NEW ENGLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE 99 NORTH END BLVD. SALISBURY, MA 01952 Phone and Fax: (978) 465-3046 Email: [email protected] HISTORY OF THE NEW ENGLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE 1994 The NEFL was founded in 1994 by League President and Director of Marketing, Tom Torrisi, Chairman Matt Brien, Commissioner Bob Oreal, Vice-President and Treasurer John Motta and Secretary Christine Torrisi. In its inaugural season, the league consisted of only four teams, the Lawrence Lightning, the Greater Lawrence Grizzlies, the Rockingham Reapers and the Haverhill Rage. All the games were played on one practice field and each team had only between 22 - 25 players on their roster. The first year, however, was a success because the league was built on a solid foundation. Each team had sponsorship from local area businesses and the league had adopted a stringent set of rules, regulations and bylaws that kept everything on and off the field highly organized. All game officials were certified Eastern Massachusetts high school officials and all rules were strictly enforced right down to the uniform rule. It was these things that gave the NEFL credibility and allowed for media coverage by local newspapers. The Lawrence Lightning became the league’s first champions by defeating the Haverhill Rage. 1995 In 1995, the NEFL expanded by two teams, the Bay State Bulldogs, another team representing the Greater Lawrence area and the Boston Bandits from Greater Boston. The league now had its first team from outside of the Merrimack Valley. The Lawrence Lightning moved to Methuen to become the Essex County Sharks, the Rockingham Reapers changed their name to the Cougars, and the Haverhill Rage relocated to Hampton, New Hampshire to become the Seacoast Rage.

  • Tuszka, Derrek
North Dakota State defensive end Derrek Tuszka selected by Denver Broncos in seventh round with team’s final pick of NFL draft By Kyle Newman The Denver Post April 25, 2020 With the penultimate pick of the 2020 NFL draft, the Broncos selected Derrek Tuszka in the seventh round at No. 254 overall. The last of the Broncos’ 10 picks this year gave them added depth at defensive end, where Tuszka is projected as a reserve. Tuszka was a three-year starter at North Dakota State, and the Warner, S.D., native capped his college career by being named first-team All-American and the Missouri Valley Football Conference defensive player of the year in 2019. He played 15 games each of the past three seasons. “I think the (East-West Shrine Bowl) had a huge role in me being drafted,” Tuszka said. “It showed that I could compete at a higher level, and it showed how valuable I can be on special teams. Between that, and a perfect season and then having a great combine, it all helped to get to this point.” At 6-foot-5, 246 pounds, Tuszka had 73 tackles and 29.5 sacks in his college career. He’s the second defensive lineman drafted by the Broncos this year, after Arkansas’ McTelvin Agim was taken in the third round at No. 95 overall. Tuszka trained with Broncos strength and conditioning coach Loren Landow for the NFL combine, and said he “fell in love with Denver” during that time. He was going to be getting multiple free agent offers before the Broncos, with whom he was having conversations, drafted him at the last minute.

The time has sped by to quickly as I clearly remember playing on the 1st Avery Point Championship Team in 1973, winning the Connecticut Small College Conference Championship under Coach George Greer. Defeating Stamford UCONN to clinch the championship with teammates like Pat Kelly, Jeff Kirsch, Herb Gardner, Jerry Stergio, Jay Macko and Mike Wilkinson to name a few. Playing a modest 10 game schedule that fall of 1973 started a streak of 15 consecutive CSCC Championships. When George Greer left to coach Davidson College in 1982, I left UCONN as their baseball graduate assistant to replace Coach Greer as the Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach and ultimately joining the NJCAA in 1985. This has led to 14 NJCAA New England Championships, 7 East District Championships and 7 World Series appearances.
