PANCHAYAT LEVEL STATISTICS 2011 IDUKKI DISTRICT DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS &STATISTCS, KERALA NOVEMBER 2013 Preface A transparent and accountable system of Governance can be met to a large extent with the availability of reliable statistics. Department of Economics & Statistics has taken various steps and make continuous efforts to improve statistical system in the State to meet the increasing needs of diverse users. Panchayat Level Statistics is one of the initiatives in this line. In this publication, the available data at Grama Panchayat level compiled at district and published in every five year interval to enable data for micro level planning. We have already released three publications in this series in 1996, 2001 and 2006 respectively. This Publication ‘Panchayat Level Statistics-2011’ Idukki District is the fourth publication in this series. A team of officers in the Taluk Statistical Offices and District Statistical Office of Idukki District under the supervision of Deputy Director Sri Ajithkumar did a tremendous job for the collection of data needed for this publication. Idukki District came in to existence on 26th January, 1972 vide Notification No.54131/C2/71/RD dated 24.01.1972. The District is divided into two Revenue Divisions, four Taluks and 64 Villages. Revenue Division Devikulam comprising of Devikulam, Udumpanchola and Peerumedu Taluks and Idukki Revenue Division consisting of Thodupuzha Taluk only.45 Villages falls under Devikulam Revenue Division and 19 Villages comes under Thodupuzha Revenue Division. ii. The District is bounded in the North by Mukundapuram Taluk of Thrisure District and Pollachi Taluk and Udumalpet Taluk of Coimbatore District of Tamilnadu State, on the west by Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam and Kunnathunadu Taluks of Ernakulam District and Kanjirappally and Meenachil Taluks of Kottayam District. On the South, it is bounded by Pathanamthitta District and on the East by Kodaikanal and Uthamapalayam Taluk of Madurai District and Silvillipuram Taluk of Ramanathapuram District of Tamilnadu State. The District lies between the North latitudes 90 15’ and 100 2’ and the East longitudes 76037’and 770’25”.Idukki district consists of 5 Sub-micro Region namely (1)Anamalai Forested Hills (2) Marayoor Forested Hills (3) Cardamom Hills (4) Periyar River basin and (5) Thekkedy Forested Hills. iii. Anamalai Forest Hills region is a Semi-Evergreen forest type .The Maximum Height of Anamudi is 2695 mt. which is the highest Peak in South India, lies on Eastern Portion of Kannan Devan Hills Village and the Minimum height is 107 mt. is in Mannamkandam village. Marayoor Forest Hill tract tilts towards the East. The Maximum height of this region 2523 mts. is located in its Southern end and in the Vattavada village and the minimum height 800 mts. lies in its Eastern portion in the Marayoor village. Cardamom Hill region lies as a continuous belt from the North to South on the Eastern side of the district. It slopes towards the West and this fertile tract has a large number of Tea and Cardamom Estates. The maximum height 2185 mts is at its Northern tip in Rajakkad Village of Udumpanchola Taluk and the minimum height 913 mts is at the Southern end in Periyar village of Peerumedu Taluk. Periyar River basin region is the catchment area of the Periyar river and is structurally controlled towards the North–West. This region is having below 1000mts. in height and slopes towards the West. However the maximum height(1194 mts) lies at Udumpannoor village of Thodupuzha Taluk and the minimum height (118 mts at Western part of Pannoorkara , Udumbannoor village of Thodupuzha Taluk. Thekkedy forested Hill region slopes towards the West and the maximum height1811 mts is in the Southern most part of Mlappara Village of Peerumade Taluk and minimum height 101mts is in the Western portion at Peruvanthanam Village of Peerumade Taluk. iv. The Periyar, The Pambar , The Thodupuzhayar and the Thalayar are the important River systems of the district. The Periyar having a length of 244 Km is the second longest river in Kerala.

From the total State Plan, an outlay of Rs 1962.00 Crore has been earmarked for Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP), which is in proportion to the percentage of Scheduled Castes to the total population of the State. As we all know, the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) is aimed at (a) Economic development through beneficiary oriented programs for raising their income and creating assets; (b) Schemes for infrastructure development through provision of drinking water supply, link roads, house-sites, housing etc.

Vide Order (2) above District Magistrates are directed to assess the ground situation in tleir districts and use the relevent provisions and orders under section 144, CrPC to control the spread of the desease. It was also directed that strict restrictions shall be imposed in the containment zones and in specific areas where the spread of desease is apprehended. Vide Order (1) cited, the Government ordered that the DDMA's shall depute Exclusively one or more, able Gazetted Officers from other departments of the State government (Deparments other than Health, Police, Revenue and LSGD) working in the District as Sectoral Magistrates & Covid Sentinels, in each local body who shall be tasked to reinvigorate monitoring and enforcement of Covid containment activities in their Jurisdiction. In the above circumstances, I, H Dineshan IAS, the District Magistrate and District Collector Idukki, by virtue of the powers conffened on me under the Disaster Management Act 2005, here by appoint and empower the following officers as Sector officers to monitor and enforce ali Covid Containment measures - existing and those introduced from time to time in their areas of jurisdisction specified by DDMA.

Received: June 25, 2018 Accepted: August 11, 2018 ABSTRACT Energy has been a key instrument in the development scenario of mankind. Energy resources are obtained from environmental resources, and used in different economic sectors in carrying out various activities. Production of energy directly depletes the environmental resources, and indirectly pollutes the biosphere. In Kerala, electricity is mainly produced from hydelsources. Sometimeshydroelectric dams cause flash flood and landslides. This paper attempts to analyse the social and environmental consequences of hydroelectric dams in Kerala Keywords: dams, hydroelectricity, environment Introduction Electric power industry has grown, since its origin around hundred years ago, into one of the most important sectors of our economy. It provides infrastructure for economic life, and it is a basic and essential overhead capital for economic development. It would be impossible to plan production and marketing process in the industrial or agricultural sectors without the availability of reliable and flexible energy resources in the form of electricity. Indeed, electricity is a universally accepted yardstick to measure the level of economic development of a country. Higher the level of electricity consumption, higher would be the percapitaGDP. In Kerala, electricity production mainly depends upon hydel resources.One of the peculiar aspects of the State is the network of river system originating from the Western Ghats, although majority of them are short rapid ones with low discharges.
