SVSA music news AUGUST 2017 4 A chance encounter Glen Campbell with greatness SVSA Board Member Bob Schmucker posted this anecdote to Facebook on August 8: When I was a young pup in the Air Force, I was stationed at Luke AFB in Glendale AZ at the same time Glen Campbell lived near Phoenix. Glen’s bass player lived in the same apartment complex I did, just two doors down. We hung out and played music in his living room. One day I was just hanging out when in walks Glen Campbell, just as regular as could be. No rhinestones, no superstar celebrity act. Just another guy who dropped in to hang out and pick a few. It’s been tough to see the man go through the last few years. I’m glad that he’s finally at rest. He was one of the good ones.

SVSA music news AUGUST 2017 9 Voice-over Sometimes a hardworking advice relates performing songwriter just to songwriters has to take a break. Just ask SVSA member Aspen Black! George Guidall, who has voiced over 1,300 audio books, says that writers should want to have their books heard as well as read. “It expands the author’s intent, brings it into an immediacy. I am the author when I’m doing it. I’m a literary hermit crab finding a home in someone else’s imagined truth.” He’s a bit disdainful of some of his competition in the audio-book world. “They’re just reading out loud,” he said. “They don’t have an emotional underpinning. There’s a rhythm to speech in terms of what’s implied. If it’s raining in the book, there’s got to be something about the voice that evokes the rain.” Greg Trafidlo, SVSA Treasurer, says, “This can also apply to the delivery our songs to our audiences. When you are telling a story song, it is more effective if you keep in mind the teller’s point of view. When I sing Song for a Fiddler’s Lady, I try to put myself in the teller’s place. (It’s easier now that I’m getting closer to his age!)

Correspondence

From Jerry Gilmore, SVSA member: I wanted to thank you for the write- up in SVSA News Spotlight. Lord knows I sent enough information, but somehow you extracted the most important. One of the many blessings of the SVSA is its involvement in the music/ writing business. Also, it’s growing in size and stature – for that I’m proud … and a bit envious that I’m no longer in the area. But I’m still writing! Wishing you all continued “completion of tunes started,” rewarding live performances, good health, and continued success.
