps even more so. UWC Atlantic played a major part in developing this internationally recognised programme, while also emphasising the importance of experiential learning, community service and outdoor activities. Today all UWC schools and colleges teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma as a pre-University qualification within the UWC Educational Model that is embraced across the UWC schools and colleges. MISSION AND VALUES UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. UWC schools, colleges and programmes deliver a challenging and transformative educational experience to a diverse cross section of students, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future. UWC believes that to achieve peace and a sustainable future, the values it promotes are crucial: . International and intercultural understanding . Celebration of difference . Personal responsibility and integrity . Mutual responsibility and respect . Compassion and service . Respect for the environment . A sense of idealism . Personal challenge . Action and personal example www.uwcad.it ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE With UWC schools and colleges in 17 countries and national committees and selection contacts in 155 countries, the international scope of the UWC movement is truly global. Each of the 17 colleges is an independent legal entity with its own governance model as appropriate to its country where it is situated. The UWC Schools, Colleges and National Committees form an affiliation based on the common mission and values, and are centrally supported by the UWC International Office and overall movement policies are determined by the UWC International Board. NATIONAL COMMITTEES UWC depends on the dedication and expertise of a network of volunteers to find and select many of its future students. These volunteer groups are called national committees and they operate in 155 countries worldwide. UWC national committees promote UWC to prospective students in their country, encourage and support applications and select students based on merit and potential to represent their country at UWC colleges and schools. Some national committees also run short programmes and other outreach activities and many also fundraise for scholarships. UWC college students are selected in more than 155 countries, through UWC’s unique National Committee system. Selection is based on demonstrated promise and potential. In accordance with the UWC ethos that education should be independent of the student’s socioeconomic means, 70% of students in their IB Diploma years receive either full or partial financial assistance, based on their economic needs. UWC fosters a lifelong commitment to social responsibility and, to date, it has inspired a worldwide network of more than 60,000 alumni, who believe it is possible to take action and make a difference locally, nationally and internationally. www.uwcad.it SCHOLARSHIPS Thanks to the ongoing generous support of the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Committees and many public and private donors, including numerous generous individuals, all the students who attend the UWC Adriatic do so regardless of their ability to pay. UWC Adriatic is able to provide around 70% of full scholarships per year and the result is a truly diverse school population both culturally and socio-economically. www.uwcad.it .
