he india internationalCentre is celebrating its Golden Jubilee, having completed five decades of unique service to society. Tas i see it, the Centre is like the triveni, a confluence of three streams. the first is the intellectual, which involves a whole series of lectures, seminars, symposia, conferences and publications, which ofteninclude eminent speakers from around theworld. Some of these are organised by the Centre itself while many organisations use the Centre as an excellent venue for their activities. thus, the Centre plays a significant role in the intellectual life of the nation. the second stream is art and culture. With our tremendously richcultural traditions, theCentreshowcases some of our most prominent artistes and musicians – vocal as well as instrumental, hindustani as well as Carnatic. it also has two excellent art galleries where there is a constant series of exhibitions, particularly by lesser- known artists. a film club completes the cultural spectrum provided by the india internationalCentre. the third stream, in some ways equally important, are the social activities. the Centre has become a gathering point for members from different segments of society who meet, either for a cup of coffee and biscuits in the lounge or for full meals in the main dining room and the annexelounge. these meetings themselves constitute an important aspect of social life in delhi, and are particularly valued by elderly members after their retirement. in fact, i have met several senior citizens who have told me that if the iiC had not been here, they would no longer have been living in delhi. between them, therefore, the intellectual, cultural andsocial dimensionsof the Centre make it a unique institute, the likes of which i doubt exists anywhere else in the world. this is a tribute to the vision and dynamism of dr. C.d. deshmukh who was the first President and who established the Centre with the blessings of

By Karan Singh dr. S. radhakrishnan, Pandit , John d. rockefeller, iii, and an initial grant from the rockefeller Foundation. he was ably assisted by his wife durgabai deshmukh, an outstanding social worker in her own right. Subsequently, the Centre has had a whole galaxy of trusteesandPresidents representing some of the finest minds in india. in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee, this issue of the IIC Quarterly brings together C.d. deshmukh memorial lectures published from 1984 to 2012. Collectively, they represent an extraordinarilywide and rich spectrum of thought and ideas. i am sure that this double issue of the Quarterly, like many of our previous ones, will become a collector’s item. as Chairman of the editorial board, i have great pleasure in presenting this collection, not only to members, but also to the wider reading public in india and abroad. .
