CSc 227 — Program Design and Development Spring 2014 (McCann) http://www.cs.arizona.edu/classes/cs227/spring14/ Program #6: Word Count Due Date: March 11 th, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. MST Overview: The UNIX operating system (and its variants, of which Linux is one) includes quite a few useful utility programs. One of those is wc, which is short for Word Count. The purpose of wc is to give users an easy way to determine the size of a text file in terms of the number of lines, words, and bytes it contains. (It can do a bit more, but that’s all of the functionality that we are concerned with for this assignment.) Counting lines is done by looking for “end of line” characters (\n (ASCII 10) for UNIX text files, or the pair \r\n (ASCII 13 and 10) for Windows/DOS text files). Counting words is also straight–forward: Any sequence of characters not interrupted by “whitespace” (spaces, tabs, end–of–line characters) is a word. Of course, whitespace characters are characters, and need to be counted as such. A problem with wc is that it generates a very minimal output format. Here’s an example of what wc produces on a Linux system when asked to count the content of a pair of files; we can do better! $ wc prog6a.dat prog6b.dat 2 6 38 prog6a.dat 32 321 1883 prog6b.dat 34 327 1921 total Assignment: Write a Java program (completely documented according to the class documentation guidelines, of course) that counts lines, words, and bytes (characters) of text files. -

What is the difference between an “App” and a “Suite”? “Apps” are single applications running on the device used to collect and store data. In most cases, multiple apps would be utilized to handle various operations. For example, the ‘Item_Quantity’ app is one of the most widely used apps and the most direct means to take a basic inventory count, it produces a data file showing what items are in stock, the relative quantities, and requires minimal input from the mobile worker(s). Other operations will require additional input, for example, if you also need to know the specific location for each item in inventory, the ‘Item_Lot_Quantity’ app would be a better fit. Apps can be used in a variety of ways and provide the LDX10 the flexibility to handle virtually any data collection operation. “Suite” files are simply collections of individual apps. Suite files allow you to easily manage and edit multiple apps from within a single ‘store-house’ file and provide an effortless means for device deployment. -

Liquidsoap: a High-Level Programming Language for Multimedia Streaming David Baelde1, Romain Beauxis2, and Samuel Mimram3 1 University of Minnesota, USA 2 Department of Mathematics, Tulane University, USA 3 CEA LIST – LMeASI, France Abstract. Generating multimedia streams, such as in a netradio, is a task which is complex and difficult to adapt to every users’ needs. We introduce a novel approach in order to achieve it, based on a dedi- cated high-level functional programming language, called Liquidsoap, for generating, manipulating and broadcasting multimedia streams. Unlike traditional approaches, which are based on configuration files or static graphical interfaces, it also allows the user to build complex and highly customized systems. This language is based on a model for streams and contains operators and constructions, which make it adapted to the gen- eration of streams. The interpreter of the language also ensures many properties concerning the good execution of the stream generation. The widespread adoption of broadband internet in the last decades has changed a lot our way of producing and consuming information. Classical devices from the analog era, such as television or radio broadcasting devices have been rapidly adapted to the digital world in order to benefit from the new technologies available. While analog devices were mostly based on hardware implementations, their digital counterparts often consist in software implementations, which po- tentially offers much more flexibility and modularity in their design. However, there is still much progress to be done to unleash this potential in many ar- eas where software implementations remain pretty much as hard-wired as their digital counterparts. -

CHAPTER Basic Structures: Sets, Functions, 2 Sequences, and Sums 2.1 Sets uch of discrete mathematics is devoted to the study of discrete structures, used to represent discrete objects. Many important discrete structures are built using sets, which 2.2 Set Operations M are collections of objects. Among the discrete structures built from sets are combinations, 2.3 Functions unordered collections of objects used extensively in counting; relations, sets of ordered pairs that represent relationships between objects; graphs, sets of vertices and edges that connect 2.4 Sequences and vertices; and finite state machines, used to model computing machines. These are some of the Summations topics we will study in later chapters. The concept of a function is extremely important in discrete mathematics. A function assigns to each element of a set exactly one element of a set. Functions play important roles throughout discrete mathematics. They are used to represent the computational complexity of algorithms, to study the size of sets, to count objects, and in a myriad of other ways. Useful structures such as sequences and strings are special types of functions. In this chapter, we will introduce the notion of a sequence, which represents ordered lists of elements. We will introduce some important types of sequences, and we will address the problem of identifying a pattern for the terms of a sequence from its first few terms. Using the notion of a sequence, we will define what it means for a set to be countable, namely, that we can list all the elements of the set in a sequence. -

Introduction
Introduction A need shared by many applications is the ability to authenticate a user and then bind a set of permissions to the user which indicate what actions the user is permitted to perform (i.e. authorization). A LocalSystem may have implemented it's own authentication and authorization and now wishes to utilize a federated Identity Provider (IdP). Typically the IdP provides an assertion with information describing the authenticated user. The goal is to transform the IdP assertion into a LocalSystem token. In it's simplest terms this is a data transformation which might include: • renaming of data items • conversion to a different format • deletion of data • addition of data • reorganization of data There are many ways such a transformation could be implemented: 1. Custom site specific code 2. Scripts written in a scripting language 3. XSLT 4. Rule based transforms We also desire these goals for the transformation. 1. Site administrator configurable 2. Secure 3. Simple 4. Extensible 5. Efficient Implementation choice 1, custom written code fails goals 1, 3 and 4, an admin cannot adapt it, it's not simple, and it's likely to be difficult to extend. Implementation choice 2, script based transformations have a lot of appeal. Because one has at their disposal the full power of an actual programming language there are virtually no limitations. If it's a popular scripting language an administrator is likely to already know the language and might be able to program a new transformation or at a minimum tweak an existing script. Forking out to a script interpreter is inefficient, but it's now possible to embed script interpreters in the existing application. -

Student Batch File Layout – Version 1.0 This document shall set forth the layout of the Student Batch File that will be used for feeding student records into the Uniq-ID System for id assignment and/or student information updates. The Student Batch File should contain three different types of records. The three types of records are: (1) Header record (2) Detail Record (3) Trailer Record. The Header and Trailer record should be delimited by a single tab or space character. The Detail records can be either tab or comma delimited and the Header record should identify which type is being used (in the delimiter field). All records should be delimited from each by the source operating system’s end of line character or character sequence. In the Uniq-ID System, errors in the Student Batch File will be handled in two different ways. One way is to flag the particular record and allow the user to repair it in the “Fix Errors” stage. The other way is to reject the entire Student Batch File and require that the user resubmit it. Rejection of a Student Batch File will occur if: 1. One or more record types are missing. 2. One or more fields have been omitted from a record. 3. The “Number of Records” field in the trailer record is incorrect. 4. The “Transmission ID” fields in the header and trailer records do not match. 5. The maximum allowable number of detail record errors has been exceeded. 6. The maximum allowable number of records in the entire file has been exceeded. -
