Arndt has been credited with reviving medieval mysticism, as being a subversive innovator within the Lutheran church, and as being the father of Pietism. All of this confusion seems to come from the variegated nature of his work. Arndt was willing and able to borrow from a variety of traditions as he sought to revive the church of the Reformation on the eve of the Thirty Years’ War. This work is an investigation into the private world of Arndt through his correspondence as he wrote to individuals with varying theological temperaments. In a sense this thesis follows the pioneering work of Friedrich Arndt, who attempted in 1838 to investigate Arndt’s self-understanding on the basis of his correspondence; his work, however, was severely limited by the fact that only ten letters were known at the time. The Verzeichnis der gedruckten Briefe deutscher Autoren des 17. Jahrhunderts published in 2002 listed twenty-three known letters of Arndt. For my research and using the footnotes and appendices of secondary literature on Arndt and with help from the Forschungsbibliothek in Gotha, I have collected fifty-two letters written by Arndt. This work is the first to treat the letters exhaustively and proposes to present a fuller biographical picture of Arndt and to explore his self-understanding as a prophet of spiritual renewal in the Lutheran church. He had been an ordained Lutheran pastor for thirty-nine years and was sixty-six years old. Fifty-two of those years were unremarkable; in the last fourteen years of his life, however, he had laid the groundwork for becoming the most significant devotional author of the seventeenth century. Copies of his Vier Bücher von Wahren Christentum (True Christianity) were ubiquitous in the following centuries, whether in the homes of pious Christians or in the Universities. For the next three hundred and fifty years his image and his famous book were critiqued, extolled, and, at times, forgotten. Controversy surrounding Arndt did not die with him in 1621, as books were being written about True Christianity at a furious pace. He was regarded as either the most significant Reformer since Luther, or an uneducated and dangerous element within the Lutheran church. Based on the sudden drop off of works regarding Arndt in the 1630s it appeared that his place, and his role in the church would remain unresolved. While the occasional biography or analysis of his work appeared in the ensuing centuries, there has been in the last thirty years a resurgence in Arndt research. At the 1988 Symposion des Vereins für Reformationsgeschichte a session was held in which two papers were presented concerning the place of Arndt in the Lutheran church. The lack of any consensus about Arndt’s place in post-Reformation Lutheranism was evident in the opposing views of the Reformer offered by Hans Schneider and Wolfgang Sommer, to which we will return. This dissertation explores the complexity of Johann Arndt as a churchman and writer through an examination of his correspondence. The work is based upon fifty-two surviving letters, which have been brought together here for the first time. Research in various German libraries has enabled me to locate letters that were largely unused by previous scholars. 1 Although this collection of Arndt’s letters pales in comparison to other sixteenth century contemporaries such as Melanchthon, Calvin and Bullinger, it provides access to his voice and a view of his character previously unknown. What emerges most strongly is Arndt’s profound and unshaken belief that he was a prophet of the church to his age. Repeatedly he told his correspondents that the Lutheran church desperately required a renewed spirituality if it was to face what he believed to be a distinct crisis of piety. Arndt however, was anything but one dimensional, and what the letters reveal is that he could speak in different tones. To his various correspondents with whom he communicated he revealed different aspects of himself and his thought. It is important to recognize that Arndt was not a systematic thinker; although he studied theology, as well as medicine, he was primarily a pastor who looked to writing as a means of spreading his message of ‘true’ Christianity. He could be very loose with his language, and he had little regard for what he referred to as ‘scholasticism’ or ‘disputational theology’, which meant the Lutheran theology of the Universities. Much of what has been written and thought about Johann Arndt has been based on his famous True Christianity (1606-1610). While this book was rightly seen as Arndt’s masterpiece, as we shall see, the argument of this thesis is that it only offers a partial view of the man. The letters enable us to see him as he lived, a preacher and writer who was frequently involved in conflict and forced to respond to controversy, in short Johann Arndt needs to be studied in context.

As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity.

By the early seventeenth-century, a widespread dissatisfaction can be discerned among many awakened Protestants at the suppression of the monastic life and a new interest in reintroducing ascetic practices like celibacy, poverty, and solitary withdrawal to Protestant devotion. The introduction and chapter one explain how the absence of monasticism as an institutionally sanctioned means to express intensified holiness posed a problem to many Protestants. Large numbers of dissenters fled the mainstream Protestant religions—along with what they viewed as an increasingly materialistic, urbanized world—to seek new ways to experience God through lives of seclusion and ascetic self-deprival. In the following chapters, I show how this ascetic impulse drove the formation of new religious communities, transatlantic migration, and gave birth to new attitudes and practices toward sexuality and gender among Protestants. The study consists of four case studies, each examining a different non-conformist community that experimented with ascetic ritual and monasticism.

    MAJT 28 (2017): 67-76 BENEFITTING FROM LUTHER’S SMALL CATECHISM … AS A CALVINIST by Daniel R. Hyde1 MARTIN LUTHER (1483–1546) was a hero. His contemporaries depicted him as everything from the angel of Revelation 14, an apostle, Daniel redivivus, Ezekiel’s good shepherd, one of three Mary’s at the tomb of a resurrected Christendom, prophets like Elijah, Enoch, Isaiah, and Jeremiah, and even Hercules Germanicus complete with lion pelt clothing and a club beating medieval theologians to death. 2 When Heinrich Bullinger (1504–1575) rejected the claim that Luther was an apostle, this led many of Luther’s followers to respond with lengthy refutations in sermons and writings that he in fact was an apostle.3 Perhaps this is to be expected of Luther’s fellow “Lutherans” (anachronistically speaking). What is not so expected is how Protestants of the “Reformed” or “Calvinist” kind (again, another anachronism) spoke of him in heroic terms. As early as 1520, Ulrich Zwingli (1484–1531) called Luther a contemporary Elijah.4 As well, after Luther died, the tendency for the Reformed was to focus their criticism on Luther’s so-called followers while leaving “the Big Man” alone. An example of this occurred one year after the Book of Concord was published (1580), when Christopher Grandmundt published a refutation of Lutheran “ubiquitist” theologians such as Jakob Andreae (1528–1590). Grandmundt said Andreae took extreme statements Luther uttered in the heat of controversy in order to buttress the Gnesio (“true”) Lutheran position. In contrast, Grandmundt said Luther merely exhibited his weakness in these utterances; it was his followers who were in serious error.

We have not always been so well known as theologians of the life of discipleship. It is quite clear in the contemporary church that the need remains to counter the ide- ology of individualistic free enterprise with a fully Lutheran doctrine of justification, but it is just as clear that an ade- quate theology and ethics of discipleship must be part of the effort. Have we no resources in our Lutheran tradition for such a theology? In teaching the history of the doctrines of justification and sanctification to seminary students, I have often been attracted to Johann Arndt’s True Christianity.^ As I have read through the text with students, I and they have found much that seems to be helpful.

    21st Conference of the International Lutheran Council Berlin, Germany August 27 – September 2, 2005 The Formula of Concord as a Model for Discourse in the Church Robert Kolb The appellation „Formula of Concord“ has designated the last of the symbolic or confessional writings of the Lutheran church almost from the time of its composition. This document was indeed a formulation aimed at bringing harmony to strife-ridden churches in the search for a proper expression of the faith that Luther had proclaimed and his colleagues and followers had confessed as a liberating message for both church and society fifty years earlier. This document is a formula, a written document that gives not even the slightest hint that it should be conveyed to human ears instead of human eyes. The Augsburg Confession had been written to be read: to the emperor, to the estates of the German nation, to the waiting crowds outside the hall of the diet in Augsburg. The Apology of the Augsburg Confession, it is quite clear from recent research,1 followed the oral form of judicial argument as Melanchthon presented his case for the Lutheran confession to a mythically yet neutral emperor; the Apology was created at the yet not carefully defined border between oral and written cultures. The Large Catechism reads like the sermons from which it was composed, and the Small Catechism reminds every reader that it was written to be recited and repeated aloud. The Formula of Concord as a „Binding Summary“ of Christian Teaching In contrast, the „Formula of Concord“ is written for readers, a carefully- crafted formulation for the theologians and educated lay people of German Lutheran churches to ponder and study.
