REGIONAL NATURE RESERVE OF NAZZANO, TEVERE – FARFA LOCAL HISTORY Between 1953 and 1955 ENEL built for the production of electricity, a dam on the Tiber River just downstream of the confluence with the river Farfa. Following the realization of this dam, immediately upstream of the latter, he is lifted up the water level, with the consequent flooding of surrounding lands. He trained as a kind of "lake", which covers about 300 hectares, can accommodate a large number of species of birds during their migration. The ecological importance of the "Lake Nazzano" in 1968 then led to the creation of an "oasis of protection of fauna", established thanks to the agreement between ENEL, the City of Nazzano and Italy WWF. As a result of this protection, the birds still increased to an extent that the area deserves to be inserted in 1977, by Decree of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the list of "Wetlands of International Importance" protected by the "Convention Ramsar ". In 1979, in the old Oasis and some adjacent areas (occupied by woods and fields or pasture), the Region of Lazio - the Law of 4 April 1979 n. 21 - established the "Nature Reserve Tevere- Farfa", the first regional nature reserve in Italy which includes part of the territories of the Municipalities of Nazzano and Torrita Tiberina.Today the reserve, which has become "area of regional interest" as governed by the law of the Lazio Region n. 27 of 1999, also includes a part of the territory of the municipality of Montopoli di Sabina. THE NATURE OF THE PARK The reserve is situated on the border between the provinces of Rome and Rieti, in the territory of the municipalities Nazzano, Torrita Tiberina and Montopoli di Sabina, along the lower reaches of the river Tiber. The maximum elevation is seen in the protected area 202 meters above sea level, corresponding to the hill to the right of Nazzano, while the minimum of 30 meters above sea level is referred to the surface of the lake. Its perimeter is delimited, starting from the north and proceeding clockwise, from Montorso Bridge in the Municipality of Torrita Tiberina, the Rome-Orte railway, from the ENEL dam in Nazzano, from the Provincial Road Tiberina up at Km. 31,000. Hence the crease reserves border to the towns of Nazzano and Torrita Tiberina, following the Tiber loops, closes on Montorso Bridge. The City of Montopoli di Sabina is rather distant from the protected area. The area is spread over seven hundred hectares, half of which are occupied by the bends of the river, from Lake Nazzano and the final stretch of the Farfa stream that flows into the Tiber on the left bank at about 1500 meters from the ENEL dam. PATH OF THE RIVER Difficulty: Easy Difference in height: 0 m Duration: 1 hour Distance: 8.0 km Inside the reserve, in a beautiful setting rich in vegetation, reeds and water birds is possible for the visitor to enjoy the beauty of the place relaxing on the ecological boats of the Reserve, the ' "Heron" and "Kingfisher" of 23 seats each . The trips have a different length depending on the route: it is possible to carry out the itinerary of about an hour in the inner portion to the Park (between the landing of Nazzano and that of Torrita Tiberina), or you can make a longer path reaching the port located below Sant'Oreste, so as to be able to fully appreciate the beautiful landscape of the Tiber valley. The boat trip also allows the visitor to admire, from a different perspective and suggestive, the beauty of the manor houses that rise imposingly on promontories of the surrounding municipalities and the steep slopes of Ripa Bianca where the sedimentary cycle is clearly visible to the subsequent phases of ingression and regression of the sea in the Pliocene. On these reliefs of great geological and archaeological interest it is possible, with careful research, locate fossils of shells of marine molluscs. RIVER MUSEUM The museum includes four sections - natural, archaeological, temporary exhibition hall and function room - and is designed with the aim to raise awareness of the river ecosystem in all its aspects and peculiarities. The equipment includes microscopes, aquariums, dioramas and films and has a strongly didactic cut. As for the archaeological section, is located in the basement and was built with the purchase of some ancient caves below: artifacts and fossils come not only from Nazzano but from all the average valley of the Tiber, with particular reference to the area of Lucus Feroniae which also included Nazzano. ROME - MEZZOCAMMINO AREA Municipalities of Rome Municipality IX Eur The area was so called due to the fact that it was halfway between Rome and the mouth of the Tiber. There was a rest station, for the barges laden with goods, which came from the port of Ostia, heading towards Rome, to the river port of Ripa Grande, or to the port of Ripetta. The boats, using ropes, were pulled by mules that ran along the river banks. The journey took two days and the stop, after the first day of walking, took place in this place and for this reason, took the name of Mezzocammino (transleted in English as Halfway).
